A US Marine sniper is partnered with a SWAT member to take out rebel leaders in the jungles of Panama.
A Panamanian rebel leader is meeting with his financier/drug lord. The U.S. government seeks to "disrupt" the meeting by eliminating them both. Thomas Beckett, an ace sniper stationed in the area, is sent to perform the mission. Since his spotter was killed by a mysterious mercenary sniper, he must be accompanied by Richard Miller, a SWAT trained sniper from the National Security Council who has never had a kill. The two must best the jungle and complete the mission, hindered by numerous enemy patrols, "El-Cirujano", a renegade American working for the enemy, the mysterious sniper, and the rough living in a dangerous jungle.
This is definitely Tom Berenger's signature film, he is perfect for this role and also Billy Zane did his job well in this film.
The best thing about this film is it's simplicity just like predator, the jungle and well chosen music works perfectly with this film adding to the suspense. This is a generally speaking (in a non-sexist way) truly a guy film, I remember watching this with my girlfriend and I am sure she was counting the squares on the carpet after five minutes so be careful who you watch it with. I have watched this film many times and it goes on "the keeps" shelf of my DVD collection, awesome film.
Unfortunately I can't say the same for the sniper films that come after this but they are watchable.
"MSgt Thomas Beckett" (Tom Berenger) is a sniper in the United States Marine Corps who is stationed in Panama to take out rebels in that country. After losing his partner the pentagon sends a civilian named "Richard Miller" (Billy Zane) to assist him in a special operation to eliminate a rebel general doing business with a Columbian drug cartel. Although Richard is a very competent shooter the problem is that he has never actually killed anyone in combat. Likewise, he has never operated in a jungle environment and he doesn't speak Spanish. This leads MSgt Beckett to question whether his new partner will be able to perform everything required of him. To further complicate things, their superiors have come up with instructions on how to proceed to their target which don't take into account several issues and Richard gets upset when MSgt Beckett deviates from those instructions. Further friction is encountered when an enemy sniper begins to track them down as well. Now rather than reveal any more I will just say that this was a pretty good film which I thought depicted the role of a sniper in a jungle environment quite well. Of course, some of the actions scenes weren't necessarily as realistic as they could have been but, as with anything in Hollywood, that goes without saying. Be that as it may, I have rated this movie as slightly above average and recommend it to those who might enjoy a film of this type.
Both versions exhibit a different cutting sequence. Concerning the cutting of various scenes, the R-Rated version is faster and more suspenseful than the UK version. With the exception of the censorship of one scene of violence, only scenes are missing that were slowing the film down and did not add anything important to the story. a5c7b9f00b
