Berlin, 1941. Five friends eager to become heroes in an adventure that will change the face of Europe - and that will forever change them as well. Level-headed, highly decorated officer Wilhelm is off to the eastern front with his younger brother Friedhelm, a sensitive dreamer more interested in literature than warfare. Deeply in love with Wilhelm is Charlotte, a young nurse who looks forward to serving in the Wehrmacht, also on the eastern front. While Greta is a talented singer who longs to become another Marlene Dietrich, her Jewish boyfriend Viktor still cannot convince his parents to leave Germany... Valor and courage come to the fore, but also betrayal - of values, beliefs, humanity. Friedhelm turns into a soulless killing machine... Wilhelm deserts his troops and is court-martialed... Charlotte's Nazi ideology crumbles when she betrays a Jewish nurse helping the German army... Greta obtains papers for Viktor's escape by selling herself to an SS colonel. They and millions of others wanted to be heroes; but none of them could imagine what the war would ultimately do to them and to the rest of the world.

I have just watched the final episode of the mini series (shown in Ireland with English subtitles). To be honest, I understand why some reviewers are angry at the depiction of the AK's anti-semitism. There is no doubt that anti-semitism was prevalent throughout Europe (and still is to some extent), lets not forget that local support was essential in the Europe wide round up of the Jewish population. This was certainly true in central and eastern Europe. However, the scene where the AK partisans cruelly left a consignment of holocaust victims locked in a train was simply an unnecessary and offensive exaggeration.
The AK leader is a poorly and lazily drawn caricature, and this is my problem with the series as a whole; the writing is simply awful. The plot depends on a series of most unlikely chance meetings on what was a crowded, chaotic and fast moving front. The story develops with coincidence following coincidence, in an almost childish manner. It was truly farcical and detracted from the intent to depict events in gritty realism (ala Band of Brothers).
As regards representing the historical context, I think it was fair enough (with the obvious exception of the AK extreme anti-semitism). The German people in general supported the war (not just Nazis). The war in the east was most brutal and barbaric with no regard for the Geneva Convention.. The Wehrmacht were guilty of war crimes (not just Nazis, SS and Einsatzgruppen) . The Red Army also committed war crimes. Anti-semitism was widespread.
Pity about the writing.
One has to admit some good performances by the young ensemble, the attention to detail, all the effort that did go into this mini-series. Yet, it did not touch me quite a lot. The pacing could be better, the time compression is non-credible. The way it is directed did ignite anything in me, a point that a lot of German TV-productions are notorious for. Too bad the directing is best during combat scenes. Was this something the makers intend to get across? A good fighting performance to attract attention? Between the fighting, at times the actors appear like wooden puppies, wielding portentous pathetic lines of dialog. Not an insult to them, please. But along with the directing, a kingdom for a better script.
The aspect the film fails most about is WHY young Germans became so blunt after entering the war as soldiers. They just marched off and became murderers of civilians or POWs. Just because orders were given? Just because bullets and grenades were flying? Was it that easy? Or maybe, was it due to conservative resentment, do-your-duty-education, the ideological penetration by the regime, abandon, sheer bellicosity? From watching this film, we couldn't answer.
Take Friedhelm (splendid: Tom Schilling): In Part 1 he's lost, cynical and inefficient as a soldier, an apparent risk for the platoon, being bullied and beaten up by his own comrades. By the beginning of Part 2, all of a sudden he appears to be a walking killing machine, blunt, cold-blooded, deadly effective, shooting even civilians without the slightest hesitation. Why? How?
Speaking generally: What were (and are!) the reasons that human beings become such during wartime, forfeiting humanity? What's the setup, how's the development, what triggers it? A valuable point the film could have made. What a pity it didn't.
Don't get me wrong, the cause is good - break the silence, try to put the horror in moving pictures that the grandparents barely could speak of, but please do it in an encompassing manner and don't just scratch the surface.
And if I may add this: Cause a discussion. Understand how war undermines the human spirit. Accept responsibility. It is better that way than shutting up for a lifetime. The other way round, go to countries like, for example Austria, have a close look and understand how the collective mind of a society suffers, when coping with the guilt of the ancestors was never tried hard.
It plays like a conventional melodrama with better-than-average production values.
