Los Angeles and other cities around the world are being bombarded by meteors that seem to be slowing down once they hit the earth's atmosphere. The earth is suddenly being invaded by space aliens that have landed off the shore of LA, and who begin killing everybody along the beach. The military is ordered into action. Marine Staff Sergeant Nantz (Aaron Eckhart), who was about to retire, is reassigned to a new platoon. The platoon, flown by chopper to the forward operating base at Santa Monica Airport, is being led by a new 2nd Lt. Martinez (Ramon Rodriguez). They are sent on a mission to rescue some civilians who are trapped at the police station within alien territory. They only have 3 hours to complete their mission and get out before the Air Force bombs that zone.
A squad of U.S. Marines becomes the last line of defense against a global invasion.
I wasn't hoping for much with Battle Los Angeles. I guess my preconceived notion was that it would be a slightly clichéd war movie with an alien enemy thrown in in place of the usual human antagonists.
Well, to be fair, that's what it was. But I neglected to account for a number of other components that made it practically unwatchable.
To name but a few...
Horribly incompetent direction. Not only is the shaky cam and unnecessary zoom here headache-inducing, it's also painfully obvious and evident. In "Saving Private Ryan", Spielberg utilized the technique thoughtfully to put you right in the middle of the action, but in Battle:LA it's clearly there with zero thought or intention just because "that's how you do it these days". The camera is wobbling around epileptically even in the quietest moments.
The script is abysmal and loaded with ridiculous plot holes (like an alien invasion from space but the army assumes they don't have air support?). It's possibly one of the most embarrassing portrayals of incompetent US marines ever put on film - most of the time they're doing nothing but arguing with each other, punching inanimate objects or running around like headless chickens. The script is populated with shockingly two dimensional characters that pop up seemingly out of nowhere, puke out a few clichéd lines then die in boring and overly-telegraphed ways.
A more annoying musical score than a Michael Bay movie. Even Bay knows to cut the music down a notch here and there. Here the "proud, inspiring" musical score is so overdone that you are deeply grateful for silence when the credits roll.
Worst pacing ever. The movie is an explosion saturated non-stop action scene - which is cool when done well (such as in Black Hawk Down) - but with the level of amateur filmmaking on display here it just becomes tedious and frustrating. When you're checking your watch during a gunfight, you know somethings amiss with the movie.
The bottom line is that Battle: Los Angeles is one of the worst examples of the industry churning out sub par work solely for profits. There's simply zero effort at creating a piece of good entertainment here. Any moments worth watching (which are few and far between) are lifted wholesale from superior movies. The rest is thoughtless filler that wouldn't seem out of place in a SyFy channel movie. Seriously, as I was watching this I thought "I want to watch Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" just to grow some brain cells back... that's how awful it was.
I just saw BATTLE: LOS ANGELES, a Marines vs aliens combat movie that celebrates, in roughly this order, the Marines, American exceptionalism, and the notion that sometimes combat DOES solve things. It's INDEPENDENCE DAY meets BLACK HAWK DOWN without the campy ridiculousness of the former. Those are also the reasons it's getting tepid, even negative, reviews from a majority of critics (okay, I'll give them the tedious shaky camera gimmick that should have disappeared by now). The last thing the blame-America-first ideological pukes want is an American population that believes—seriously—there are military solutions to our problems. They don't want us to embrace that notion, whatever the cost, because they're busy negotiating away whatever national hegemony we have left.
This movie presents a plausible—yes, I said it: plausible—situation where the military might be the ONLY solution, what with the silly scientists sending signals and satellites into space shouting "Here we are! Here we are! Right here—come say hello!" If the recipients of those optimistic messages are not friendlies, we might just get to see this scenario up close and personal some day, and it won't be pretty.
BATTLE: LOS ANGELES follows a platoon of Marines on a search and rescue mission to evacuate whatever civilians are left in an area of Santa Monica, California that is under alien control before it is leveled by an air strike from our forces. Aaron Eckhart is just astonishingly good as the Staff Sergeant Michael Nantz and Michelle Rodriguez and the supporting cast matches him step by step. It is intense, close-quarters combat all the way and hardly gives you a second to catch your breath before it unleashes the next gripping set piece.
This movie has it all—action, heart, emotional conflict and a great acting. It's the best film of the year to date and you may not see a better one all year. Just don't expect INDEPENDENCE DAY because a real alien invasion will be ugly, like this one.
Original, it's not. Exciting, it is. This jacked-up B-movie hybrid of "Black Hawk Down" and "War of the Worlds" is a modest but crafty triumph of tension over good sense and cliche.
