The creme of Jack Webb action series ran 6 seasons from 1972-1979, inspired by CA legislation signed by Gov. Ronald Reagan on July 14, 1970. The new law paved the way for creation of firefighter paramedic programs all over California. This series showcases the Los Angeles model and the emerging specialty of Emergency Hospital Medicine. In Los Angeles, firefighters train to certify as FF-PM, employed through the L.A. County Fire Department. The new Station 51 has one full-size Engine and a smaller Squad which carries state of the art equipment used by the FF-PMs. This includes a mobile radio and portable EKG machine which allows them contact and transmit information to and from the field to ER specialists at hospitals like Rampart General. There are spectacular rescues and more mundane runs; prompt treatment in the field by FF-PMs keeps a large number of patients alive long enough to reach a hospital. At Rampart, teams of skilled professionals provide appropriate medical care to the patients transported by Squad 51 and other FF-PMs. A close friendship evolves between the Squad 51 FF-PMs and the Rampart emergency team. The FF-PM mantra: "take it easy" is born. The crew of Los Angeles County Fire Department Station 51, particularly the paramedic team, and Rampart Hospital respond to emergencies in their operating area. Randolph Mantooth being have Seminole reminded me of my friend, Wayne B Urick, the Buncutter, in 1975 when we met him at USGS in Reston,Va. He was an exact identical to Mantooth, and acted exactly like him. That being said, we all watched the show from 72-79 and when the reruns came out recently on ME TV, my kids who are in their 30's are watching the show and are asking, "why aren't there shows like this on the air now?" Good question! Then we noticed that Mantooth later on was on a soap opera which my wife watched religiously because of him and his great acting skills. Very true that most people did not know the jargon concerning paramedics back in the mid 70's. I know because of my friends in the fire departments in Maryland that would all get together in the evening to watch the show together with their favorite beverages, etc. It's great to see this show back on the air now! First of all, this is not a show for everyone. Even the actors have admitted in interviews that the acting requirement was minimal. I, personally, love every minute of it and watch it all the time. Yet, I understand why it's not everyone's bag. Now, that being said, this show was the spring board for paramedicine in the United States and is widely credited for it's importance in shaping the emergency services we have (and maybe take for granted) today. The rescues were all written from actual rescues at stations across the country or were adapted drills. I also find it interesting to watch, season to season, how procedures and equipment changed so rapidly to accommodate the times. It's a great little piece of history wrapped in silly good fun. I encourage anyone to give it a try, if you don't already know of its awesomeness. a5c7b9f00b
