Loosely based on a true story, Killer Elite pits two of the worlds' most elite operatives - Danny, a ruthless killer-for-hire (Robert De Niro) - against the cunning leader of a secret society of former Special Air Service operatives('Clive Owen'). Covering the globe from Australia to Paris, London and the Middle East, Danny and Hunter are plunged into a highly dangerous game of revenge and deception - where things are not always what they appear to be.
When his mentor is taken captive by a disgraced Arab sheik, a killer-for-hire is forced into action. His mlission: kill three members of Britain's elite Special Air Service responsible for the death of his sons.
The film is based around the premise of an English man--also a professional killer of some kind--hired to MURDER three British Special Air Service veterans in order to save his best, perhaps only friend from an evil oil sheik who will kill the friend unless the assassin carries out a job which his friend and fellow killer refused on moral grounds.
I was appalled by the central theme...the murder of three decorated soldiers, whom the plot poorly tries to bill as war criminals I suppose in order to lessen the dishonor of their killings by the main star.
So we are left with a murderous main "hero" who only due to the fact that he's the star, is able to single handedly, repeatedly defeat men trained to serve in the most elite unit in the world. But the idiocy does not stop there. Somehow the downright villainous Statham is written as morally superior despite his cowardly ambush and slaughter of British soldiers. Clive Owen, former SAS himself (in the film) just can't seem to get the upper hand on Statham, I guess because, in this picture, pathetic villainy is the new "hero" material.
This movie does a great disservice to all soldiers serving and who have served. In fact, the film is not worth another word.
Statham plays Danny, a mercenary who finds himself having to rescue his friend Hunter (DeNiro) who is in the captivity of a Sheikh in Oman, who is willing to release Hunter if Danny kills all the British agents who killed his sons.
Danny accepts and with his team manages to track down those men. But this gets the attention of a secretive group of former and current British agents. Spike (Owen) is their main operative and he is hot on the trail of Danny's team. The British government itself though is telling the secret group to stand down and to reign Spike in, that won't be easy though.
When Danny thinks he's done it turns out there was a mistake in his hitlist and he has one more agent to kill. In the meantime some of his team members are caught, others don't end up well because of the help of amateurs. During the final mission both Danny and Spike realize that they are just pawns of a much bigger game- Oman has oil.
Killer Elite is an exhilarating non-stop action movie, it reminded me of some of those British action series of the 70s/80s, that were serious and no nonsense. In fact it even looks like these series, based on the old cars they are driving. Interestingly it's not easy to tell when the events transpire. But aside from being an excellent action movie, much in vein of the Bourne movies, filled with intrigue, there is the political and economical story that gives this movie another layer of depth that you don't find in most action movies. Not to mention that it's based on real events. And those events are so interesting and timely. We find out the sort of things that Britain was doing years ago, and which the US seems to be following, unfortunately. The movie could be a bit shorter and some of the characters manage to always be at the right place at the right time. Nevertheless, Killer Elite is one of the best story-based action movies in long time.
Best of all, the filmmakers took the time to give these hard men just the right things to say - not catchphrases, just lines that smell of blood and gunpowder every time Statham, Owen or DeNiro utter them.

The book tells the story of four British Army soldiers, including two members of the Special Air Service, who are assassinated by a hit squad known as "The Clinic".
