The ancient wonders of the world have long cursed explorers who've dared to uncover their secrets. But a team of U.S. archaeologists gets more than they bargained for when they discover a lost pyramid unlike any other in the Egyptian desert. As they unlock the horrific secrets buried within, they realize they aren't just trapped; they are being hunted. In times of turbulence and confusion in Egypt, an American team of archaeologists is digging a three-side pyramid in the desert. The engineer Zahir sends his robot to explore the interior while the archaeologists Nora and her father Holden; the video producer Sunni; and the cameraman Fitzie record and analyze the image. However they have to leave the site due to the political instability but out of blue, the expensive robot vanishes inside the pyramid. Amir K convinces Corporal Shadid to give two hours for them to seek out the robot. When they are in the interior, the floor collapses and they fall 30 m down. Soon they learn that the place is a maze full of traps and a creature is hunting them down. Will they succeed to escape? I wasn't expecting much, so I suppose it shouldn't be too impressive that The Pyramid exceeded my expectations. The movie was tense and uncomfortable, though not particularly scary for the most part...that is not to say that it was entirely lacking in scares, but it spent far more time building up tension than actually frightening the audience. This is another of those examples of a situation that would lead to me getting into trouble if I were in the position of the protagonists. The opportunity to explore a previously undiscovered, and only partially unearthed, pyramid without proper preparations is exactly the sort of stupid thing I would choose to do if put on the spot. Hopefully I could avoid getting trapped inside, unlike the individuals we are following in the movie. What they discovered while inside the pyramid was far worse than any of them could have expected...and the priority rapidly shifts from escape to simply surviving. There was an interesting take on Egyptian mythology, for sure...and the creature effects are fantastic for what is essentially a low budget found footage movie (or is that redundant, saying low budget and found footage together?). I enjoyed the reasonably decent story, the all around decent (albeit not terribly well-nuanced) performances, and the concept itself. I don't know that I would ever take the time to watch this movie again, but I certainly think it's worth the time I spent watching it this one time. A found footage film these days does immediately make one worried about the quality (not of the picture of course) of the film in question. Done well it is a fantastic addition to the medium, harking back to the independent and low budget Blair Witch Project which did it originally and so well for the horror genre and Cloverfield with bigger budget monsters. The Pyramid is not good. Archeologists in Egypt discover an ancient 'lost' pyramid in the desert and against all advice go into the catacombs to film and explore the new find. As in all found footage 'shakycam' is our guide for the next hour as the group soon realise they are not alone in underground. The characters are thinly drawn as you would expect for a low budget horror, although apparently this cost over $6 million to make. The father daughter dynamic of the central characters is awful (Hinshaw and O'Hare) doing the best they can. James Buckley as Fitzie the cameraman is just about the best thing in the film, although he does look like he wants to be somewhere else even this early on in his career. Awful CGI just adds to the whole mess. One to avoid.
