Water... Earth... Fire... Air. Long ago, the four nations lived together in harmony. But then, everything changed when the Fire Nation attacked. Only the Avatar, master of all four elements, could stop them. But when the world needed him most, he vanished. A hundred years passed and my brother and I discovered the new Avatar, an airbender named Aang. And although his airbending skills are great, he still has a lot to learn before he's ready to save anyone. But I believe Aang can save the world. In a world where humans can bend the four elements, water, earth, fire, and air, the ruthless Fire Nation has engaged the rest of the world in a war that has lasted one hundred years. The world's only hope is the Avatar, the only one who can master all four elements. When the Avatar returns one hundred years later, a young Airbender named Aang, it's up to him to defeat the Fire Nation, and bring balance to the world. When I first heard of "Avatar: The Last Airbender," I was more than a little skeptic. The fact that it was airing on Nickelodeon was probably the reason I just kind of shook my head. Then about three months ago, on a complete whim, I bought the first two chapters of "Avatar: The Last Airbender" on DVD from Barnes & Noble Booksellers and, boy, was I blown away! This is one of the most humorous, fun, action-packed, and generally all-around entertaining cartoons I've seen in the longest time. It's just a pity that shows like "Avatar: The Last Airbender" are such a rarity these days. I'll be turning 21 on the 12th of next month; 13 years ago around this time at the age of 7, I remember that Nickelodeon had some of the best of children's programming on cable television. Then, 10 years ago, Nick began to slide into idiocy and continues to do so as I write this. Then around 1999, I gave up on Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network completely. My opinion of both channels hasn't changed. But "Avatar: The Last Airbender," what I presume is an attempt to add a little pseudo-Anime'-style animation to its lineup in order to catch stragglers from other cultures (and perhaps Nick-weary adults like myself), is a breath of fresh air for this once-tired soul. While I don't think today's kids may completely understand the overall significance of some of this show's philosophy, subtext and terms (how many 5-year-olds know what an "avatar" is?), they may not have to be versed in Eastern Thought to get everything. "Avatar: The Last Airbender," a fusion of Eastern philosophy, Hinduism and martial arts, is set in a far-off land (dare I say, a Middle-Earth clone?) where four tribes rule the world and the most gifted members of each tribe have mastery over the Four Greek Elements: Air, Earth, Fire, and Water. The mastery of each of these is the term "bending," the ability to manipulate each element and use it for creative or destructive purposes. The Avatar, a sort of Christ-/Buddha-like figure, has mastery over all elements and is the most powerful bender of all. The main plot of the story gets underway when the Fire Nation grows too powerful and sets off on a campaign of world domination. But they first need the Avatar, who has mysteriously disappeared. Prince Zuko, from the Fire Nation, is leading a mission to capture the Avatar and gain re-admittance back to his kingdom. Two Water Tribe teenagers, a brother and sister named Sokka and Katara, respectively, make the discovery of a lifetime when they find that Aang, a 12-year-old Airbender who was frozen in a block of ice and also happens to be the last of his kind, is the new Avatar. But he still has many skills to master in a very short period of time, and the show follows the trio's journey to the North Pole with the mammoth six-legged bison Appa and the lemur Momo. If only more shows on Nickelodeon could follow the promise that "Avatar: The Last Airbender" has. What boggles my mind about this cartoon is its style, which, it really has that is completely original, even though the influence of Japanese Anime' is obviously apparent. We get some fairly funny jokes here and there, way out-there philosophy, and kung-fu-style element-bending battles that are pretty hard to top; it's the single greatest piece of imagination in today's children's programming! But my praise for "Avatar: The Last Airbender" doesn't really restore my faith in this channel (unless they wipe the slate clean and bring back all the original programs from my youthful years), it just reaffirms a hunch that they do have an ounce of competency left when it comes to entertainment.

