Over the years, the FBI has largely been able to dismantle La Cosa Nostra, better known as the Mafia. One of the only remaining high profile Mafia bosses is Primo Sparazza. The FBI is working on getting a peripheral insider, Las Vegas headliner Buddy "Aces" Israel - so nicknamed because he largely performs card tricks in his magic act - to provide evidence against Sparazza in turn for witness protection. In conducting surveillance on Sparazza, FBI agents Richard Messner and Donald Carruthers overhear that Sparazza has taken a $1 million contract out on Aces, the person given the assignment an unknown Swede whose task also includes providing a piece of Aces' heart. Sparazza, who is in ill health, probably wants Aces dead as one last act of vengeance for what he may be doing. With $1 million on the line, the FBI know that other assassins, known and unknown to them, will also be trying to get to Aces first. However, Aces, who jumped bail, is on the lam hiding out in the penthouse suite of a Tahoe hotel, and is thus also being pursued by some bail bondsmen. With Aces having his weakness - women - it is not difficult for all of these players to track him down. The question becomes who will get to Aces first, and if that person's end goal is to kill him or take him alive. Some revelations may change the color of the proceedings.
When a Las Vegas performer-turned-snitch named Buddy Israel decides to turn state's evidence and testify against the mob, it seems that a whole lot of people would like to make sure he's no longer breathing.
Narc,Joe Carnahan's second movie,is a spectacular film.On that great film,Carnahan took the clichés and he gave them new life with intelligent human drama and with a frenetic style.Smokin' aces,Carnahan's new film,is a step behind Narc.Smokin' aces follows the example of recent action films without dramatic excess(like Crank or the series of The transporter)and with a frenetic style with a lot of eccentric characters destined to crush because of the script.The result is very fun and with a lot of energy but the film is not too satisfactory.The movie's first hour shows us the shallow characters but the movie affirms that nobody has the secure life...anything can happen.The second hour shows us violent scenes with a very irregular style:some of them are serious and some of them are so ridiculous that make laugh.There are some forced elements but I have to admit that Carnahan made a great work as a director in this movie which is always near to loose the control.The action scenes have a lot of impact.This film has so many characters that a lot of them are very shallow.Jeremy Piven is great on his role.Ryan Reynolds has also a good performance as Agent Richard Messner.The singer Alicia Keys really surprised me with her performance as a killer.The interaction her character has with her ''partner'' Sharice(Taraji P.Henson)is real,honest and credible.If this film would have the same impact Narc had,it would have been a masterpiece.But I have to say Smokin' aces kept me very interested and fun and I was never bored with it.
Think the score sums up the movie quite well, not immense like the departed by all means but still entertaining for sure. The acting was decent, Reynolds although no where near Oscar worthy made a reasonable switch from teen comedy to the more intense action film. Liotta was consistent, as was Garcia as always.
Granted there are a few plot holes in the story, without giving any spoilers away, but if you can overlook these then I think you'll find the film worth watching.
Me and my friends think the writers may have got a little caught up with the complexity of the script which kind of made it little less entertaining, it wasn't direct enough for me, the Departed (sorry to compare all the time) was direct, simple and intense, this had some intensity, but seemed to get a little lost at times.
If you love gun fights and brutal action then the shooting scenes will astound you! they are brutal and probably the best part of the film. Blood, bullets and Alicia Keys, she was piping in this film!! All in all if you can see past the frailties and Ben Affleck then this is a decent film that is summed up perfectly by its rating of 7
Someone should check Joe Carnahan for performance enhancement drugs. Smokin' Aces, the wild ride of a movie he scripted and directed, is so pumped up, manic and mayhem-packed that it practically shoots sweat off the screen.
