A vacationing woman meets her ideal man, leading to a swift marriage. Back at home, however, their idyllic life is upset when they discover their neighbors could be assassins who have been contracted to kill the couple..
Spencer Aimes is just your average, undercover, government-hired super-assassin accustomed to a life of exotic European locales, flashy sports cars and even flashier women. But when he meets Jen Kornfeldt, a beautiful, fun-loving computer tech recovering from a bad break-up, he finds true love...and happily trades international intrigue for domestic bliss. Three years later, Spencer and Jen are still enjoying a picture-perfect marriage - that is, until the morning after Spencer's 30th birthday. That's when Spencer and Jen learn he's the target of a multi-million dollar hit. Even worse, the hired killers have been stalking the happy couple for years, and could be anyone: friends, neighbors, the grocery store clerk, even that crabby old guy shuffling across the street. Now Spencer and Jen are on the run for their lives. As their suburban paradise turns into a paranoid game of dodge-the-bullet, they must find out who wants Spencer dead and why, all the while trying to save their marriage, manage his in-laws, keep up neighborly appearances ... and just plain survive.
Initially, Killers starts off promising. We meet Jen (played by Katherine Heigl) who is traveling to Nice, France along with her parents (Tom Selleck and Catherine O'Hara) after a break-up with her boyfriend.
Meanwhile, Spencer (Ashton Kutcher) who is also in Nice, France on an assignment to assassinate someone, cross paths with Jen, falls in love, and decides he would rather settle down, and exit his profession. Trouble is, he never told Jen exactly what his true profession was.
We flash forward after they've been married 3 years, and this is where the film begins to falter and never quite recovers.
Jen eventually learns of Spencer's profession, but only after a bounty has been placed on Spencer's head and assassins start coming out of the woodwork.
The leads are greatly miscast. Each looks appealing, but neither really fits the material. It trys unsuccessfully to be a comedy, which might have worked with the existing leads if the script were better. Instead the movie is mostly unintentionally serious, with moments lacking complete logic. There are some scenes where you laugh, but they're few and very far between.
This is from the same director that worked with Katherine Heigl on her last film, the Ugly Truth, which is equally bad, though oddly enough, is slightly better than Killers.
You take the bulging breasts of Katherine Heigl's usual annoying and uncomfortable "nice" character and you combine it with Ashton Kutcher's muscles and you get a classic romantic comedy that people will pay for. However, you must fill the film with something and one perfectly good idea is "what if Ashton was a professional assassin? wouldn't that spice things a little?". Well, yeah, but he has gym muscles, not action hero muscles. His best fight scenes look girlish and Heigl is, frankly, scarier than him at every moment of the film. Tom Selleck plays the uptight dad, but don't go to this film just for him, he has a small and almost insignificant role. The rest of it is just filling. I was expecting a least a few half smiles, but it just didn't happen. And the ending was atrocious.
Bottom line: avoid another money making machine that has no real subject or any decent acting.
It’s so ineffectual and unfocused that after it’s over, you’re not even sure you watched a movie.
