When his mentor is taken captive by a disgraced Arab sheik, a killer-for-hire is forced into action. His mlission: kill three members of Britain's elite Special Air Service responsible for the death of his sons. Loosely based on a true story, Killer Elite pits two of the worlds' most elite operatives - Danny, a ruthless killer-for-hire (Robert De Niro) - against the cunning leader of a secret society of former Special Air Service operatives('Clive Owen'). Covering the globe from Australia to Paris, London and the Middle East, Danny and Hunter are plunged into a highly dangerous game of revenge and deception - where things are not always what they appear to be. Expecting your standard Statham Thick-Ear action flick? Well, that's what you get....sort of. The USP is that it is set in 1980 with all that implies in terms of cars and haircuts ( esp Dominic Purcell! ).

Welcome to the movie that "The Professionals" could have been. From the dodgy right-wing worldview to classic UK motors screaming round corners, it's all there. With a Daily Express world view and A Daily Star view of women ( mostly slappers with one exception ) one half expects Cowley to show up.

Of the talent Statham is Statham - there's an attempt to tire-lever in a love angle but it just makes you miss the shooting. Robert De Niro takes yet another pay packet for phoning it in. Clive Owen glowers and postures and looks faintly embarrassed to be in this codswallop.

A Friday night pizza action movie with classic motors, dodgy politics and Jason Statham. Some actors abhor typecasting. Action star Jason Statham appears to be the exception. Since his debut in British helmer Guy Ritchie's cult crime thriller "Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels" in 1992, Statham has emerged as this generation's premier action hero. Virtually every Statham movie has cast the former Olympic Diver as a tough guy with a firearm in his fist. Once he attained leading man status, Statham crossed over to playing good guys. Rarely does he constitute a role model. Indeed, he doesn't stray far from formulaic melodramas, with the exception of "London." In his last two major cinematic releases, "The Expendables" and "The Mechanic," Statham played either a mercenary or an assassin. In freshman director Gary McKendry's rambunctious, above-average actioneer "Killer Elite," no relation to Sam Peckinpah's 1975 shoot'em up "The Killer Elite," Statham plays a hit-man who has seen his share of killing and decides to hang up his hardware. Predictably, our conscience-stricken protagonist finds himself caught between a rock and hard place after the villains abduct his best friend are threaten to ice him unless Statham resorts to violence.

McKendry and first-time scribe Matt Sherring have adapted Ranulph Fiennes's gritty, semi-historical book "The Feather Men," but they have eliminated most of unsavory subject matter. The decisions about what McKendry and Sherring retained for this R-rated actioneer didn't bother Fiennes. Indeed, Fiennes has a supporting role. If you read the Fiennes book, you'll be appalled by the vast difference between the two. The Fiennes book is jam-packed with details galore and sometimes the subject matter is incredibly gruesome. For example, a dastardly drug czar warns one of his own to cease consorting with the wrong people. When the minion refuses to heed his boss's warning, the drug czar dispatches his muscle to attend to him. The drug czar's henchmen nail their cohort's hands to a wall. Afterward, they bore holes into his kneecaps with a power drill. Nobody wields a drill in the film adaptation.

Nevertheless, McKendry and Sherring preserve the basic premise of Fiennes' book, but they discard enough material to make another half-dozen thrillers. Mind you, McKendry and company have forged a gripping, action-packed, no-nonsense bullet ballet with Robert De Niro co-starring as Statham's grizzled mentor. Clive Owen plays a lieutenant in a vigilante organization determined to dispose of Statham. You can guess what happens, but McKendry resolves this derring-do with flair. "Killer Elite" surpasses Statham's lackluster remake of "The Mechanic," but it is neither as noisy nor as hyperbolic as "The Expendables." Instead, despite its plethora of clichés, "Killer Elite" qualifies as a nimble, white-knuckled actioneer with enough surprises and vigorous action that you can overlook the clichés.

"Killer Elite" takes place back in the 1980s so nary a cell phone is in sight. Danny (Jason Statham of "Snatch"), Hunter (Robert De Niro of "Goodfellas"), and Davies (Dominic Purcell of "Straw Dogs") comprise a trio of elite assassins who plan each killing with considerable forethought. They show up in Mexico to kill a man. During the assassination, Danny attacks the sedan that the target is riding in and kills him. As it turns out, the son of the target was riding in the back seat. A stupefied Danny cannot bring himself to shoot the adolescent. Meanwhile, the local constabulary arrives and swaps lead with Danny. Danny is wounded, and Hunter intervenes. While Hunter is blasting away at the opposition and helping Danny, Davies careens into scene in their getaway car and whisks them away. Afterward, Danny decides that he can no longer pull a trigger. He retires to a life of rustic simplicity in faraway Australia with a babe named Anne (Yvonne Strahovksi of "The Plex") who owns a farm. Just when our hero thinks that he has it made in the shade, he receives devastating news about Hunter. Ailing Arab Sheikh Amr bin Issa (Rodney Afif of "Serenades") has taken Hunter hostage and plans to kill him if Danny doesn't kill three former British SAS soldiers who killed his sons. Danny discovers that Hunter was hired for the job but then backed out. After an abortive attempt to rescue Hunter from the Sheikh's henchmen, Danny calls on Davies and lines up another trusty gunsel, Meier (Aden Young of "Sniper") to kill the soldiers.

Nothing is ever elemental in complicated epics like "Killer Elite." Not only does Danny learn that he must obtain a videotaped confession from each ex-SAS soldier who killed the Sheikh's sons, but he also must make the killings appear accidental. Anybody who saw "The Mechanic" will remember that as Arthur Bishop, Statham disguised each of his murders as an accident. Not long after Danny and company embark on their mission, they find out that these retired SAS soldiers are protected by a hush-hush organization dubbed 'the Feather Men.' Spike (Clive Owen of "Sin City") takes his job as conscientiously as Danny. Inevitably, Danny and Spike tangle, and Danny narrowly escapes Spike's wrath. They engage in tooth-and-nail close-quarter combat in a public hospital the first time. Later, Danny has to battle Spike while he is tied to a chair. The same is not true for Danny's conspirators. Just when he believes everything is over and done with, Danny finds himself drawn back into the mayhem because the Sheikh supplied him with a faulty intelligence. The dying Sheikh threatens to kill Anne, and Danny finds a large caliber assault rifle bullet that some stealthy soul has left on Anne's pillow while our hero was away. This scene gives new meaning to the tooth fairy.

"Killer Elite" bristles with assassins who possess few qualms about killing, several suspenseful predicaments, and breathtaking suspense. Happily, about ninety per cent of the action looks believable while technical gadgetry is kept to a minimum. Statham delivers his standard tight-lipped, gimlet-eyed, clenched-jawed performance, while Robert De Niro radiates charisma as Danny's avuncular mentor. Clocking in at 116 minutes, this sizzling thriller doesn't burn itself or its audience out before fadeout. Best of all, the filmmakers took the time to give these hard men just the right things to say - not catchphrases, just lines that smell of blood and gunpowder every time Statham, Owen or DeNiro utter them. Yes, it is based on The Feather Men by British adventurer Sir Ranulph Fiennes. The book tells the story of four British Army soldiers, including two members of the Special Air Service, who are assassinated by a hit squad known as "The Clinic". The murders are carried out over a 17-year period, on the orders of a Dubai sheikh whose son was killed by British forces in Oman during a battle with communist guerrillas. a5c7b9f00b
