Captain Jack Harkness, the former Time Agent and con man from the 51st century last seen traveling with the Doctor, ventures to early 21st century Cardiff. There, he becomes a member of Torchwood Institute, a renegade criminal investigation group founded by Queen Victoria to battle hostile extraterrestrial and supernatural threats.
The members of the Torchwood Institute, a secret organization founded by the British Crown, fight to protect the Earth from extraterrestrial and supernatural threats.
In spite of many of the comments on this series, I have to say I enjoyed it. Yes, it's a little disjointed to begin with, and the characters are not yet settled, but that's to be expected from the first season.
To those who claim this is less "intelligent" than Doctor Who, I can't believe you've ever looked critically at Doctor Who, especially the first episodes from 1963 - it was also patchy and inconsistent to begin with, with more than a few "what the?!" moments.
This show, like any spin-off, does have certain constraints. Part of the fun was that, if a Doctor Who fan, we know more about Cap'n Jack than his crew. Which is precisely one of the issues explored in the first season - the Torchwood team know there is something strange about Jack, and there's something frankly unbelievable about the things they're forced to believe by the evidence of their own eyes, so it's not surprising that tensions run high. In fact, many of the plot points revolve around the fact that these people are seriously damaged in one way or another, which is why they've ended up in Torchwood.
The team, at the point Gwen comes along, has achieved a certain method of working which Gwen disrupts. They have each come to terms with themselves by, to a large extent, blocking out the world outside. Gwen is an agent of change by always bringing the focus back to people (still fresh enough out of police training to feel she's serving the public, and that it's important to do so). This releases the team to start feeling long-suppressed emotions again - and yes, being suppressed, the team members act like teenagers when forced to deal with them. I don't say it's excusable, and you wouldn't expect 5 out of 5 adults to be screwed up at the same time, but come on, people - this is TV! On TV, people actually DO the things the rest of us are busy trying not to think! As for Jack himself - to find out where he's coming from, you need to see the Doctor Who episodes that both introduce him and explain why he is the way he is. At the end of the series with Christopher Eccleston, Jack is brought back to life (without really knowing what happened) and abandoned by the Doctor at some point in the future. Obviously, he can't tell his 21st century team that he's from the future - or that he's apparently immortal; he trusts the Doctor but probably still feels betrayed at his abandonment; yet his entire outlook on life has been changed by the encounter with the Doctor, turning him from opportunistic conman to crusader.
So here Jack is, remaking Torchwood, still wondering exactly what he is now, possibly imagining that the team members he has chosen are self-reliant enough to get on with it in the way he has, possibly misjudging when to be all-knowing and mysterious and when to show some human fallibility, possibly trying to teach his team to think in 51st rather than 21st century terms. He is alone, partly from design and partly from circumstance, with his own baggage to deal with.
Throw into the mix the alien technology - the reason for Torchwood's existence - with its unknown effects on humans, and you get an unstable group. I think the point of the series is to explore the psychological side of the team itself as well as deal with the alien-of-the-week. This is certainly consistent with the Doctor Who franchise, as well as sf in general.
To those who complained that alien technology provided a quick fix all too often, it would be strange if a group collecting alien technology DIDN'T use it. Since this is a TV series, the technology has to be introduced gradually - this is not Men in Black where you only need to deal with 2 or 3 devices in the whole movie and can tie the package up with a neat little one-liner.
In all, I think it's a fun series with great promise; a second season should see the characters more familiar with us and each other; and there's enough flexibility and charisma there to provide something both slick and fun.
(And by the way, to those who wondered why Gwen couldn't handle a gun - in Britain, most police officers don't carry guns. And Gwen was a PC, not any kind of detective or special officer.)
After finishing season 3 of "doctor who" and seeing the trailer for the upcoming spin-off of an organization that deals in investigating and eliminating alien, and supernatural treats called, "Torchwood" i was happy hoping that the spin-off might just be more adventurous and action-filled as like The doctor's quest...i was half right and half mistaken and at all the while the end result after watching half of the first season was me looking at friend and saying, "The last hope of mankind is in the hands of mentally confused and sexually disturbed heroes." Like i said, "Torchwood" is a dark gritty spin-off of the long running epic of "Doctor who" so in this case you can't walk into this show thinking its going to carry the same feel as that of its counterpart cause you will be sadly disappoint but all the while still feel compelled to watch and hope that this show will get better. Some of the show's saving graces is that two episodes that nearly connects to the Doctor who series like, "Cyberwoman" and even Jack's mention of an organization called, "UNIT" (for those that don't know you might want to check out the VERY original Dr. who i believe the one with tom baker as The doctor). all the while the premise of this show is pretty much what we want...SEX, MORE SEX, and of course violence; but as i was watching half of the first season they emphasized A lot of homosexuality and even the thought of lesbianism...not that its a bad thing to see two woman kiss and all; but DAMN every episode!!?
let's get into the character you have the female cop who never used her gun a day in her life suddenly becomes a liaison for torchwood, here's the kicker she is sleeping with one of the members but stays with her live in boyfriend...all the while there's a possible hint of her attraction to the main leader the hero Jack harkness who was a companion to the doctor in the counterpart but lets not get started with him for there's a lot of questions about his sexuality as well (watch a couple of episodes and you'll see what i mean), you have the technical computer genius Toshiko (who is very sexy to me) wants so badly to be in love at the same time saving the world she sleep with the first woman she sees who's' an alien i mean what gives? and finally you got the also questionable male somewhat doctor owen, who might go both ways but i might be wrong. In the end each character does undermine the leader's decision, goes behind his back, sleep with each other (which has a different question as far as professionalism is concern), and nearly get the rest of the team killed and what does jack do...gives them a slap on the hand and call it a night (ex. the episode Cyberwoman and Greek give gifts). sometimes i just want to say, "These guys nearly got you and your team compromised what the HELL are you thinking!!?"
