An Islamic themed drama series inspired by true events and based upon historical characters in Islam. About the heroic efforts of Ertugrul Ghazi, the father of Uthman (founder of the Ottoman Empire). It's about the struggles he faced alongside his nomadic tribe in finding a secure settlement to live, how he defended their lands and liberated other lands from oppressive rulers (Crusaders and Mongols) - full of scenes of tawakkul (reliance on Allah), honour, spiritually uplifting and emotional at times, treachery, greed for power, fairness and justice, intertwined with tales of love, humbleness, respect for Awliya, power of zikr, brotherhood, unity and traditions.
As the holy acrimonious crusades swept through Middle East, nomad Turkish tribes fought their way into the new promised land. A young but brave warrior, Erutgrul Ghazi, the son of Suleiman Shah after the death of his father had to take charge of the situation in his tribe. From crusaders to Byzantine, Ertugrul together with his companions strived through the bad doers. A huge problem showed up in the horizon. The malicious Mongols with the maverick Noyan in charge threatened their camp.
Best of best, I can not stop watching.There is love, war, history, everything...
Have been binge watching this show on Netflix, a life investment considering how many episodes there are, and I'm over 100 episodes down the rabbit hole. Overall, I really love watching the characters struggle against a conveyor belt of despair-inducing trials.
However, I have a couple of issues with the show which I'll write here in case anyone in production actually reads and wants to improve things, especially for the Western viewer.
Subtitles - many many errors. Treacher instead of traitor, lots of spelling and grammar mix-ups. Get someone to edit who has English as their first language. I'm practically willing to volunteer my services at this point.
Selcan - Her character reveals to me that these people suck at communicating with each other! She can't explain anything without crying and being an emotional wreckball. She backs up nothing with actual facts. The same is true for Halime and Ertugrul.
"If you see something, say something." People talk all about their feelings and distrust of people but give no actual facts. The characters witness all kinds of shadiness but no one has the idea to tell people about it, right away. Communication, in general, is nerve wracking for me to watch.
Long and drawn out (stories, riding around on horses, etc.)- Cut those scenes with some action or just cut them down a bit. I hate fast-forwarding which feels like you're skipping pages in a book, but it gets a little ridiculous.
Overused phrases - for example, if I hear "What are you saying?" one more time..... mix it up!
Sword clanging noise - they overuse this one specific sword-clanging- on-sword sound effect. Considering how much swashbuckling goes on in this show, it would benefit them to add in a few variations so it's less grating to the viewer.
Other cheeseball sound effects such as the snake rattling when a bad guy enters the room are way too garish. We get it, we know she's bad, easy on the poor snakes.
I recently traveled to Europe and while waiting in the customs line, a flight from Turkey had deplaned. To my amazement, I understood a couple of words people said around me. Pretty sure I have maybe a 20 word vocabulary at this point, an interesting side-effect of watching.
So take the good and the bad - it's a campy, soapy, historically liberal period piece with a very Islamic bent that is not so politically correct for the Western infidel. But it's also an inspiring tale of fortitude that portrays men and women practicing heroic virtue without being compromised as people by having to show a bunch of skin on screen. As a Catholic, I find the prayers to be shockingly personal and genuine which is a nice window into the religion of Islam.
