An officially "dead" cop is trained to become an extraordinary unique assassin in service of the US President.
A cop who answers a call is ambushed. The next day he is buried. But in reality he is in a hospital and his appearance has been altered. He is then told by a man named McCleary that he now belongs to "them". "Them" being CURE an organization whose job is to battle corruption. They give him the new name of Remo Williams. He then meets the head of CURE Harold Smith, who spends most of his time sitting in front of a copmuter and perusing over reports of individuals that have to be dealt with. They then give him to Chiun, a Shinanju master, which is the art of killing someone and making it seem like an accident or natural causes. Chiun's regimen is hard on him. Smith then discovers a man named Grove, who is a defense contractor. It seems that whenever there's a case against him, the key witnesses and investigators disappear. Currently a military investigator is pursuing him about his new project which for some reason, he is tight lipped about. Smith sends McCleary and Remo to help her but Grove discovers them and wanting to know about them decides to stir things up. He sends some people to take Remo out but he outwits them. And when he tells Smith about it, Smith doesn't care who then tells him that unless they have more evidence against Grove they can't do anything and if they are about to be exposed, they have to disappear. And while Smith and McCleary have made arrangements for their demise, Remo is told that Chiun will take him out. So he and McCleary have to get the evidence they need.
I can't believe more people haven't heard about this movie. Remo Williams: The Adventure Begins is no-holds-barred fun all the way through. While the premise is somewhat unbelievable, that also makes it that much funnier. That's right... funnier. This isn't just an action movie - this is one of the funniest movies I've seen, ever. And it's intended to be so. C'mon - the main character is named after a urinal. How can the movie NOT be funny? But the humor is not one-dimensional. While the action between Remo and Chuin is classic physical comedy, the dialog between the two is equally entertaining - if not more so. This movie is full of one-liners, and if you watch with a group of friends, I'd gather you will be repeating a few to each other for weeks afterward. This is everything you'd want in an action comedy. If you liked the feel of True Lies with the snappy dialog and over-the-top action, you'll love Remo Williams: The Adventure Begins.
"Remo Williams" is a bizarre, confused, meandering, low-budget little '80s action outing that is not entirely without its charm. I believe the main draw is intended to be Joel Grey as a serene, soap-opera-loving, Yoda-like Korean sensei. Yes, Korean. Joel Grey. Don't dig too deep here.
He teaches Fred Ward (I loved "Tremors," so I'm not going to bash poor Fred) to kill people with his fingers (which I don't think he actually ever does) and overcome his fear of heights and run across wet cement and dive into sand dunes (these things he DOES do, I can promise you!) and whatever...did I mention all of this somehow helps the US government deal with the problem of corner-cutting defense contractors? And that Captain Janeway is in it as a chatty military do-gooder, with a hinted romantic subplot with Ward that never surfaces? And that something happens with a log on a zipline?
All in all, it's not offensively bad, but you have to wonder how movies like this get dug up and thrown on DVD. (Here's a warning sign: when a DVD release has the "Original Theatrical Trailer!" as the only special feature, it's probably not a must-see.)
