Sydney Bristow is a young, athletic, college graduate who was recruited her freshman year as a secret agent for SD-6, a top-secret branch of the CIA. After a few years -- after Sydney confides her lifestyle to her boyfriend, the evil head of SD-6 -- Arvin Sloan, has him killed. Sydney learns that SD-6 is part of a rogue international agency called the Alliance of 12, out to rule the world. She becomes a double agent, working with the real CIA to bring down SD-6 with the assistance of her handler, Michael Vaughn, and her estranged father Jack Bristow -- also a double agent. Along the way, Sydney fights various rival agents, rival terrorist groups, and traitors all the while keeping her cloak-and-dagger lifestyle a secret from her friends. (Season 1)
For seven years, Sydney Bristow believed she was working for a covert branch of the CIA, named SD-6. However, when she tells her fiance of her job, Arvin Sloane, head of SD-6 and an old family friend, has him murdered. With this life-shattering event, Sydney learns not only that SD-6 is a mercenary group of terrorists, but that her father, too, works for SD-6. Sydney then works with the CIA as a double agent, trying to bring down SD-6 with her father, a second double. This is only the beginning of a path of betrayal, murder, lies, and disbelief. Sydney Bristow pushes through trials of love, learns the truth about her mother, loses a friend in an utter form of incredulity, pitfalls herself into months of torture and puzzlement, and is tormented with countless revelations to come.
This show is one of the most consistently entertaining shows I have seen. If you've a mind to, as many seem to do, you can find any number of reasons to rate this programme lowly but it is undoubtedly one of the best shows of recent years. It doesn't take itself too seriously but manages to involve the viewer time after time with character development and the intricate plotting. Garner takes on the lead role enthusiastically and, even in the most absurd situations, carries it all off with great aplomb. Victor Garber, as Jack Bristow, is the mainstay of the show and deals with everything that comes his way in a professional and confident manner. All the other characters (and actors) fulfil their roles superbly. Anyone who thinks this show is poor either enjoys badmouthing or cannot appreciate simple enjoyment. Sit back and enjoy.
Simply put: Alias is a hype job.
It pretends to be a lot of things that it's not.
First of all, it pretend to be that intelligent, complicated spy thriller. Of course, to be "intelligent" requires something other than ridiculous situations and plot holes galore. I know, that's exactly what 24 does... but 24 picked up the hype where Alias left it and is no more intelligent than Alias.
J.J. Abrams is really good at hyping himself, and unfortunately in today's Hollywood environment where TV executives are only worried about appearing hip and edgy, that's all that's required. Actual quality in J.J. Abrams' writing? There is none.
Then there is Jennifer Garner. A decent but not stellar actress in other projects, she gives some of her worst performances in alias. Why? Because all she does is pout and mug for the camera. Understandable. After all J.J. Abrams thinks of Alias as a fashion show and knows the only thing that'll keep them tuning in is to show Jennifer in various states of undress and funky costumes.
Look no further than the main titles to see that's all Alias was about: a fashion show.
