This show has proved itself, there is some humor here and there. I love the choreography of the show. The plots are awesome. Gary Sinese is a damn good actor. I also seen potential in Melina Kanakeredes (if I spelled it correctly) Just as much as the other actors Hill Harper, Carmine Giavinazzo, Eddie Cahill, and Anna Belknap. The show has a darker look, which describes NYC. However, I am somewhat disappointed that the show sometimes film their locations in Los Angeles. But I understand the creativeness of the producers, writers, and directors. It may never be better than CSI Vegas, because it holds its own originality. But it proved to be way better than Miami. The only two show of Miami, was MIA/NYC nonstop (2004) and Felony Flight (2005). CSI NY is on the rise.
With the CSI franchise essentially serving up a sort of fast food for viewers it should be no real problem for the series to keep recreating itself in different cities and then just keep retreading the same ground as the others. After all, each episode pretty much stands on its own and can be watched out of order or as part of the series. So with NY I just assumed that we'd get the usual slick stuff just with a different backdrop and characters. However with NY it feels like a photocopy of a photocopy flat and lacking anything that makes it stand out.
It may be the tone of the series that doesn't match the slick and fresh approach of the CSI franchise, because NY is noticeable dark and sombre a mood that suits the Law & Order series but doesn't really fit with CSI. Even though it still has enough of the slick forensic stuff to please fans, it is noticeable that NY is lacking the spark and fun that the other locations have had at their best. Of course with NY this comes with the territory but from the very start the makers aimed too dark and misfired and don't seem to have been able to fully recover the feel of it.
The cast do well to match the mood of the series and it isn't their fault that the mood doesn't totally match the material. Sinise is a good actor but he makes heavy work of his suffering and loss at every opportunity. True, it is probably realistic to have him keep his emotions inside and be a bit cold but this doesn't help the fact that he isn't an engaging character as a result. His team are OK but again I couldn't shake the feeling that they were not as interesting or as entertaining as their equivalents in the other series.
Overall this may well do enough to satisfy fans but it is hard to shake the feeling that this spin-off is a poor copy of the original that has misjudged the mood and the material.
While often the science and technology portrayed in this series (as well as the other CSI series) is accurate or mirrors sound scientific principle, there have been times when methods have led to results simply not possible in the real world. Also whilst the majority of the techniques and technologies used in the CSI franchise are accurate and true to reality, the writers and crew readily admit that they "time cheat". Tests that take seconds in the show often take days or even weeks in real life. Meanwhile the extreme popularity of the CSI TV franchise was credited for a large surge of applications for courses in forensic science, however many present day applicants are surprised to discover that the CSI's (or Crime Scene Annalists/Crime Scene Technicians, Scientific Investigators ect.) do not perform most of the tasks depicted on the CSI series. E.g. They do not interview suspects, they do not write or execute search warrants, and they do not make arrests. CSI's do not work the way the series portrays them as It would be considered an inappropriate and improbable practice to allow CSI personnel to be involved in detective work as it would compromise the impartiality of scientific evidence and would be impracticably time-consuming. In real life they are directed around the scenes by the detectives and supervisors, not the other way around. Detectives are commissioned police officers (sworn personnel). CSI's are civilian personnel, not sworn and do not have the same arrest powers as police officers. However they are very skilled technicians, and are a component of the police response to crime. American law allows for the 'false deception ploy' where the police can claim to have evidence (fingerprints, DNA, CCTV, witnesses) they do not in order to gain a confession, the idea being that any innocent person would know such evidence could not exist and see through it. This has become increasingly controversial however due to cases such as the Central Park 5 rape case in New York where the suspects were told their co-defendants were saying they were responsible so they accused them in turn only to be exonerated years later. No, they can enter in hot pursuit, to preserve life, to prevent imminent destruction of evidence or to search for a wanted felon.
