Mark Corley is a Los Angeles police detective who visits his estranged teenage son, Trent, having landed in jail due to brawling just as an alien invasion begins and the entire population of the city is sucked into various spaceships by the blue light. Oh my god. Random scenes happen without any connection to anything else. Absurdly clumsy plot devices abound. Empty corridors suddenly have things in them. Nobody eats, and there is no food anywhere. There's no wider image to any of the architecture - it's all just a bunch of sets glued together. Repeated hints at it being in Vietnam, despite being shot in obviously Cambodia. And, the piece de resistance, "Jason and the Argonauts" quality animation. Seriously, Wallace and Gromit was more convincing.
Well paced though, and engrossing in a B-movie fashion.
The movie starts out alright... until the blue light is introduced ( Note that I did not watch the previous movie). Shortly after, Trent exclaims to not look at the light, but does so anyways! Anyways, the light is bizarre to me along with the aliens that "overcome the evilness" and turn out friendly. What! Is it not overly coincidental that the main character, Mark, meets two friendly aliens, one in the main ship and then another one on land? In addition, he seems invincible and has extreme parkour skills. With all he has been through, Mark does not look beaten or injured enough. He survives an apocalypse of brain hungry aliens for goodness sake. I am also confused on why the movie tries to make Mark's deceased wife, Rose, relevant. Her being decreased does not significantly contribute to anything but the naming of the alien child. Unlike most of the characters, Sarge is unique and I wished he played a bigger role in the movie. In conclusion, "Beyond Skyline" is full of action, but the plot and characters are not so good.
Tone is a revealing element for this project, which it borrows from the B-movie, apocalyptic seriousness of a later “Transformers” sequel. One of the movie’s biggest surprises is then that it has outtakes, which even include poking fun at how easily the intimidating alien’s costume head can fall off.