10/10 The premise for Avatar is a great one, the universe is brilliant, the animation is very good, but that's all. It seems like the creators don't quite know how to handle all the power they've given to the characters. Fighting techniques and technology in action sequences are pretty boring. You can summon fire but you're still using knifes and medieval war machines? Serious lack of imagination there. This sort of top-of-the-head mundane approach to what could otherwise be an epic and innovative narrative, pretty much pervades the whole series on all levels and leaves it unfulfilled. The storytelling is rushed and primitive with no space for nuance and no respect for rhythm. This robs both the characters' depth and the worlds' seductiveness. Dialogues have no pauses, landscapes have no protagonism. This in my view is the biggest flaw of avatar and the one reason why it has no soul. The esoteric side of element bending and Shintoism was another great fountain of inspiration not allowed to gush forth. In the end Avatar is all action, and not very inventive at it either. But don't let me discourage you from watching it. It's still an entertaining an fun show as long as you can bear all its critical flaws and aren't frustrated for its infantile shallowness. In Ba Sing Se, Jet is captured by the Dai Li and is brain-washed to betray the Avatar. Jet overcomes the mind-control after being ordered to attack Aang and his friends and is killed by Long Feng in the "Lake Laogai" episode. Jet actually dies off-screen; his fate has been confirmed by the show's creators. Currently there is one Live Action Film The Last Airbender (2010), written and directed by M. Night Shyamalan . The film was produced at Paramount. The movie was titled "The Last Airbender" to avoid confusion with James Cameron's unrelated film "Avatar." The movie was released in theaters on July 2, 2010. Shooting took place on stages in Philadelphia, as well as locations including Greenland. Series creators Michael DiMartino & Bryan Konietzko served as executive producers. As to casting, the roles of Aang went to karate-trained Texan Noah Ringer; Sokka to Jackson Rathbone; Katara to Nicola Peltz and Dev Patel as Zuko.

Originally, the plan was for three live-action films. The showbiz magazine Variety announced on January 8th, 2007 that filmmaker M. Night Shyamalan had signed a 3-picture deal with Paramount's MTV Films and Nick Movies to write, direct and produce the live-action film adaptation of "Avatar: The Last Airbender."

Despite a lack of popularity with USA cinema-goers, The Last Airbender film continued to be tremendously financially successful around the world and was therefore quite popular. IMDB reports that as of the 23rd of September 2010, the worldwide gross figures for the film was $319,731,881. From a financial standpoint, this figure suggests that all of the costs of making the film were recouped plus an additional 100% profit. The gross in USA cinemas up until the 19th of September 2010 (IMDB) was $131,564,731, meaning that more than 50% of the gross was from outside USA. In sum, the first film was had average success in USA and big success around the world.

In April 2013, rumours were building quickly that M. Night Shyamalan is preparing for the the sequel: The Last Airbender: Book 2 Earth. As of September 2017 there are no information regarding any sequel. No. 70 years after the events of Avatar: The Last Airbender, the spin-off series titled The Legend of Korra reveals that there is at least one new airbender, Tenzin, the son of Aang and Katara. Tenzin is the airbending teacher to Korra, the new Avatar. His 3 children, Aang's grandchildren, are also Airbenders. No, but there will be a follow-up comic-book series and a sequel set decades after the original show. The creators confirmed that at San Diego Comic Con in July, 2007. Other stories will be told in the Avatar world and there is the live-action movie, but the animated series ends with Book 3: Fire. The further adventures of Aang and his friends will be continued in an ongoing comic-book series to be published by Dark Horse Comics.

Nickelodeon has announced that there will be a new series titled [link]tt1695360[/link]. 'The Legend of Korra' takes place 70 years after the events of 'Avatar: The Last Airbender' and follows the adventures of the Avatar after Aang a passionate, rebellious, and fearless teenaged girl from the Southern Water Tribe named Korra. Korra is tutored by Aang's son, Tenzin, in the ways of airbending; so, in a sense, 'The Legend of Korra' will be 'Book 4: Air', because the Avatar is learning airbending. The incomplete line of Avatar toys, produced by Mattel, can be found online and in most major toy stores. Yes all three seasons are availible on DVD, however no blu ray set has been anounced yet Yes. The follow-up series called [link]tt1695360[/link] and takes place 70 years after the events of 'Avatar: The Last Airbender'.
