In the vicinity of the liberated planet of Bajor, the Federation space station Deep Space Nine guards the opening of a stable wormhole to the far side of the galaxy. The stable wormhole discovered by the Deep Space Nine crew is known to the Bajoran people as the Celestial Temple of their Prophets. Sisko, as discoverer of the wormhole and its inhabitants, is therefore the Emissary of Bajoran prophesy. The wormhole's other end is in the Gamma Quadrant, halfway around the galaxy from Bajor. That section of space is dominated by the malevolent Dominion. The Dominion is led by the Changelings, the race of shapeshifters to which Odo belongs. As of the beginning of the sixth season, Cardassia has joined the Dominion, and together they are waging war on the Federation and their Klingon allies. The war is quickly becoming the most costly war ever for the Federation, and the Deep Space Nine crew must fight to protect their way of life. This was the worst star trek period hands down. It was silly and corny, light and mindless, but that wasn't the goal of the show. Which is why this very old time Trek fan saw this as a failure.

It did add a ton of new trek fans to the mix, but IMO this was a mixed blessing. It watered down expectations which allowed shows like Voyager to go even deeper into the well of sillyville story lines. TNG was bearable to a degree, but the deus ex machina of technology was overplayed in that show as well. OH CAPTAIN, IF WE REVERSE THE TACHYON FLUX FLOW WE WILL BE SAVED. Good god it makes me want to puke.

When I saw Axanar clips, it made me realize where the trek universe went wrong and off the rails, and that was right after the TOS ended. What a shame, now we have fantasy sci fi instead of sci fi based in real settings. Oh well, if you like this type of Star trek, all I can say is you really aren't a trek fan but a fantasy sci fi fan. Trek has no connection to it. Star Trek: Deep Space Nine was the most brilliant Star Trek series to date. It surpassed every other Trek show in every level. It was the most ambitious series ever, filled with unusual storylines for a television series. While it wasn't always up to Babylon 5's level,it still managed to maintain undeniable quality.

The characters were as well defined as the TNG characters. Sisko was easily a brilliant Starfleet captain, second only to Picard. Avery Brooks even improved as the years passed. The Emissary storyline was extremely ambitious to play on a show like Star Trek and boldly went where no man (or prophet) have been before. Jake Sisko was way more interesting than Wesley Crusher. He truly shined when given the chance.

Bashir was the best Star Trek doctor I've seen. He always managed to hold his own in the toughest moments. He always managed to be serious and funny at the same time.

Jadzia Dax was astounding! The notion of a Trill being a regular on Star Trek was mind-boggling. Some of her stories broke new ground on television such as her kissing a female Trill (Season 4's Rejoined).

Ezri Dax joined the show way too late. She was even more interesting than Jadzia. It's too bad the writers didn't have more time to explore her character.

Worf needs no introduction. It's the same Worf we've come to adore from TNG. However, it was ambitious to bring a character from a sister series to DS9. If only they attempted to do crossovers between Star Trek series....

Quark, Rom and Nog represented the Ferengi side of DS9. Unfortunately, their stories were always loathed by viewers, who always detested the Ferengi all the way back to TNG's first season. They were still interesting characters, most notably Nog, who became the first Ferengi to join Starfleet.

Kira and Odo were the two best in the station. The outcast amongst his people and the Bajoran freedom fighter provided unusual contrast to the familiar Starfleet atmosphere, showing the gritty side of Star Trek. Their episodes were always among the best. Season 1's Duet was at the top of that list.

No other Trek series was as bold as to build continuing story arcs from season to season. That's the point Voyager suffered badly. DS9's writers pulled the unbelievable on the viewers. Events like the Dominion invasion, the Maquis rebellion, the Bajoran coup, the Cardassian betrayal and the Klingon-Federation war redefined politics in the Star Trek universe.

DS9 was fortunate to have brilliant writers. Few people could write drama, comedy, action, war and angst maintaining character focus, not to mention adding brilliant dialogue. The conflicts were both external and internal. It wouldn't be possible without the efforts of Ira Steven Behr and Robert Hewitt Wolfe. And to keep DS9 tied to the rest of the Trek universe, they had Ronald D Moore and René Echevarria fresh from TNG ready to bring their creative potential to this series as well.

In short, every Season was brilliant in its own way. Some more than others. Season 1 was the weakest, but still delivered brilliant stories. Season 2 was a major improvement. Season 3 suffered a minor setback, but still stayed on track. Season 4 was the most powerful, brilliant season I've seen in Star Trek history. I didn't believe when I saw it from "The Way of the Warrior", through "Shattered Mirror" to "Broken Link". Season 5 was just as good as Season 4. Seasons 6 and 7 were even more ambitious when the war began and continuity became evident.

DS9 had more recurring characters than any TV series I can remember. From Garak, Dukat, Damar, Weyoun, Martok, Kasidy to Zek, Keiko, Ross and so many others. Sometimes DS9 focused more on the recurring characters than the regulars themselves.

DS9 was way too underrated. It required good attention to keep up with it. And viewers don't like to maintain attention. They prefer being casual, and shows like Babylon 5 and DS9 won't give that break.

Nonetheless I praise DS9 as one of the finest TV shows ever written, produced, directed and acted to date and the best gem in the Star Trek franchise. reminisce about events that took place between O'Brien and WILL Riker on board the Enterprise, as TOM Riker would have no knowledge of such events and would possibly be exposed. Giving the Chief the cold shoulder allowed Tom to go about his business without O'Brien uncovering who he really was. Unfortunately, they aren't. This applies to the DVD releases. Due to Britain's strict policy some episodes had to be cut in order to avoid a higher rating. Because of cost-efficiency, these masters were used for nearly all European DVD releases as well. To the Death (1996) and Sons and Daughters (1997) are affected. One can find a detailed comparison for 4.23 here and for 6.03 there. It takes place from the years 2369-2375 A.D. Yes; however, these earlier episodes will help to understand what's happening in DS9.
