Best friends Marie and Alexia decide to spend a quiet weekend at Alexia's parents' secluded farmhouse. But on the night of their arrival, the girls' idyllic getaway turns into an endless night of horror. French college students, Marie and Alex, head to Alex's secluded farmhouse in hopes of studying for their exams without distractions. While settling in, a man breaks into the home and brutally murders Alex's family while Marie tries to hide herself from the killer. When the killer binds and kidnaps Alex, Marie follows him, attempting saving her friend and, along the way, running into some dangerous obstacles. On viewing the stylish and, in most ways, pretty damned good 'High Tension' I couldn't help being overwhelmed by the amount it seems to plagiarise a Dean Koontz novel without attribution. I looked closely, but sadly in vain, for any tip-of-the-lid to Mr Koontz's novel Intensity and the only one I can find is in the title of the film which, with a bit of simple paraphrasing might be a link - High Tension is, in a way, Intensity after all. In any event, the plot for this film is almost completely the same as Koontz's novel. Sure there is a bit of fiddling with the ending but, for the first two thirds, it is almost, chapter-for-chapter,simply a screenplay adaptation of Intensity. I asked myself, did the two French scriptwriters do it first and Koontz copy THEM? Possibly but unlikely in my view given the publication date of the book and the release date of the film. One thing is certain though - someone has copied someone here. When the 'heroine' in the film runs from the house, she hides in the van of the killer. Same in the book. The first place the van stops is a service station where the attendant is killed, Same in both. Here's an excerpt I've borrowed from a review of the book - it could easily be a review of the film - (thanks to Barnes and Noble): "Chyna Shepherd is a twenty-six-year-old woman whose deeply troubled childhood taught her the hard rules of survival. Now rare trust has blossomed for Chyna into friendship with the woman whose family home she is visiting for the weekend: a farm in the Napa Valley surrounded by vineyards and hills, which Chyna can see from the guest-room window where she sits at one o'clock in the morning, fully dressed, unable to sleep. Suspicions she learned in childhood still make her uneasy in unfamiliar houses - even this one, where her closest friend is sound asleep down the hall. And in this case her most disturbing instincts prove reliable. A man has entered the house, a man who lives for one purpose: to satisfy all appetites as they arise, to immerse himself in sensation, to live without fear, remorse, or limits - to live with intensity. His name is Edgler Foreman Vess. On this night, his adventure - murdering everyone in the house - becomes Chyna's long nightmare. Trapped in Vess's deadly orbit, Chyna thinks only of getting out alive." Sound familiar? The French boys added a twist at the end (a rather hackneyed, one at that) and this is supposed to cover the similarities? Come on. Anyway, High Tension is well worth the view. I usually like spending time watching a good horror movie. For some people good means deep, for others it means laughs, for other means blood, for others popcorn entertainment like good sfx, or a mixture of some of that. I think it is important to see the movie from the perspective the director/producer/writer intended. It is easier with some movies and more difficult with others but overall that's what I try to do whenever I watch a movie. I guess the only time I don't respect the efforts of the people involved is when it is more than obvious that the movie was done with the sole purpose of making money.

For what I've read in some interviews, I think Alexandre Aja is a big horror fan and he wants to make good horror movies. So he does this for the love of it and I can respect that.

Haute Tension is a good horror film in that it goes straight to the point: brutality. It doesn't spend much time developing characters or presenting us the world where the events take place. It strikes hard, almost without warning and that's sometimes good in the horror movie realm. It reminded me of the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre where you are obliged to hold on to your chair during the 70+ minutes where the characters spend running uselessly for their lives. TCM is a better film than Haute Tension in that sense but HT has its merits.

The film falls short on what it intended IMO. The way it tells the story leaves you wanting more and a bit disappointed and unable to blow up my mind like I felt it wanted to do. Still it is entertaining but nothing spectacular.

I guess what Aja tried to do was show us something brutal and, in that, he succeeded. This is not a great movie, it won't appeal to everybody. It is an OK movie made by a horror fan for horror fans and that's it. So you've been warned. That outrageous third-act reveal proves to be a major deal-breaker. "Sara 'Perche' Ti Amo" by Ricchi & Poveri. "Runaway Girl" by U. Roy. "New Born" by Muse. "Superstar" by Sonic Youth, which is a cover of "Superstar" by The Carpenters. You can view the film in three ways:

(1) U.S. English Language Dubbed Version - everything is dubbed in English.

(2) U.S. Unrated Version - half of the film is subtitled, and half of the film is dubbed (which is how it was released in theaters).

(3) Original French Language Director's Cut Version - everything is in French.

The film itself is the same no matter which version you choose. The only problem with choosing the Original French Language Director's Cut Version is that the subtitles are not entirely accurate. There were lines added in the U.S. English Dubbed Version, so if you choose to view the film in French, the English subtitles will sometimes display lines that are not being said by anyone. For the US theatrical release, the film was rated R by the MPAA. To achieve this, the film had to be cut heavily. More than one minute of violence is missing in different scenes.

The Korean DVD is censored as well. Nearly 1 minute is missing in this version. Yes--it's loosely based on the novel Intensity by Dean Koontz. A soundtrack album featuring François-Eudes Chanfrault's electronic score was supposed to be released by Thrive Records in the United States, but it was ultimately canceled. On the composer's official Web site (http://personal.computer.free.fr/web/) a link is available to stream "Faustina Mauricio Mercedes Part IV." If you dig deeply enough through the coding, however, about 30 minutes of audio from the score can be downloaded. The 2005 US DVD of High Tension had to be retouched before its release. However, the content that had to be removed from the movie was not of a violent nature, as one might suspect. Instead, the Jack Daniel's logo was removed every time it could be seen. Unfortunately, we do not know why this happened and whether it was someone from Lionsgate or someone from Jack Daniel's who stepped in. a5c7b9f00b