Reagarless of the stranger than usual story lines and plots, the show's dark edgy approach can somewhat keep the show going but every now and then there are some points that makes no sense along side the confusing heroes. It feels like the X-files but without the very stern group...there are some occasions you just want to slap one of these guys on the head (Or shoot them) cause they are so easily distracted or manipulated in some form; the only person that keeps a cool head is the now immortal Jack and place my bets on him than the rest of the team. Another gripe is the feel of the torchwood team..there should be more of them i mean add a little bit more culture as well as people than just keeping the stereotypes that i feel is placed in there; hey i would like to see an African-American dude that had military background or something or maybe someone from an alternate time-line that was connected to the doctor in some form anything to make this show and Doctor who connect on a level that keeps watchers interested.
But honestly, I think Toshiko is hot even though she's falls along side the rest of the group, laddened, confused, and jumps into bed with the first alien that notice them.
"Torchwood" is an anagram of Doctor Who. When Doctor Who was revived in 2005, fans wanted to know all they could about the episodes before they aired. In order to keep scripts and set photos from being leaked onto the internet, Russel T Davies created the anagram "Torchwood," to appear on the production notes and on sets and locations so that they would be overlooked by people trying to get a scoop on Doctor Who. Later, he decided that it would be a good name for a corporation and worked it into the second series. The Torchwood Institute finally made its appearance in the Doctor Who series 2 finale "Army Of Ghosts"/"Doomsday," though it had been mentioned throughout the second series (and in part 1 of the series 1 finale "Bad Wolf" by Anne Droid) Series 2, episode 2 of the revived Doctor Who (the episode "Tooth and Claw") depicts the founding of the Torchwood Institute by Queen Victoria in 1879, to 'defend against threats beyond imagination'. In Series 2, episode 2 of the revived Doctor Who (the episode "Tooth and Claw"), the Doctor visits the 1879 Scotland and saves Queen Victoria from a vicious alien. Faced with the fact that aliens could attack Earth at any time, the Queen founds the Torchwood Institute for alien research in the house where the attack took place - the Torchwood Estate. Fearing that the Doctor brings these threats with him in his travels, he was made the primary enemy of the Torchwood Institute. Torchwood Three - the primary location of the series - is located in Cardiff, Wales, as there is a rift in time and space running through the city. Aliens and generally nasty creatures are constantly being drawn to and sometimes thrown out of the rift, making its protection an important task for the Torchwood team. There are (or have been) at least four other Torchwood bases. Torchwood One was located at Canary Wharf in central London, but was destroyed in the Battle of Canary Wharf, as depicted in the Doctor Who series 2 finale "Army of Ghosts"/"Doomsday." Torchwood Two is located in Glasgow. Captain Jack Harkness has stated that Torchwood Four is missing (possibly meant to be a reference to Babylon 4's disappearance on the show Babylon 5), but will turn up eventually.
The radio play, "Torchwood: Golden Age" showed that there was also a Torchwood India which was officially shut down on 24th February, 1924. Shortly after the Ninth Doctor (Christopher Eccleston) regenerated into the Tenth (David Tennant), he lost his hand in a battle (depicted in the post-series 1 Christmas special "The Christmas Invasion"). He was able to grow the hand back due to leftover regenerative energy, but the old one was taken by Jack, who used the hand to determine when an iteration of the Doctor that he would know arrived. When the Doctor is around, the hand starts to glow, as demonstrated in in the Torchwood series 1 finale "End of Days". Diane was featured in the Torchwood series 1 episode "Out of Time". She flew her plane - along with two passengers - through a rift in time, from 1953 to 2006. While being taken care of by the Torchwood team, she and Owen started a relationship. In the end she chose to try and fly home again, leaving an emotionally wrecked Owen behind. Diane returned as a ghost in the series 1 finale "End of Days," when she tried to make Owen open up the rift, saying it would reunite them. The character of Jack Harkness is originally introduced and demonstrated to be bisexual (sometimes referred to as omnisexual) he will engage in romance and sexual intercourse with any willing and attractive partner of age whether male or female, human or alien. It has said that it has not being cancelled yet they're still thinking of what to do and Russell T Davies is doing another TV show [new children's TV show] Wizards vs Aliens. When he has time he's going to work on Torchwood, but there most likely be more seasons to come. They finished season 4 on a cliffhanger so there has to be another season. And this is what John Barrowman said: "We've pushed the pause button now because we don't know what's happening. It's beyond my control." So let's be patient.
