With Superman dead, the world needs a new band of superheroes to step into the breach. Senior US Intelligence officer Amanda Waller comes up with a daring plan - use extreme criminals with special abilities to fight crime, in exchange for them receiving reduced sentences. The band of crime-fighting criminals is officially known as Task Force X, but due to the nature of their mission a more appropriate name would be Suicide Squad.
After the death of Superman, the leader of a secret agency, Amanda Waller, convinces the government to recruit super-villains imprisoned in Belle Reve to protect the world. She summons the hit-man Deadshot; The Joker's girlfriend and former psychiatrist Harley Quinn; the pyrokinetic Diablo; the bank thief Captain Boomerang; the mutant Killer Croc; the criminal Slipknot; and the witch Enchantress who possessed the former archaeologist, June Moone, to form Task Force X. Waller also assigns the command of the team to Colonel Rick Flag, who is in love with June. To convince the group to obey orders, a nanite bomb is implanted in the neck of each member. When Enchantress releases her powerful brother, they besiege Midway City turning the residents into an army of monsters and building a powerful weapon. Meanwhile, the Joker is plotting a plan to rescue his beloved Harley Quinn.
Plus: Good solid build up, nice main character introductions. Margot Robbie almost carries the film with her brilliant acting, making you wish there will be a Joker/Harley Quinn spin-off. The action doesn't become boring as in many other super hero flicks. Great styling, sets and casting. Some nice jokes. A nice attempt to try and get sympathy for the villains setting some kind of moral complexity, but it doesn't come off very strong. Minus: Of course the movie is full of cliche's and false sentiments, Will Smith get's way too much screen time as a less interesting character claiming the moral high ground, compared to Jared Leto as the Joker, who gets way to little screen time. Cara Delevinge is a horrid casting choice for the role of a professor, her acting is weak, she's way too young and unconvincing as the witch. The whole is pretty predictable, but will leave most Marvel fans happy to have seen it.
Like most reviewers, I enjoyed the first 20 minutes. It had a fun tone. It felt like a movie that wasn't going to take itself too serious (like, dare I say it, Deadpool). But then... it does.
It's hard to even begin where this movie goes wrong, but I'll give it a try. So many characters are shoehorned in that you don't really get to know any of them. They become one-dimensional characters with stupid one-liners. Especially Harley Quinn's sad attempts at being funny. It's cringe worthy. They try to rush the story forward, while also trying to build its characters. This is done with flashbacks that sometimes pop up so randomly and appear to hold no bearing on the story or the character for that matter(!). They're more like visual anecdotes, that contain stupid trivia. It's at this point that you realize things are only going downhill from here. The action is lackluster (and doesn't even get the chance to shine because the whole movie is set in a dark, rainy environment). The acting is downright bad (yes, even Leto's Joker and Robbie's Quinn). Only Will Smith's Deadshot and Viola Davis' Amanda Waller were great. They really carried this movie and made it bearable.
As for the plot. There wasn't really any. I could go on about how big of a mess this movie is and how the villain was stupid, but frankly I don't want to waste any further time discussing this...
Suicide Squad never has the courage of its convictions — it doesn’t own anything. At best, Ayer rents some pre-existing pop iconography and charges us $15 to watch him take it around the block for a spin. Forget the “Worst. Heroes. Ever.” These guys don’t even know how to be bad.
No, Slade Wilson a.k.a. Death stroke does not appear in the film. But he has recently been revealed to be the main villain in the solo Batman film with Joe Manganiello playing the role. The Joker is in the film, however, he isn't part of the Squad. He appears as a third party with his own agenda. Batman appears in flashbacks as the one who captures Deadshot and Harley Quinn. Bruce Wayne also appears in a mid-credit sequence where he acquires the details on the Meta-Humans from Amanda Waller. It's called "The House of the Rising Sun" and is performed by The Animals. You can find the complete list of songs with scene descriptions here. Trailer 1 (released at 2015 Comic-Con): "I Started a Joke" sung by Becky Hanson from a group called C.M.X. As of 4/4/2016, the song from the actual trailer is not available for sale or download. There have been fake covers of this particular version available on iTunes, but it is not the version from the trailer. The original version of this song was from the Bee Gees from their 1968 album Idea. Trailer 2: "Bohemian Rhapsody" by Queen, from their 1975 album A Night at the Opera. Trailer 3: Subtitled "Blitz" so named because the song is "The Ballroom Blitz" by "Sweet", 1973.GQ (Scott Eastwood) would have been killed when he detonated the bomb. Although if the bomb was a shape charge, the blast may have been entirely upwards and away from him. Given his close proximity in a confined space, the size of the blast, and the fact he isn't seen again, it's likely he was killed. The Flash has a brief cameo as the one who apprehends Captain Boomerang. Aquaman's personnel file is seen during the mid-credit sequence. For two reasons: to claim her heart back from Waller, who kept it under lock and key as a weakness to exploit. When Waller first has June Moone reveal her abilities as Enchantress, the heart is revealed to be kept in a briefcase only Waller can open or deactivate by thumbprint with a small bomb inside that will detonate at the first sign of trouble. When Enchantress first tries to take her heart back before unleashing Incubus on Midway City, she appears in Waller's bedroom and approaches the briefcase, only to see it trigger an alarm Waller programed before falling asleep. If she'd moved closer and tried to take it, the bomb more than likely would have gone off and killed Enchantress's spirit. So she had to be clever about getting the heart back and making sure Waller couldn't do anything to hurt or permanently damage it. Also, to exploit Waller's knowledge of top secret government facilities in her rampage of destruction. Waller is revealed to a woman who makes it her business to know everyone's secrets as a way to stay on top when she needs to. When Enchantress's machine is destroying the satellites and secret military bases, people are heard asking how Enchantress is aware of these facilities. It then immediately cuts to Waller with a tube in her head pumping information into the machine. ....staff at her headquarters? Most likely to cover her tracks, it was she who chose to try to exploit the Enchantress for espionage purposes so it was she who would ultimately be held responsible for the tragedy overcoming the city. From a cinematic point of view it demonstrated that even though she is a "good guy" she is cold-hearted and absolutely ruthless in order to achieve her goals. Especially in contrast to the squad itself. Footage removed for censorship is nowhere to be found in the Extended Version. Contentwise, a new path has not been struck either. In other words, if you enjoyed the movie, there's a bit more for you to enjoy. If you did not like the Theatrical Version, odds are you will not be thrilled by the Extended Version either. a5c7b9f00b
