When his vehicle and all his possessions are looted by the eccentric pilot Jerediah and his son Jerediah Jr. The Road Warrior known as Max Rockatansky arrives in the desert town "Bartertown" ruled by the evil Aunt Entity, where people living in the post-apocalyptic Australian outback go to trade for food, water, weapons and supplies. After being forced to fight Master Blaster, a tiny man and his masked muscle-man in "Thunderdome" a gladiator like arena, when being caught up in a power struggle for control for Bartertown. Max is banished into the desert wasteland, where he is rescued by a tribe of children, who thinks Max is a pilot named Captain Walker, who is the chosen one who will take the children to the promised land "Tomorrow Morrow Land", and learns the children are survivors of a plane crash and Captain Walker was their leader. Agreeing to help the children in their search for "Tomorrow Morrow Land", Max and the children set off across the desert wastelands and returns to Bartertown, where Max has score to settle with Aunt Entity. Bartertown is a city on the edge of a desert that has managed to retain some technology if no civilization. Max has his supplies stolen and must seek shelter there in a post apocalyptic world where all machines have begun to break down and barbarians hold what is left. He becomes involved in a power struggle in this third Mad Max film where he must first survive the town, survive the desert and then rescue the innocent children he has discovered. The Mad Max franchise is one of the rare film franchises where each film truly feels like its own animal. The original Mad Max is a classic revenge film with pseudo-Western elements, The Road Warrior is a gritty, low-budget action flick (think The Raid but with cars), and Fury Road is a stunt-driven blockbuster spectacle. Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome, the third film in the series, is definitely the most different of the films, but that isn't to say its bad. It isn't.

In this entry, Max's camel wagon (made out of his crashed V8 Interceptor) is stolen and hocked in Bartertown. Max travels there and meets with Aunty Entity, the leader of town, who promises to resupply him if he helps her take down her enemy, Master Blaster, in a Thunderdome duel (post-apocalyptic WWE with no rules). Max defeats Master Blaster but refuses to kill him, and is exiled, where he meets a tribe of oasis-dwelling children who survived a plane crash. The kids believe Max to be the long-lost pilot returning to take them back to civilization, and he eventually agrees to help them get to the mythical "Tomorrow-morrow Land".

It's a given that Mel Gibson is great as Max. Tina Turner's Aunty Entity is the butt of a lot of jokes, but she really isn't that bad. Most of the other performances are pretty good, barring a few child actors that aren't great. Other givens with the Mad Max franchise include the set design and production design being great, and they are here. Bartertown, the Canyon Oasis, and the Thunderdome itself are all creative and fun to look at. The costume design is also excellent, especially for the Bartertown residents. A Bugs Bunny toy that makes an appearance is a nice Easter egg to subtly remind us of the post-apocalyptic world the films take place in.

An added bonus is how quotable this film is. None of the Mad Max films feature a lot of dialogue, but much like Fury Road, there are plenty of memorable lines to be found among the general silence. "Raggedy man", "no matter where you go, there you are", "two men enter, one man leaves" "bust a deal, face the wheel"... all lines sure to illicit recognition from even casual fans of the series.

The biggest issue with the movie is that it feels like two films in one. George Miller, the director, suffered some personal tragedies partway through and left the project, leaving his friend George Ogilvie to finish it. For the most part, you don't notice that directors changed halfway through, which is a testament to editing, but you can still occasionally see indications of it. Additionally, the story is very disjointed; despite Miller's best efforts to connect them at the end, the first half of the film Bartertown has very little to do with the second half, which is basically Lord of the Flies in Australia. Because both the stories are so engaging and great on their own, it doesn't take away from the film that much, but it is a bit jarring, and ideally this film would be two separate shorter films.

