Car theft in Long Beach went down 47% when Randall "Memphis" Raines walked away from the life. He gets dragged back into it by assuming the job his brother Kip screwed up for stolen-car broker Raymond Calitri: steal 50 exotic cars and have them on a container ship by 8 AM Friday morning, and he got this news on a Monday. With Calitri threatening to kill him and Kip, and the police GRAB unit breathing down his neck, Memphis reassembles his old crew and attempts to pull off the logistically impossible.
A retired master car thief must come back to the industry and steal fifty cars with his crew in one night to save his brother's life.
Gone in 60 Seconds really impressed me as I am not a big fan of car chases, Nicolas Cage or cheesy lines. But, the film had a lot to like about it, including the gorgeous Angelina Jolie and those beautiful cars, yummy!
Nicolas Cage is great as Memphis, a 'retired' car theif who, one day gets called out to help his brother out with a small problem. It turns out to be more of a problem that Memphis expected, when he finds out he must steal 50 cars in order to save his brothers life!
Gone in 60 Seconds is #125 on My Top 150 Films of all Time.

The plotline is absurd, the villains cardboard cut-outs, the cops unbelievably incompetent and the chase sequences, while thrilling, are pure fantasy. So why see it? Well, there are probably a lot of males out there to whom driving is better than sex, or a substitute for it, and this film ought to give them an orgasm or two. The one female character, played by Angelina Jolie, is a male fantasy - one of the boys who is really a girl, and who is turned on by fast driving. The only notable thing about this piece of exploitative rubbish is Nicolas Cage's cool performance. He is an expert at characters in desperate situations acting against type (eg "Leaving Las Vegas"). Here, he acts sane, stays cool and thinks ahead. A kind of a hero in fact, though the person he is trying to save (his brother) scarcely seems worth it. His methods are a bit dubious also. Christopher Eccleston does quite a nice English villain (perhaps he'll pop up soon in a Bond movie as one), and it's always nice to see Robert Duvall, but he was wasted here. The finale was in a scrap-metal yard, an entirely appropriate venue for a piece of cinematic junk.
This is the kind of movie that ends up playing on the TV set over the bar in a better movie.
