In the future when the aging gene has been switched off, people must pay to stay alive. To avoid overpopulation, time has become the currency that people use to pay for luxuries and necessities from a clock implanted in their forearm. This can easily be transferred among individuals on body contact. The rich can live forever, while the rest try to negotiate for their immortality. A poor young man is accused of murder when he inherits a fortune of time from a dead upper class man, though too late to help his mother from dying. He is forced to go on the run from a corrupt police force known as 'time keepers'.
In a future society people have been engineered not to age once reaching 25 but can only live for one more year as time is now the currency. Those who trade it can live for more than a 100 years. Society's classes are divided into what they call time zones. The richest live in the Greenwich section. One of the residents of Greenwich wanders into the poor section where someone sees how much time he has which is 100 years and wants to steal it. Will Salas, a decent guy saves him but he tells Will that he wanted to die because he's tired of a system wherein someone has to die for others to live. While Will is sleeping he gives Will his time and walks off to die. Will goes off to share it with his mother but she dies because of inflation. Will heads off to Greenwich. He then meets a girl named Sylvia whose father is the one behind the system. A law enforcement office known as a Timekeeper who's investigating the death of the man who gave Will his time, assumes that Will stole it. So he confiscates it and arrests Will. Will then takes Sylvia hostage and runs off with her. He goes back to his time zone and asks for a ransom but when her father doesn't give it. He lets her go but when she's in danger Will saves her and they decide to work together to take down the system.
Time has become the ultimate currency.

The rich "earn" decades at a time (remaining at age 25), becoming essentially immortal, while the rest beg, borrow or steal enough hours to make it through the day.
When a man from the wrong side of the tracks is falsely accused of murder, he is forced to go on the run with a beautiful hostage.
Living minute to minute, the duo's love becomes a powerful tool in their war against the system....
With Andrew Niccol at the helm, I was expecting something along the lines of Gattaca and Logans run.
Now while the film is by no means bad, it can get a little bit boring with all the love subplot.
Timberlake is surprisingly good in his first proper starring role, and he carries the film well. But as always, there is someone who always steals the limelight, Cillain Murphy is the culprit here, the oldest looking 25 year old known to man, and as bad-ass as the clothes he wears.
But all the intellect Niccol had with his previous films (even s1m0ne) has all but vanished in order to keep the chase element going.
The idea of time as a currency is neat, but never fully explained how it came about, and seriously, it gets a bit weird having such a beautiful mother as Olivia Wilde.
It's all very dystopian, in a 'the grass is never greener' kind of way, and i suppose it does ask the question, would your mind really be fed up of livivng so long?
In this sort of film maybe, because you can only live for ever if your going to have money/time/whatever, but if you were going to spend forever with Amanda Seyfried, would it be that bad?
Not as good as it should have been, not as bad as expected, but just an average movie, which is a disappointment, given the rich narrative.
And for some reason, this film feels like it should have been released in 1998, it has a really late nineties feel to it.
I kept my expectations low for this film, but obviously not low enough. It really is a great concept and this movie should be an example of what happens when you take a great idea and spend two hours not treating that idea with any respect. Because the movie is based in a world where the economy is time, the pacing of the film is tantamount to its success or failure. And that's why it's such a letdown, because the pacing is so off, characters die before they even take one step in development.
If the plot is tight, you expect that sort of stuff. But the plot is meandering and the rules of time appear to be broken on a whim. The characters seem to have only minutes left in some scenes and then they proceed on, as if time doesn't really matter to them. Maybe a director's cut can restore some of the obviously cut scenes and correct the balance, but I don't know, this movie is just a mess. It seems like it's meant to bring the Occupy movement to the cinema. If you think redistribution of wealth is the path to prosperity, heck, you'll probably love this film, despite all its shortcomings and abuse of age-old story conventions. In Time is a cotton candy reverie for simple minded anarchists and for everyone else, a bad drawing of a great looking model.
Justin Timberlake can't elevate what amounts to relatively simplistic, formulaic material, but his headlining turn exhibits sufficient charisma and wit to make In Time a passably diverting action-packed waste of time.
