In this continuation to the adventure of the demon superhero, an evil elf breaks an ancient pact between humans and creatures, as he declares war against humanity. He is on a mission to release The Golden Army, a deadly group of fighting machines that can destroy the human race. As Hell on Earth is ready to erupt, Hellboy and his crew set out to defeat the evil prince before The Golden Army can destroy humanity's existence. The mythical world starts a rebellion against humanity in order to rule the Earth, so Hellboy and his team must save the world from the rebellious creatures. Hellboy 2 is far superior to the first one in almost every way. In the first one, I didn't like the John Myers character that much. I thought he slowed the movie down, and I'm glad he's not in the second. Of course, he wasn't the only problem with the first, but many things in the second are far better than in the second. One of my favorite things with this film is the creatures that Del Toro created for the movie. The elves, trolls, goblins, fairies and others were just so freakin' awesome. The best thing of the film though was Hellboy himself. Ron Perlman, as in the first film, plays him with perfection. There is plenty of humor in the movie which is refreshing and the action is phenomenal. The supporting characters, Abe Sapien, Liz Sherman, and the newcoming protoplasmic Johann Krauss, are excellent in there roles. Prince Nuada, played by Luke Goss, is probably one of the best characters in the movie. One problem with the movie is how it hardly develops some of the characters, such as Princess Nuala and Prince Nuada. Another is that it sort of felt rushed, even though in some points it didn't. Either way, Hellboy 2: The Golden Army is an excellent action/fantasy film and one of my favorites so far this summer. If only Hollywood filmmakers had even half the imagination that Mexican director Guillermo del Toro possesses. Then perhaps the crop of lacklustre blockbusters that assault us every summer would be able to rise above their empty narratives. Like the brilliant Pan's Labyrinth (2006), Hellboy II: The Golden Army is a tour through del Toro's eye-achingly vast imagination. The sheer delight of watching the myriad creatures and locations flit across the screen is more than enough compensation for what is really nothing more than an average plot.

After a couple of title cards explaining Hellboy's origin, we open on army base on Christmas Eve, 1955. A young Hellboy is put to bed by his surrogate father Professor Bruttonholm (John Hurt) with a bed time story about an ancient battle between humans and mythical creatures. In a stroke of creative brilliance, Hellboy, whose only experience of the world outside the army base is 1950s children's television, imagines the characters in the story as wooden marionettes.

As Bruttonholm's story goes, Balor, king of the Elves, built an army of 70 times 70 indestructible clockwork warriors (the Golden Army of the film's title), which could be controlled by those of royal blood as long as they remained unchallenged. The Golden Army was so merciless in its destruction of the human forces that Balor called for a truce: the humans would keep the cities, and the creatures would keep the forests. Balor took steps to prevent the Golden Army being raised again, but his son, Prince Nuada (Luke Goss), resented his father's peaceful ways and went into self-imposed exile, vowing one day to finish off the humans.

Fast forward to the present. Prince Nuada has declared war on humanity, and begun work on resurrecting the Golden Army. Cue Hellboy (Ron Perlman) and the B.P.R.D. (Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense). As in the first film, it is their job to save the world from otherworldly forces. But there are other problems. Not only does Hellboy have to come to terms with the fact that he may never be fully accepted by those he is trying to help; but he also has to deal with his burgeoning relationship with Liz Sherman (Selma Blair), his on-again, off-again girlfriend of the first film.

What stands out most in Hellboy II is the sheer inventiveness of Guillermo del Toro's designs. It's in the aforementioned prologue, and it's in almost every other scene in the film. There is such a huge attention to detail, that you'll need to see the film several times before you see everything there is on offer.

This is especially evident in the "Troll Market" sequence. Hidden beneath Brooklyn Bridge, the Troll Market like a folklorish Mos Eisley, with every kind of creature you could imagine, and then a load you probably couldn't. It's a sequence made for DVD: you could rewind and watch it again and again and notice something new each time.

But what is most impressive is that a large portion of these peoples and places have actually been built, as opposed to rendered with computers. From your run-of-the-mill trolls and goblins, to fantastically original designs such as the Angel of Death (one of the best creature designs I have seen in any film), they are there, interacting with the other characters, and that's more than impressive in today's CGI-driven cinema.

Special mention must also go to Doug Jones, the actor behind not one, not two, but three of Hellboy II's creatures: Abe Sapien, the Chamberlain (a pale-skinned, rectangular-headed officiator), and the Angel of Death. He was also one of the humanoid insect things in del Toro's Mimic (1997), as well as both the Faun and the Pale Man in Pan's Labyrinth. Jones is surely one of cinema's greatest living performers: he gives his characters each their own personality, despite usually being buried underneath prosthetics.

