In the Dzhugdzhur Mountains, Eastern Siberia, the criminal Dieter Von Cunth steals a Russian X5 nuclear warhead. Colonel James Faith travels to Rio Bamba, Ecuador, with the efficient Lieutenant Dixon Piper to summon the retired special operative MacGruber to retrieve the X5. MacGruber is considered deceased after the death of his beloved wife Casey by his archenemy Cunth in their wedding. MacGruber teams up with Piper and Vicki St. Elmo and they learn that the evil Cunth intends to use the warhead to destroy Washington D.C. Former special operative MacGruber is called back into action to take down his arch-enemy, Dieter Von Cunth, who's in possession of a nuclear warhead and bent on destroying Washington, D.C. Not even worth having on in the background while you are doing something else. I like a lot of silly, ridiculous comedies. Many with low budgets. But this was as if they took one of the worse Saturday Night Live skits, one of those you can't believe they really thought was going to be funny, and stretched it out into a movie. I tried to stick with it, thinking it had to get better, but had to turn it off after 45min. Even running at higher speed from my DVR didn't help. Not every review requires 10 lines. This new requirement of 10 lines minimum is total idiocy. Or, is it an attempt to skew the submitted reviews toward the positive since it is a lot easier to think of more things to say about decent movies. When a movie is completely bad throughout with terrible acting, directing and writing, how many words does it take to describe that? IMDb change your policy! I went to see this movie after hearing a CNN critic say he "really, really, really liked it" and the sex scenes were "hilarious and inventive." Having seen and enjoyed several of the SNL MacGruber skits, I naturally thought "how could I lose." Well I feel I lost big time. There was a time when SNL skits bordered on impropriety but were almost always clever. Today it seems we must be assaulted with in-your-face impropriety with only hints of cleverness. I am not a prude. But what I saw of the sex scenes in MacGruber was quite simply crass and disgusting. This is not a complete review because I did something I have not done in a long time. Eventually I got fed up and walked out. If this is what now must pass for "hilarious and inventive" we truly have sunk to new depths as a society. Will, Kristen and crew, please, don't waste your considerable talents on this kind of insult to our intelligence! Kilmer makes a worthy, if somewhat underscripted villain. And some of the bits -- MacGruber idiotically setting traps that the bad guys never fall for -- tickle. But this still feels instantly dated, a "Hot Rod in a Role Models" era. MacGruber is based on a Saturday Night Live skit of the same name. The skit itself was a parody of the TV series MacGyver (1985) (1985-1992). The screenplay for MacGruber was written by the Saturday Night Live screenwriting team of Will Forte and John Solomon along with American filmmaker Jorma Taccone, who also directed the movie. "Touch and Go" by Emerson, Lake, and Powell is the song that plays during the montage as he checks off the names on his list. This comedy was released rated R in theaters worldwide. In the US, the DVD and Blu-ray disc releases contain this version alongside a longer unrated cut which adds more story and dialogue as well as more spicy material. a5c7b9f00b
