Johnny English is retired in Tibet and in disgrace in MI-7 after a washed up mission in Mozambique. Out of the blue, he is summoned by the MI-7 to stop the Vortex, an agency of skilled assassins that are planning to kill the Chinese premier Xiang Ping. Johnny English is back in action with the support of the rookie Agent Tucker. But he is betrayed by someone that he would never expect.
Rowan Atkinson returns to the role of the accidental secret agent who doesn't know fear or danger in the comedy spy-thriller Johnny English Reborn. In his latest adventure, the most unlikely intelligence officer in Her Majesty's Secret Service must stop a group of international assassins before they eliminate a world leader and cause global chaos. In the years since MI-7's top spy vanished off the grid, he has been honing his unique skills in a remote region of Asia. But when his agency superiors learn of an attempt against the Chinese premier's life, they must hunt down the highly unorthodox agent. Now that the world needs him once again, Johnny English is back in action. With one shot at redemption, he must employ the latest in hi-tech gadgets to unravel a web of conspiracy that runs throughout the KGB, CIA and even MI-7. With mere days until a heads of state conference, one man must use every trick in his playbook to protect us all. For Johnny English, disaster may be an option, but failure never is.
I never liked Atkinson and this movie is just another proof that this man should not be in movie industry. Talking about movie the plot is lame - you just know what will happen in every scene.It is like in all spy movies, looks like directors of such movies have stopped to improvise and make such movies with same formula -"cool" gadgets, expensive cars, beautiful women, some explosions and a lot of locations. I do not think this is funny, it was made to be funny but it is not enough to put some silly same jokes that we all heard million times and put Atkinson who apparently has some serious mental problems.To sum up I advise not to waste time watching this movie and by all costs avoid Atkinson's movies because they are crap
So here we are, nearing the end of the year 2011 and what better way to celebrate than with some nice original British comedy? I say original, as far as working title go for originality it seems their idea pool is beginning to run dry.
'Johnny English: Reborn' is the sequel to a fairly successful original comedy 'Johnny English'. As with the word 'sequel' warning bells should start to ring almost instantly. It is a rare occasion in which a sequel is better than its predecessor. So, the big question, is Reborn superior? Well no, but we can't say that it didn't try. It is clear just how far filmmaking has come in recent years, technology is advancing, special effects continue to get more dazzling (not that there were many in this film), yet scriptwriting seems to be getting forever poorer. So, the plot; Johnny English was dismissed from MI7 after a mission went badly and somebody under his security was assassinated. I'm really wracking my brains to try and think of exactly who it was and where it was
Mozambique I think, but even now those details are starting to trickle away from my brain. Anyway, English has been called back into the force five years on to take on a trio of assassins by the name of 'Vortex', and thus begins an epic tale of betrayal, self-discovery and custard pie to the face comedy.
I don't want to give away any spoilers, though much of the plot is horribly predictable. Should this really matter however? This is Rowan Atkinson after all, the man who invented the comedy icon which is Mr Bean, a comedy idol. I'm ashamed to say that it indeed does matter.
Don't get me wrong, there were true moments of comedy genius in this film (much of it towards the end), but most of it was samey boring and rather repetitive. Worst of all, as I touched on earlier in the review, it was predictable.
One part that does need mention however was when the film didn't seem to be able to decide if it wanted to attempt a horror/thriller approach. It was immediately quashed after the big 'jump' moment, but ironically, I think it could have worked.
Onto the acting; Rowan Atkinson was obviously doing what he does best, and we can't fault him on his performance, just the lack of substance in the film in general. Unfortunately there seemed to be no chemistry between any of the actors whatsoever, and all of them seemed to be trying to keep afloat in the wake left by Atkinson. Daniel Kaluuya did a fair job as Agent tucker, yet still nothing special.
I must note that I was highly disappointed that Natalie Imbruglia did not make a return in this film. She was one of the driving forces that made the original film such a success, and her chemistry with Atkinson worked. Whereas there was an attempt at a romance blossoming in this film, it really didn't seem to take off.
A question which we are all wondering of course is 'Will it become a franchise?' I really don't think so. The original Johnny English worked well as a standalone film, we didn't need anymore, nor any less. All that Reborn has proved is that trying to add something to which nothing can or should be added to, does not work.
This is the point where I am supposed to say to you that 'If you liked the first Johnny English then you'll love Reborn cause it is pretty much more of exactly the same thing'. Sadly not, the lack of characters from the original made it less like a sequel and more like a stab in the dark. It was a brave stab in the dark I'll give them that, however for me, and for many others, it did not work.
In conclusion, there are some genuinely funny moments in the film which had me giggling for a fair amount of time after the film had finished. All of these moments will be lost, none of them are truly memorable. If you like the general slapstick comedy style which is infesting modern society nowadays, you will like Reborn. If you were hoping for something which was born from the original and developed into a finer style for this instalment, you will be sadly disappointed.
Give it a look if you need some quick smiles, otherwise guys, nothing special.
