Warner Premiere and DC Comics have topped themselves with the Blu-ray / DVD release of "Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, Part 1." After the release of "Batman: Year One," the only logical choice for the Caped Crusader's next solo animated feature was evident. It was time for Frank Miller's other beloved and critically acclaimed graphic novel to be adapted for the screen.
Frank Miller's "Batman: The Dark Knight Returns" not only had an effect on the entire comic book industry, it influenced director Tim Burton to make a serious film adaptation based on the super hero that turned into a multi-billion dollar franchise. Many fans and historians would say it is responsible for the popularity of comic book movies today.
It's been ten years since Batman's last appearance in Gotham City. Bruce Wayne has retired the cape and cowl for a life of tedium and drinking. He meets occasionally with Commissioner Gordon for drinks and to talk about the state of the world. Gordon knows Wayne's secret and is one of his only confidants.
Bruce begins having horrible nightmares about his parents' deaths and witnesses Gotham City digress even further into the depths of depravity at the hands of a new criminal syndicate calling themselves the Mutants. He's driven to suit up once again to take on the homicidal maniacs and show the citizens of Gotham City that they need not live in fear any longer.
"Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, Part 1" is the best animated feature film DC and Warner Premiere have released. There's no other way of putting it. It feels epic and holds a cinematic flare that the other entries in the DC animated super hero movie franchise haven't accomplished. That's not to say they aren't good or worthy of praise. However, this takes the medium to a whole new level.
The animation is top notch and, although it doesn't mimic Frank Millers artwork for the book, there's a certain respect towards the unique style of the illustrations reflected in the film. Batman is larger than life and as bulky as the Hulk, but isn't quite as "abstract" as Miller's interpretation of him in the graphic novel. This is as close to a perfect representation of the book as I can imagine.
My only complaint is that there are a few spots where the plot jumps around a bit and gets a little hard to follow. They jump from one thing to the next so quickly with brief or no explanation. The viewer is left to just keep up and embrace the fast pacing once the movie gets rolling.
Peter Weller does a wonderful job bringing an older and weary Bruce Wayne to life. When he hits the streets for the first time in ten years, you can hear the satisfaction in his voice at re-embracing his long- forgotten mission of ridding the streets of Gotham City of the filth and crime that overtakes it.
"Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, Part 1" will be the animated feature all future entries into the DC franchise will be measured by. They've set the bar high with this one. With a spectacular looking and sounding high-definition movie experience and some satisfying special features, this is a recommended purchase for all super hero fans.
The Dark Knight Returns was great adventure and more going with those original stories or comics.
Animation was great nicely put together 3d and 2d, not really noticed if you weren't modeller.
The basic thing that batman gets old and all .. basics. It was fun to see. Better than other animations seen lately about same genre. Robin was really weirdo in the 2nd one and so it should be I think. I didn't quite understand was he/she girl or what. But it worked.
Joker-part in second one was truly funny, made me laugh out loud. Some weird sequences which I didn't quite get but still these were truly nice surprise after new batman movies (I liked them though) those that didn't quite use the real story.
Batman looked like batman, in older age, it was heroic also and without spoilers the basic writing and all was so wonderfully working.
Great movie, must to say, and the part #2 also.

The budgets for the DC Universe Animated Original Movies only allow for films of about 70 to 75 minutes in length. The graphic novel The Dark Knight Returns is long enough that it couldn't be adapted as a single animated film without seriously compromising the original story. Therefore, the film has been split into two parts to allow for a more faithful adaptation. Fairly faithful. This movie is not as faithful the animated version of Frank Miller's Batman: Year One where the entire movie was a page for page recreation, but it is perhaps the second most faithful adaptation of a graphic novel to movie in the DC Animated series. Some scenes are changed around, some scenes are removed, some characters are visually altered but the story in the movie remains the same as the story in the graphic novel, and there are no sweeping changes to the original story. The biggest omission is that Batman does not have narration in the movie like he does in the graphic novel. In the graphic novel Frank Miller wrote a constant line of narration from the point of view of Batman's thoughts and his war journal. This narration did more than just explain the actions that the reader was seeing and actually revealed some important story information that was not otherwise seen or discussed. The filmmakers decided to leave out this narration and let the visual aspect of the story stand on its own. In the 1980s, the time when Frank Miller wrote The Dark Knight Returns graphic novel, Dick Grayson had already left Batman's side to become the hero Nightwing. He was replaced by an orphan and street hooligan named Jason Todd, whom readers greatly disliked. Eventually DC Comics created a publicity stunt to put Jason Todd's fate in the reader's hands. In a comic book story line called A Death in the Family, the Joker had beaten Jason Todd to near death. DC Comics then created a 1-900 phone number for readers to vote whether Todd lived or died. The votes were for his death and Jason was killed in the next issue. While no actual reference is given to how Jason died in The Dark Knight Returns, it is not unreasonable to assume that the events depicted in A Death in the Family could also have happened in the alternate timeline that The Dark Knight Returns takes place in. An interesting note is that The Dark Knight Returns was published 2 years before the storyline in which Jason Todd was murdered. Eventually a third Robin named Tim Drake would join Batman on his war on crime, but The Dark Knight Returns was written before that character was created and does not take this into account. For another DC animated film that deals with Jason Todd as Robin, Batman: Under the Red Hood (2010) may be of interest. It is not explained where Dick Grayson is during the events of this story. As stated, he was not the Robin that was killed and brought Bruce Wayne to decide on retiring as Batman. In the original graphic novel when Batman is first defeated by the Mutant leader, Batman begins to monologue to himself as if he were speaking to Dick Grayson but does not reveal any information about his fate in this story. However, in Frank Miller's graphic novel sequel to this story Batman: The Dark Knight Strikes Again it is revealed that Dick Grayson went crazy from years of rejection from Batman and became the second Joker. It is set in an alternate version of the 1980s, in a similar manner as the film adaptation of Watchmen (2009). When the story was originally written this was a contemporary time setting and only became an alternate history setting after it took many years to produce as a movie.
