Professor David Pollock is an expert in ancient Arabic hieroglyphics. A Middle Eastern Prime Minister convinces Pollock to infiltrate the organization of a man named Beshraavi, who is involved in a plot against the Prime Minister. The nature of the plot is believed to be found in a hieroglyphic code. Beshraavi's mistress, Yasmin Azir is a mystery intertwined in the plot. Pollock needs her help, but when she repeatedly seems to double cross him in one escapade after another, he can't decide on whose side she is working. Ultimately working together, Pollock and Yasmin decipher the plot and set out to stop an assassination of the Prime Minister.
Mild mannered American David Pollock, a professor of ancient hieroglyphics at Oxford, has been hired by Middle Eastern shipping magnate, Nejim Beshraavi, to decode a hieroglyphic written cipher, of which he has the original. What Beshraavi is unaware of is that David only took the job as a favor to Middle Eastern Prime Minister Hassan Jena, who David admires. David just met Jena for the first time on his clandestine visit to London prior to his official visit to sign a business treaty with the British government in two days' time. Jena tells him that what Beshraavi is asking him to do involves some plot orchestrated by Beshraavi, a countryman of Jena's, against his government. For Jena's security, David is not to disclose to anyone that he is doing this job for Jena, that he has even met Jena, or that Jena is already in London. This job also entails some personal risk to David's life as Beshraavi is not averse to killing to achieve whatever his goal. As David progresses on his task, he is approached by Yasmin Azir, the beautiful owner of the house where Beshraavi is staying and where David is doing the work, she who is Beshraavi's lover. She provides information which suggests that his task is more dangerous than it appears on the surface, as there are more players beyond Beshraavi interested in the cipher and its message, they who will also kill as needed to achieve their goal. However, David, who initially takes her information at face value, begins to have doubts if she is truly working in his best interest.
Gregory Peck and Sophia Loren star in "Arabesque," directed by Stanley Donen, who gave us "Charade." This isn't "Charade" - nothing could be - but this derivative film has its roots in Hitchcock and "Charade." Gregory Peck is the common man - in this case, a professor - who is more or less kidnapped to translate a cipher. While he's doing so at the home of his slimy host, he meets Sophia Loren, who tips him off that once he's deciphered this piece of paper, he's going to be eliminated. With her cooperation, he takes her as a hostage and the two start running throughout London. Along the way, the cipher is hidden, goes missing, someone picks it up - etc. The big question, what side is Loren on, and how much of whatever story she's currently telling is true?
The main interest in this film is Loren, whose beauty is staggering, as is her amazing wardrobe. She's the absolute height of chic. All eyes are on her whenever she appears in a scene - she's probably at her height as a goddess in this, no question. Peck does his usual great job as a likable, confused man. There are some fantastic scenes, including one at a construction site, and a neat twist the audience won't see coming.
Peck was 50 when he made this film. It's fascinating to see these classic middle aged-plus male stars with today's eyes. I say males because women past 40, with a few exceptions, are by that age no longer stars of yesterday's movies. We're so used to seeing eye lifts, brow lifts, and chemical peels on our male stars that men like Peck, Taylor, Holden, Power, Cooper etc., look tired and past it to us when in fact, they were often still young. Somehow, though there have now been great advances in plastic surgery, I'll take Peck, his generation, and the one before him, any time.
while this film is often compared unfavourably to charade, with good reason, it is an entertaining film.
Charade is almost perfect and it would be difficult for any other movie to match its iconic status.Gregory Peck and Sophia Loren cannot compare to Cary Grant and Audrey Hepburn but they are solid stars in their own right..Loren is not the world's best actress but she is exquisite to look at. Peck is aging but still a major star and there is an old pro's grace about him.
OK so arabesque is not charade but its a beautifully shot piece of entertainment with a good central performance from Gregory Peck and its better than 90% of the rest of the movies out there.