That the look of Hellboy II is its best aspect is a blessing, because the narrative is nothing to get excited about. It's not bad, by any means; the story moves along nicely, and the characters are likable enough (especially the three main leads: Perlman's Hellboy; Blair's Liz; and Jones' Abe). The movie overall is engaging, though it's more cavalier regarding story and relentless in its action than its predecessor. Tired of the truce forged between greedy humans and his father, the elven King Balor (Roy Dotrice), Prince Nuada (Luke Goss) conspires to release the Golden Army just as soon as he can assemble the three pieces of the magical crown needed to control the Army and obtain the map that leads to the location of the Army. It's up to BPRD (Bureau of Paranormal Research and Defense) "freaks" Hellboy (Ron Perlman), aquatic empath Abe Sapien (Doug Jones), and firestarter Liz Sherman (Selma Blair) to stop him, but Liz has just learned that she is pregnant, Abe has fallen in love with Nuada's twin sister Nuala (Anna Walton), and the new BPRD agent Johann Krauss (John Alexander and James Dodd) is really getting under Hellboy's red skin. Hellboy II: The Golden Army is the sequel to Hellboy (2004) (2004), which was based on the fictional Dark Horse Comics character, Hellboy, created by American comic book writer Mike Mignola. The screenplay was written by Mignola and director Guillermo del Toro. Hellboy (2019) is on the books but no release date has been set.The Golden Army is an army of magically constructed mechanical creatures that was created by goblin blacksmiths for King Balor. That is Johann Krauss. He is a disembodied ectoplasmic spirit with psychic abilities who maintains a tangible form via a containment suit. Without the suit, his spirit would eventually dissipate and he would be lost forever. He was a medium whose body was destroyed due to a freak accident during a seance. No one is really sure exactly what happened. More can be found out here. In a scene that was cut, right after Abe puts in his contacts, he sprays something onto his gills. This spray is supposed to keep the gills moist and help him absorb oxygen out of the air. It is unknown why the scene was cut. In the first movie, Liz stated that after each of her "episodes", she tends to black out anywhere from a few minutes to a few hours. That being the case, it only makes sense for her to also rely on a weapon such as a firearm since the use of her abilities will leave her powerless for some undetermined amount of time. The eponymous character states his preferred exclamation a total of four times in this film. He said it six times in the first movie. He was mostly a man in a costume, and his face was animatronics. A small amount of CGI was used for touch-ups and when his chain-extended hand was used. "Beautiful Freak" by Eels In order to stop the "industrable" Golden Army, Hellboy challenges Prince Nuada's right to lead it. After a long and grueling battle, knowing that he cannot harm Nuada or he will harm Nuala, too, Hellboy succeeds in pinning him to the ground and removing his crown. As Hellboy returns to Liz and Abe, however, Nuada pulls a dagger, intending to stab Hellboy in the back. Suddenly, Nuada begins to bleed from his chest... Nuala has stabbed herself in the heart. Nuada warns Hellboy that he's going to have to make a choice between supporting humanity or supporting the magical ones, then crumbles into dust. Nuala dies in Abe's arms. Liz melts the crown with her fire before Hellboy can become too enthralled with its power, and the Golden Army soldiers power down. As the "freaks" exit the hiding place of the Golden Army, they see Tom Manning (Jeffrey Tambor) looking for them. One by one, they hand in their gear and tell him that they quit. Even Strauss tells Manning to "suck my ectoplasmic Schwanzstucker." In the final scene, as they walk off together, Liz and Hellboy discuss getting a house in the country with a big yard for the baby to play in. With a smirk on her face, Liz holds up two fingers and says, "Babies." No. However, the two-disk Special Editions of the Blu-ray and DVD releases include a little animated feature called the "Zinco Epilogue", which serves to tell us that scientists went to Rasputin's Mausoleum from the first film. Here, Rasputin and Karl Ruprecht Kroenen are eventually shown to return from the dead. "Mein Herz Brennt" by German industrial metal band Rammstein. The music at the start is from Gustavo Santaolalla's score for Babel. Unfortunately, Mr. Beltrami had other commitments and was unable to write the score for this movie. However, Danny Elfman signed on to write the score with the promise that he will stay true to the original music from the first movie. Professor Broom is seen in a flashback at the beginning of the film reading a story to a much younger Hellboy. In the first movie, it was a decision by the studio to have Pierce's voice for Abe Sapien instead of Doug Jones. The reason for this is that they hoped to bank on Pierce's name bringing in more people to the theater. This backfired when he refused to take credit for what he felt was truly Doug Jones' role and as such never promoted the movie, nor did he do any interviews or go to the premiere. Since Universal produced this movie instead of Sony or Revolution, they allowed Jones to do the voice of Abe, and Pierce wasn't asked to return. For the record, Pierce tried to modulate his voice to sound like Jones when he did the looping sessions for the first movie. No one. Guillermo del Toro and Mike Mignola have both stated that when Ron no longer wants to play Hellboy, there will be no more movies. Fortunately, Perlman stated in an interview with Wizard magazine shortly after the film's release that he would never get tired of playing Hellboy. He just requested a couple of years in between films to recuperate, he said that the role exhausts him more than anything he has ever done, but he loves doing the movies. Only time will tell if he truly wants to continue the series. a5c7b9f00b
