Las Vegas showroom magician Cris Johnson has a secret which torments him: he can see a few minutes into the future. Sick of the examinations he underwent as a child and the interest of the government and medical establishment in his power, he lies low under an assumed name in Vegas, performing cheap tricks and living off small-time gambling "winnings." But when a terrorist group threatens to detonate a nuclear device in Los Angeles, government agent Callie Ferris must use all her wiles to capture Cris and convince him to help her stop the cataclysm. A Las Vegas magician who can see into the future is pursued by FBI agents seeking to use his abilities to prevent a nuclear terrorist attack. Before i even knew who phillip k. dick was, i have apparently enjoyed his stories.

Well, at least i have enjoyed the cinematic interpretations of his stories.

Blade runner, total recall, minority report, a scanner darkly, and paycheck were all done pretty well. this however, well, i get the feeling that something was lost in the porting between book to film.

One of the things that just didn't work well was the chemistry between cage and biel. it wasn't the age factor, it was just them in and of themselves that simply seemed odd. i am concluding that biel is becoming to much of a name so to speak that she just simply cannot play the damsel in distress. she needs to be something. and i think that was what really made this odd for her. she wasn't anybody other then a cute school teacher.

Nick cage was typical nick cage. if you like him you like him, and if you don't you don't.

Julianne moore. maybe it's because of the script, maybe it's because of her, but this woman seemed to have every single forced line in the film. personally i have never liked her as an actress, but in her defense her lines were very forced.

Now while i have never read any think by phillip k. dick, i cannot say for certain that there was something that was lost. however you do get that distinct impression that there was something missing. in all the movies i mentioned above there was some sort of bringing it all together in the end. not necessarily a moral lesson, but something that did make you think in the end. now perhaps that was simply the nature of this particular story, however as it is right now, right this very minute i am inclined to say that there should have been more.

Cinematically speaking it was pretty enjoyable to watch. the best way i can describe it would be watching someone play through a video game when they already know where every baddie and power up is going to be before they even make it onto screen. again however, after a time that is all that this movie seemed to make itself out to be. and that is what left me feeling that there should be more intelligence to it as opposed to more bullets.

But what really did it for me was the end. don't worry i wont tell you what happened, but when the end finally came it left me with the feeling of "what's the point?". now again, book to movie, this really is what made me feel that something was missing. sure perhaps the book did end like this, but i would like to believe that it didn't leave you with the feeling that the past hour was a waste of time.

My wife and i bought this on DVD before we even saw it. was it worth it? eh... my thinking is leaning towards that had i saw it in theatres i wouldn't have bought it. never the less i did buy it and whilst i have somewhat of a large library of movies (700+) i may watch it again, but it probably wont be my first choice of something to do on a rainy day. Is it because producers think we can't think and have to have things spoon-fed to us in syrup? A Dick story is usually engrossing although not always well-built; this movie started off engrossing but rapidly became a patchwork of movie moments and clichés. Finally, the ending (maybe we were supposed to satisfied by then) seemed to fizzle out on itself like a spent firework. Nicholas Cage is so often wooden yet faintly likable that I can watch him without irritation but Jessica Biel - at least the character she was given - was so much the one-dimensional eye-candy token gesture that I kept wishing she'd slip into the past and stay there.

Unfortunately once you weed out the clichés - tough female FBI agent, lissome but polystyrene young female lead who has a scene with a group of children to prove she is really a real person, hero with a past, etc etc you end up with not much of anything except suspension of disbelief which is only going to take you so far - usually to the closing credits, and I cant even really remember what it all ended up being about...

Watch it so you can say you saw it. Directed by Lee Tamahori with his customary flash and glitter, Next lives from one brilliantly executed chase sequence to the next, which is more than enough reason to stay the course. The Golden Man a lot but the 2 main differences is that the book is set in a post-Apocalyptic america and the enemies are mutants not terrorists a5c7b9f00b
