On New Year's Eve, inside a police station that's about to be closed for good, officer Jake Roenick must cobble together a force made up cops and criminals to save themselves from a mob looking to kill mobster Marion Bishop.
A police sergeant must rally the cops and prisoners together to protect themselves on New Year's Eve, just as corrupt policeman surround the station with the intent of killing all to keep their deception in the ranks.
This film is a remake from the 1976 Cult Classic film directed by John Carpenter (Halloween, The Fog, The Thing-1982). Which it had a simple story. The film is about an old police precinct, division 13. Which it is the last day that precinct would be open for public before it relocated into a new police station. A outraged father murdered one of the most dangerous gangs of L.A., after one of these gang members murdered the girl's father in cold blood. Then the father finds himself alone and sacred, he takes refuge on that police station that is almost practically empty. Then these dangerous gang decides to stage a siege at that police station. Which Police Officers, Civilians and Criminals have no choice to help each other to save themselves.
The Remake has the same setting but instead of Street Gangs, this time is Corrupted Police Officers attacking the nearly abandon police station. The Story of the remake is about a disgrace Detroit Police Officer (Ethan Hawke) is been assign to stay for the night with an sexy secretary (Drea de Matteo) and old veteran officer (Brian Dennehy) for the last night at the police station for New Year's Eve before it shut down for the next day.
A Gangster (Laurence Fishburne) is been caught by the police and sent to prison but since the bug is caught on a bad winter storm. The gangster, three other criminals (John Leguizamo, Ja Rule & Aisha Hands) and two police officers (Dorian Harewood & Kim Coates) decide to stay for the night at the police station. A corrupt police officer (Gabriel Byrne) and his men decide to set a attack at the old precinct to murder the infamous gangster. Because the gangster knows the corrupt officer, that gangster could testify the corrupt officer and his men in court. Also by putting these corrupted officers to jail for life. But these corrupter would do anything to kill the gangster, other criminals and especially the police officers trapped in Precient 13.
This is a fast paced remake of the original. violent 1976 film. The violence in the remake is extremely brutal and it has bad language. But the remake unlike the somewhat slow paced original. This remake has certain flaws like the film takes place in Detroit, Does Detroit really has a forest in the middle of the bad streets of that city ? Sure the film is somehow lacking in conviction. But what helps ease the flaws is the strong performances by the cast-especially by Hawke, Fishburne and Dennehy. The film has a solid script by James DeMonaco, who wrote the underrated cop thriller-The Negotiator. Carpenter is not involved with this remake. Carpenter got involved with the remake of The Fog instead. Which the Fog remake will be released in the fall of 2005.
The remake is directed Jean Francois Richet. Which he is a famous stylish film director from France. Richet shows some style in this film with good camera shots and terrific cinematography by Robert Gantz (Mindhunters). Also the action sequences are good. The remake isn't a Hit at the Box Office (Like the original film). But like the original film, the remake will get a cult following.
DVD has an sharp anamorphic Widescreen (2.35:1) transfer and an strong- Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound (Also in DTS 5.1 Surround Sound). DVD has an amusing commentary track by the director:Richet, Screenwriter:DeManaco and Producer:Jeffery Silver. DVD also has Deleted Scenes with optional commentary by the director and five featurettes. Fans of the Original won't be disappointed with the remake. The remake is certainly worth a look. Watch for the occasional laughable dialogue that seems out of place with this film. This remake is destined to be a cult classic. Just forget logic and enjoy this action-thriller. Super 35. This well-made siege-thriller features plenty of action, excitement and some interesting characters but it's also incredibly tense. The tension is created by the predicament that a small group of staff in a police precinct face when they come under attack from a far more powerful and well-armed group of assailants who are intent on killing them. The fact that the besieged staff can't contact anyone to get any help and are led by a psychologically-damaged station sergeant only makes matters worse. Furthermore, when they have to make some uncomfortable alliances and start to incur casualties, things get even more edgy.
New Year's Eve is a significant time for Detroit's Precinct 13 because it's due to be closed down at midnight and the only staff still on duty are the officer in charge, Sergeant Jake Roenick (Ethan Hawke), veteran cop Jasper O'Shea (Brian Dennehy) and their secretary Iris Ferry (Drea de Matteo). Most of the contents of the building have already been removed and Iris is busy packing the few items that still remain. Jake is an ex-undercover cop who, eight months earlier, was involved in an operation that went wrong and resulted in the deaths of two of his fellow officers. Since that time, he's been consumed with guilt, reliant on painkillers and booze and has been placed under the care of police psychiatrist Alex Sabian (Maria Bello).
Outside, a powerful snowstorm is raging and as the road conditions deteriorate, the guards who are transporting a bus-load of criminals nearby, realise that they won't be able to reach their destination and so divert to Precinct 13, where their prisoners can be locked up for the night. On board are notorious crime boss and cop killer, Marion Bishop (Laurence Fishburne), counterfeit goods dealer, Smiley (Ja Rule), Anna (Aisha Hinds) who claims to be innocent of everything she's been charged with and drug addict Beck (John Leguizamo). All four are duly secured in their cells and then some vehicles and a heavily-armed group of men surround the building and demand that Bishop be released. Jake naturally assumes that these are Bishop's men and so refuses their request. When he discovers that they are, in fact, a group of corrupt cops who have had a long business association with Bishop, it becomes clear that the lives of everyone in the building are in danger and the violent exchanges that follow, prove to be a fight to the death.
With the well-choreographed action taking place in the dark and things becoming increasingly claustrophobic for the besieged group, the movie's atmosphere becomes really threatening. Ethan Hawke does a good job of showing how significantly his character has changed since the events that had such a powerful effect on his psychological state and Laurence Fishburne makes a powerful impression as the ultra-cool Bishop. Drea de Matteo is amusing as the secretary with a reputation for bedding "bad boys" and the rest of the cast also bring something interesting to the portrayals of each of their characters.
For what it is, Assault on Precinct 13 delivers. It's not great art, but, for B-movie fans and those looking for a mid-winter jolt of energy, it's good fun.
