Survivors of a nuclear attack are grouped together for days in the basement of their apartment building, where fear and dwindling supplies wear away at their dynamic.
Nuclear explosions force the residents of a New York apartment block to run from the building. However, the explosions force them into a basement. Eight residents are holed up in the building's bomb shelter. They must acclimatise to each other in difficult, cramped conditions.
The plot is fairly predictable for a post apocalyptic movie. Actors despite being relatively unknown portray realistic believable roles with strong captivating emotion and interaction. Plot is fairly cliché however has rather brutal and heart wrenching moments. Movie did not meet its full potential likely due to rather unimaginative story and script writing.
As Eva looks out from her apartment window over New York City, the nukes are falling and explosions reach into the sky. Suddenly the inhabitants of the apartment block are racing towards their escape but they become trapped in the basement of the building. Nine survivors are left in all; Eva herself and her boyfriend Sam, Mickey (the grizzled and creepy apartment supervisor), Josh, Bobby and Adrien (three young and pretty arrogant men), mother and daughter Marilyn and Wendi and, last but not least, Delvin.
They have limited food and water and more than adequate living space but what instantly becomes hard to live with is the trust people have in each other and especially between Mickey and the people he has allowed into his basement. Being trapped under a collapsed apartment block as nuclear fallout rains down in ash and dust is impossible enough to live with as it is, but soon enough, other factors add to the survivors' difficulties as they soon learn that they have in fact been invaded. To add to these difficulties, the creeping insanity of their predicament begins to infect each and every character in their own unique ways.
As the plot unfolds, the character dynamics begin to change through circumstance and as leaderships are assumed, overthrown and then dictated, matters go from bleak, to dark and then to pitch black. The dynamic of this film as a whole is that if things can get worse, they will. And if matters can't get any worse anymore, they most definitely will anyway.
Director Xavier Gens and writers Karl Mueller & Eron Sheean have however managed to divert such a plot from depressing the hell out of me by keeping me on the edge of my seat even in the quieter moments. So have the actors who have put to shame every other film I have seen this year in terms of ensemble characterisation and they are just about the greatest reason as to why this film is so effective.
Michael Biehn (Terminator's Kyle Reese/Alien's Corporal Hicks) provides possibly his greatest acting to date as Mickey. Not to spoil the back story to his character but he has taken something tragic and dark and turned it into his own defining moment as a comeback actor from the days of 80's action fests.
Other actors who have done exceptionally well (as always for some) are Coutney B. Vance, Heroes' Milo Ventimiglia and especially Michael Ecklund and Rosanna Arquette. The acting range of the entire cast is so surprisingly flexible and yet completely believable that stretching from grim drama to chilling and often sickening suspense horror happens so easily, and that is mostly what kept me holding my breath throughout.
Speaking of it being an independent film, the cinematography, art direction, special effects and visual effects are so well executed but do not assume control of the film as I first feared when I saw some of the cast and plot elements their characters had to deal with. I was afraid that lead actress Lauren German would remain completely detached throughout, as would Arquette and other actors in minor roles. But the film escalates towards its climax in good time, utilising the best of what it has to offer when necessary, yet never losing momentum and shock value the more it gains momentum.
The Divide is a mould breaker in so many ways, yet I wonder if its refusal to be labelled in any primary or secondary genre is what has made it hard to market. I would class it as an Apocalyptic Chiller personally because to class it as a drama would probably receive a lot of harsh criticism from people who can't hack their horror, yet to call it a horror would misinterpret it and take away its credibility as a brilliantly acted film.
I have faith again in modern film... funny that it took the rather inexperienced director of Hit-man to bring such a film to my attention but Xavier Gans has done a brilliant job in stepping away from the mainstream! Watch with the lights out, quietly... maybe with a tin of spam or baked beans to hand!
In Xavier Gens's The Divide, the revolution will not be televised, only the degradation of human civility--and in a mire of clichés more toxic to the mind than the radioactive dust that causes everyone's hair to fall out in the wake of a nuclear explosion.
When comparing both versions, we see that the unrated cut contains material that's more or less helpful for character development. Towards the climax of the movie, it becomes apparent that the R-Rated misses some scenes that take some of the sick intensity of the events (e.g. the second sex scene). a5c7b9f00b
