Bruce Banner, a brilliant scientist with a cloudy past about his family, is involved in an accident in his laboratory causing him to become exposed to gamma radiation and Nanomeds (a tiny lifeform that is supposed to heal wounds, but has killed everything with which they have made contact). Confused and curious about his survival, Banner discovers that since the accident, whenever he becomes angry, he transforms into a giant green monster destroying everything in sight in an act of rage. Bruce's mysterious past and the answer to why the radiation had this effect becomes revealed to him as his birth father David Banner intervenes with hopes to continue experimenting on him.
Bruce Banner is different from everyone else. While working on a new technology to accelerate the healing process in animals, he is exposed to gamma radiation. Instead of killing him, the radiation turns him into the Hulk, a nearly mindless green behemoth. General Ross is tasked to contain the monster before it can endanger San Francisco, California.
Despite the generally negative reviews I had heard from friends, I rented this DVD with an open mind. I truly wanted to like the movie. I never read the comic book, so I didn't have a chip on my shoulder.
The plot was painfully slow. There is a continual feeble attempt to make you feel for Bruce Banner and his trauma, but in the end it is just annoying. There is far too much time wasted trying to explain why he is The Hulk and not enough actual Hulk. I didn't find the special effects as bad as most people have stated. I just feel that a movie about The Hulk should have more of him, instead of the tortuous wait to see him appear.
{Minor Spoilers ahead) While I usually like Nick Nolte, I thought his character (Bruce Banner's father) was horrible - probably attributed to a bad script. This is painfully evident in the "climatic" end when he meets with his son. His philisophical ramblings are a jumbled mess leaving you dazed and confused. He then morphs into some crazed lunatic monster and the whole movie falls off the precipitous edge of believability. After all, the whole point of super-hero stories is to create unbelievable characters within a believable story.
Sam Eliot also comes off weak in this movie. It feels like he is holding back, like he is fighting off some demon. Perhaps he is internally wracked by regrets at agreeing to the script. The whole sequence where he goes after The Hulk are silly. He has to call the President just to justify fielding a few Apache helicopters? C'mon! You keep waiting for them to pull out the really big stuff, but it never happens. Again, the believability just isn't there. The jet fighter scenes just don't seem real.
I give this movie 3/10. It is as flat was week-old ginger-ale.
I saw The Hulk on the 4th of July 2003 and on the same night I saw Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines!It was an excellent experience seeing both blockbusters right after the other!It was well worth it and a unique way to spend on Independence Day!
First I want to say months ago I didn't give much thought to the Hulk.Well I sure did when I saw the film!The music by Danny Elfman is great!I was really surprised this time!I didn't think he could tie his score of Batman and the Planet of the Apes!The cast was really perfect!Eric Bana played the part very good!Jennifer Connelly was really good and she was so much different than she was in the Roceteer.Sam Elliott was great!Josh Lucas play his villain part well and I hope to see him in more bad guy parts and as for Nick Nolte give him the academy award now!Lou Ferrigno looked awesome in his cameo!Ang Lee's direction was very good and his comic split screens really worked well.As for the action it was incredible!It is hard to say what I like most of the action scenes but I loved it when the Hulk was just destroying those tanks!This is a very,very,very,serious movie and there is very little humor if any and I really don't know if kids will like it because of the serious attitude and dark story it has.This isn't just another movie based on a comic book,it is very unique and all together different.The special effects were great and I loved the way the Hulk looked and he looked very real!The end of the movie was good.I am satisfied with film.I think this is what all Hulk fans have waited for!Go see it!

In an accident at a laboratory at the University of California, Berkeley, research scientist Bruce Banner (Eric Bana) is exposed to gamma radiation and nanomeds and somehow survives but discovers that he turns into a hulking, green monster whenever he gets angry. Pursued by his father (Nick Nolte) who wants to continue experimenting on Bruce, by U.S. Army General Thaddeus "Thunderbolt" Ross (Sam Elliott) who believes that Bruce is a threat to national security, and by Major Glenn Talbot (Josh Lucas) who wants to profit from the Hulk's strength and regenerative ability, Bruce tries to control his anger, prevent the transformation, and simply stay alive. The Hulk is a fictional character in Marvel Comic series, The Incredible Hulk, created by writer Stan Lee and artist Jack Kirby. The screenplay for Hulk was written by American screenwriters James Schamus, John Turman, and Michael France. Bruce and his lab partner (and girlfriend) Betty Ross (Jennifer Connelly), daughter of General Ross, were experimenting with nanomeds, tiny lifeforms that they hoped could be used to heal wounds. Unfortunately, everything (e.g., frogs) on which they've tested the nanomeds have ended up exploding. Bruce is the only one to have survived exposure. When Bruce's father David, also a research scientist whose genetic experiments were shut down when it was learned that he was experimenting upon himself, realized that his wife was pregnant, he feared what he may have passed to his child. Banner realized that his son had to be tested, and the results showed that Bruce had the potential to not be completely human (in his eyes). As the Hulk becomes increasingly enraged, he increases in size. Some of the special features on the original DVD and the Blu-ray/DVD explain it a bit. Ang Lee wanted to reflect that idea, that the more rage Bruce feels, the greater his power becomes. Lying unconscious at the bottom of the lake, Hulk survives the gamma bomb, but David is destroyed. As he rises to the surface, Bruce remembers his father as the man who lovingly tucked him into bed when he was four years old, kissing him and wishing him a good sleep. One year later, Betty is working in the lab when she gets a phone call from her father. He tells her that some loonies have reporting seeing something green and asks her if, by some chance Bruce survived the explosion and she found out about him, would she tell him. "No," Betty replies, adding that she loved Bruce and that she's the last person she would want Bruce to contact. Far off in a South American rain forest, Bruce is shown working as a doctor in a medical camp. When some soldiers attempt to steal their medical supplies, Bruce confronts them with the warning in Spanish, "You're making me angry. You wouldn't like me when I'm angry!" In the final scene, as the camera pans through the trees, the Hulk's roar can be heard. Yes, in one scene we see two security guards walking towards the camera and having a conversation. The old guy with a mustache doing most of the talking is Stan Lee, who is the Hulk's comic book creator. The other guy, the big guy, is Lou Ferrigno, who played the Hulk in the 1970s TV series. There are also multiple references to the comic books. General Ross's helicopter is named "T. Ross", referencing his comic book nickname; Hulk's first appearance is grey rather than green, referencing his first comic book incarnation; the character "Benny", who appears in the comic books, is mentioned in a conversation between Bruce and Betty; Bruce's father's name is changed to David Banner, which was Bruce's name in the TV series; and David Banner takes on several attributes of Hulk's comic-book nemeses throughout the film. No, but it was originally going to be part of a trilogy. James Schamus revealed in 2014 the unfinished sequel took place at a Native American reserve. Since the financial failure of the first film, it has been subtly rebooted as The Incredible Hulk (2008) (2008), which picks up from an unmade alternative origin story (i.e. Bruce is already the Hulk in The Incredible Hulk) and which has launched as the second installment of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. a5c7b9f00b
