Egyptologist Daniel Jackson is brought to an underground military base where he decodes the symbols on Egyptian cover stones as constellations. That allows an alien device, known as the Stargate, to be opened and a team led by Air Force Colonel Jack' O' Neil and Jackson to travel across the known universe to a distant planet. Arriving on the planet, they find a culture ruled by someone pretending to be the Egyptian sun god Ra. Soon, Ra captures the team and takes control of a nuclear weapon brought to the planet in case of the discovery of hostile aliens. Jackson and O'Neil escape and must fight Ra and his army of warriors to save Earth from being destroyed by Ra. Blending into Egyptian myth and legend, and the covering up of an alien race that once came to this planet that took its inhabitants for slaves, not by means of ships, but the use of teleportation, and the use of the Stargate. The method of traveling to the ends of the universe, instantly, a quantum leap, from one space to another, as simply walking from one room into another, this is the purpose of the Stargate. Now, in the present day, and for eons past, the Stargate has been hidden, forgotten, and buried, as time has progressed and histories have come and gone throughout the ages; the Stargate has once more been unearthed. In the hands of the military, this portal, this unique tool, this mysterious device shall once more regenerate and transport those to wondrous and new worlds, those who now share its secret. Led by Col. Jonathan 'Jack' O'Neil, he, his team and Dr. Daniel Jackson, scientist and Egyptologist, have crossed the boundaries of time and space. These modern-day pilgrims have naively stumbled across the Kingdom of the ancient god Ra. An intelligent, cunning and malevolent aging creature that for centuries has used the bodies of his people, his slaves, his humans, to regenerate himself over and over to receive eternal life. And so in the conflict between Man and the deadly demigod Ra begins, the Stargate is where it began, and with the Stargate it shall end. This is one of the dumbest movies I have ever seen. Too bad too, since visually it was really terrific and the acting wasn't bad either. I am a Kurt Russel fan and I don't think his talents were well used here at all. But two things made this movie almost unwatchable. The main thing was the utterly dopey story. The dopiest movie I have ever seen. I mean SciFi does have some rules, after all, but this story was so dopey, that it interfered with my enjoyment of it. I know what you're thinking, it is a movie after all, but this one went too far. The second thing that bothered me is really a little thing, but it is a pet peeve of mine. You know how when armed men move in on their target, how they always cock their guns? A lot of noise effects from that very threatening click-clack of metal on metal? Not that anyone would ever do that in real life, and it's only a movie, I know, and I can take some cocking of guns at inappropriate moments, if that's what's needed to convey an imminent fire fight. But I have never heard so much cocking of guns in any movie before. I felt embarrassed for the actors. It just went on and on. It even interfered with the dialog. OK, here is this soldier moving in on a target with great stealth until he catches his foe unaware, but still quiet though. Then right before he shoots, he shatters the silence by cocking his gun. I mean, gimme a break. Today is October 27, 2004 and I checked this VHS out from the public library this noon and watched it this eve while actually watching the 7th game of the world series. This movie is crap and Kurt was crappy too. I did appreciate Viveca Lindfors as the only intelligent decision the makers made.

Sadly she died shortly after the film completed.

The movie began to die very early on .... as soon as Viveca Lindfors was dispensed with and when the special effects began (abysmally), all while Kurt was noticeably left without purpose or excitement on screen. Lindfors never returned after her initial role at the start of the film, not even to the middle or the end of this stupid story. Kurt's role was very obvious as a total bore and the writing was just wholly terrible. This stupid plodding going nowhere flick began to look like a joke that wouldn't quit. It stayed a joke on to the very excruciatingly corny ending.

I hope I was not asked to part with but ten cents for the ticket. God was it ever tiresome and wholly boring and totally stupid.

Sorry but that's the way it was........................ to me. And if you had any brains, that's the exact same way it would seem to you too, moron.

best,

Phadellius The arrival of Ra (Jaye Davidson), bearing sci-fi cliches, changes Stargate from a merely hokey movie to one that is truly ridiculous. Generally speaking, the continuity between the shows and films matches the order of their broadcast and original DVD release. In order to maintain the highest degree of continuity in your viewing of the Stargate franchise, follow this guide (don't worry, there are no plot spoilers here):

1) Stargate the Movie. Ah, there's no better place to begin than at the beginning. The television series picks up where the Kurt Russell and James Spader flick leaves off. Watch the 1994 film to be introduced to Jack O'Neill, Daniel Jackson, Share (or Shauri), Skaara and the rest.

2) Stargate SG-1, Seasons One through Seven. This covers the show's run from 1997 to 2004, before its spin-off Stargate Atlantis premiered. Starting with the pilot movie Children of the Gods, the story picks up one year after the original.

3) SG-1 Season Eight & Atlantis Season One. During the 2004-2005 season, Sci-Fi Channel paired the two shows on Friday nights and the writers wrote the timeline accordingly. For the most part, the shows' continuity remained cleanly separated (there are only a few passing references, such as in Prometheus Unbound). If you don't mind going back and forth, be sure to start with SG-1's two-parter New Order and then watch Atlantis's Rising. Then alternate, making sure to watch both parts of the SG-1 season finale Moebius before The Siege.

If you'd rather not alternate between the two series, watch SG-1 first. You can even finish all 10 seasons before starting Atlantis, though there will be the occasional reference to the other show and one big crossover episode, Season Ten's The Pegasus Project.

4) SG-1 Season Nine & Atlantis Season Two. The same goes for the 2005-2006 broadcast season. There are less points of contact in continuity this year, so it's not as big a deal to watch them alternately or to watch SG-1 first.

5) SG-1 Season Ten & Atlantis Season Three. Same for 2006-2007. Stargate SG-1 concluded its television run with Unending (leaving the primary storyline from the final two years unfinished). Again, there weren't a lot of direct points of contact (beside the occasional aside) during this year.

6) Stargate: The Ark of Truth. The SG-1 team's first direct-to-DVD movie wraps up the storyline from the last two years of the show. Pick it up after Unending, no need to finish the third season of Atlantis first.

7) Atlantis Season Four. There's a major cast change with the fourth season of the show, so you'll want to have watched all of SG-1 and The Ark of Truth before continuing on into this season. (The last two years of Stargate Atlantis ran by itself, after SG-1 was cancelled.)

8) Atlantis Season Five's Search and Rescue. The start of the fifth season concludes the Season Four cliffhanger, and ends with another cast change. There's also a line of dialogue which places it immediately before the second SG-1 movie.

9) Stargate: Continuum. Though it is a stand-alone adventure for the team, it is set chronologically just after Search and Rescue. You'll see why. Continuum also wraps up another story (that of a recurring villain) from SG-1's television run.

10) Atlantis Season Five, episodes 2 through 20. After Continuum, pick up with the rest of Atlantis's final season.

11) Stargate Universe Season One. The Director's Cut features approx. 8 minutes of new footage not featured in the Theatrical Version. Basically extended plot scenes were added, making the movie a bit more interesting. It shows two of Ra's petrified soldiers. According to Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin, when the uprising happened on Earth and Ra's forces were defeated there, the people quickly buried the Stargate, so no new soldiers could come to Earth to take back control. Apparently, some of them tried; they were directly 'beamed' into stone. a5c7b9f00b