All in all, a well-made but slightly disjointed film that is a lot of fun to watch, but is definitely the weakest of the franchise and doesn't measure up to the excellence of Road Warrior and Fury Road. But again, not to say it's bad. It's like saying winning a million dollars isn't as good as winning a million and a half dollars. I would still recommend this film to anyone who loves action movies. This is a rather dull 3rd installment, it tried to go in a completely new direction, and it simply just did not work!. I am a huge fan of the 1st 2, and found them to be very exciting, however this one is just plain dull, with uninteresting characters, and a dumb story. The setting was certainly cool, and it had one exciting duel at the start, and a great chase scene at the end, however, the children got on my nerves, and Mel Gibson seemed bored at times, plus the ending was kind of lame!. The action is pretty dull, and the character of Max, has sort of changed, he has too much dialog, and i found him very uninteresting, plus, Tina Turner never took advantage of her potential, she had a cool character but didn't do anything with it. The villains are not menacing at all, and the plot isn't that interesting, plus It's sort of a disgrace to the brilliant 1st 2. This is a rather dull 3rd installment, it tried to go in a completely new direction, and it simply just did not work, worth the watch i guess, however it's not really worth it, so don't go out of your way to look for it, stick with the 1st 2. The Direction is mediocre. George Miller/George Ogilvie do a mediocre job here, with some good camera work, however it feels bland, and the pace is terribly inconsistent!. The Acting is decent i guess. Mel Gibson is not his usual amazing self, he seems bored, and sleep walks through the whole thing, there are a couple moments where he seems interested but overall, he just wasn't himself and i don't blame him. Gibson still rules though!!. Tina Turner is sexy, but her character never took advantage of her potential, and was also dull to boot. Bruce Spence is funny as the pilot and remained one of the cooler characters here i liked him lots. Frank Thring and Angelo Rossitto both do okay and did what they had to do adequately. Rest of the cast do okay. Overall worth the watch i guess, but don't unless you have nothing better to do. ** out of 5 Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome is a rip-off of punk style. It pretends to be about life after we destroy the world -- or about the despair and degeneracy in the world as we know it now. In fact, it's mostly one big fashion show. Science-fiction flicks about contrasting good and bad societies have been done for a long time and done better. If you're 14 and angry, dig it. Otherwise, stay far away. [10 July 1985, p.D6] Yes! Out at the Burning Man Festival, there is a camp called Deathguild that builds its own Road Warrior style cars and holds nightly battles in its own Thunderdome! Max regained his humanity by realising that the kids needed his help and were helpless in the twisted world they knew nothing of. In the script (and the novel) is a scene cut from the finished movie where Max falls asleep in Crack in the Earth and wakes up after having dreamt of his wife, son and partner Goose. He starts crying, realising that he has become "the same kind of human animal he had always despised, no better than those who had destroyed the ones he loved". Ultimately left up to the viewer to decide but the sight of him walking over the dunes with the spears suggests he returned to live out his life with the Feral Kids as their protector and guide, finally finding a new family and home after all these years. In his speech to the Feral Kids Max tells them "We're going to stay right here, we're going to live a long time and we're all going to be thankful", noticeabley referring to 'We'. They were the descendants of Captain Walker and the surviving crew and passengers of the passenger jet that Walker piloted. The story they tell about the apocalypse and Walker's crash landing in the desert is one that's been handed down through their time living in the canyon. When Savannah (who herself is pregnant) finds Max, she assumes that he's Captain Walker and that he's returned to lead them out of the desert to civilization. Years prior to Max' arrival, Walker and maybe a few of his crew and some of the passengers probably trekked into the desert to find a way back to civilization. During the battle with Blaster in Thunderdome, Max realizes, after knocking Blaster's helmet off, that the man is mentally handicapped. Remember in the last movie Mad Max 2 (1981) was about Max regaining some of the personal humanity he lost in the first movie when he son and wife were murdered. In this film the writers decided to have a scene where Max is again reminded of his compassionate side -- he refuses to kill Blaster because he feels it's wrong to kill a man who doesn't understand the situation he's gotten into. Master had likely thought that Blaster would easily kill Max in the contest but Max outwitted them both with the whistle. Subsequently, the crowd cheers for Max to be let go and a furious Auntie shouts them all down by claiming that Max had reneged. Many people tend to think of a "gulag" as being a Soviet forced labor camp that existed during the era of communism in the Soviet Union in the 1900s however, the actual term itself refers to the government organzation that oversaw the deportation and housing of political prisoners sent to those camps. More info on gulag can be read here.

In the context of this film and Max' sentencing, Auntie & her people are using the term "gulag" to refer to exile in the desert, hence the Mardi Gras costume head being placed over Max' head while he's tied to a horse that they release into the desert. Auntie was probably banking on the idea that Max would die of thirst and dehydration in the desert & she'd be rid of him. Though his vocation before the apocalypse is never mentioned specifically, we can assume that Master was probably an engineer with expertise in running power-generating facilities like Underworld. He might also have been a civil engineer that planned communities and basic services involved like water, electricity, sanitation, trade services, etc, so he was very valuable, possessing a certain type of brilliance in this arena. Because of his protective partner, Blaster, Auntie was never able to fully exploit him and had grown sick of his arrogance and opportunistic attitude, so she waited until she found someone who could dispose of Blaster: Max. Max, who's very savvy, as we all are aware, also saw the potential in Master to help build a new civilization for Walker's children. Max, who slowly regains his compassion and humanity through the series, probably believed that Master shouldn't be a slave to Auntie in Bartertown, so he decided to free him. No, Bruce Spence plays a different character. Although both are pilots, the Gyro Captain from Mad Max 2 was said to become the leader of the survivor group from that film. Then the narrator of MM2 mentions that when he grew up, he eventually took over the group. So it stands to reason that the Gyro Captain would not be found in Barter Town if he was still leading a group at that time. Also, Max and Jedediah (the character from this film) see each other on more than one occasion and never have a moment where they recognize each other. It's possible she was, however it could be said that because she was trying to run Bartertown, criminally or otherwise, she made this comment to suggest that her, being a leader, and Max being former Law Enforcement make them a great pair. a5c7b9f00b
