It is the 23rd Century and vacationing Captain Kirk faces two challenges: climbing Yosemite's El Capitan and teaching campfire songs to Spock. But vacations are cut short when a renegade Vulcan with a startling secret hijacks the Enterprise in order to find a mythical planet. Kirk and his crew set out to stop this madman in an adventure that takes them to the center of the universe and, perhaps, before the face of God. With the crew under Vulcan control, the captain must rely on an unlikely alliance to save the galaxy. Meanwhile, a Klingon captain wants to make a name for himself and sets out to pursue the Enterprise and intercept Kirk. Captain Kirk and his crew must deal with Mr. Spock's long-lost half-brother who hijacks the Enterprise for an obsessive search for God at the center of the galaxy. I recently bought the Bluray box set with all Star Trek movies and am watching them in sequence. While I have seen them before they have been very spread out so it is fun to watch in sequence.

Getting to ST5: Final Frontier. What an utter waste of time and disappointment!

Considering that Star Trek 2, 3, 4 were all decent to very good films to follow in the footsteps of those greats and then have this? I would not have minded that this was a mediocre film but this was just downright awful.

As for what makes it so awful, the overarching issue of this film is that it just lacks any and all direction. It is more like you are just watching a random sequence of scenes that have been poorly glued together on the story board by a child with a glue stick.

90% of the scenes in this movie (and I am not at all kidding!) are utterly useless and pointless for the plot of the movie. In fact if you took out all the useless scenes that did nothing at all for character building, story building and was not related in any shape, way, or form to the main plot you would have a 30 minute movie!

This movie is in fact 1 hours and 50 minutes long and because of the utter usefulness of majority of the scenes it felt more like a 3 hour long movie. After 40 minutes I had felt like I had been watching this for an eternity. It was that slow and that boring.

The acting is bad, the story is beyond simplistic, editing is horrendous and the synergy between the actors is horrendous and at times cringe worthy.

Having a look at William Shatner's IMDb page I see that luckily this is the only Star Trek movie he wrote and directed and thus luckily the next movies should be better as I would rather kill myself before sitting through another movie this bad.

I mention Shatner because you really can tell that at the time he directed and wrote this movie he clearly was suffering from self delusion and ego. There are too many scenes where he overacts (no director to tell him he is doing it bad) and many scenes feel written just to prop him in front and center of the scene.

The movie as a whole is cheesy and full of plot holes deep enough to sink an oil tanker in and then still have space left over.

Just a disaster and I feel bad for all the other actors for having to go through this experience and utter waste of time. This is the kind of movie that usually ruins careers as well and it all would have been Shatner's fault. Even not being a fan of the "Star Trek" movies or universe of shows and books and such, I still find some enjoyment in some of the movies featuring the old cast and in the case of "First Contact" even the new cast a bit. This one though was kind of sad to watch...it seemed to want to be so much, but it failed on so many levels to be one of the worst Star Trek movies. The plot is very far fetched seeming to want to combine three or four stories into one ultimate Trek adventure, but it ends up an unfunny when it tries to be, not tense when it wants to be and not action packed like it tries to be mess of inconsistencies. The whole movie to take a phrase from Spock is illogical. The effects are nothing special as I have seen episodes of Next Generation that are just as good, which is to say it is fine for a television show, but not a major motion picture. The plot is laughable as the gang at first tries to stop Spock's brother then joins him on his quest to find God, yes you read that correctly. The Klingons make a tacked on appearance, which actually will set up the much better Undiscovered Country movie. All in all you know it is bad when the best part of the film is Kirk, Bones and Spock singing row your boat, well Spock was not really singing, but rather questioning the lyrics. Captain Kirk and his crew go where too many film makers have too often gone before. While most of the Enterprise's crew are on shore leave, chief engineer Montgomery "Scotty" Scott (James Doohan) and communications officer Lt Uhura (Nichelle Nichols) stay behind to effect repairs on the new Enterprise NCC-1701A. When they learn of a terrorist uprising on Nimbus III, the planet of Galactic Peace, they are ordered by Starfleet to reassemble their crew and investigate. A renegade Vulcan named Sybok (Laurence Luckinbill) has taken three ambassadors—Klingon General Korrd (Charles Cooper), Romulan Caithlin Dar ()—all for the purpose of commandeering the Enterprise in order to search the center of the galaxy for the planet Sha Ka Ree, which he is certain is the home of the Creator. Unfortunately, hot on their tail is a Klingon Bird of Prey, piloted by Klingon commander Klaa (Todd Bryant) who is trying to make a name for himself by capturing Admiral James T Kirk (William Shatner). A year after the previous film, 2287 A.D. Realizing that the entity on Sha Ka Ree is not God but a planet-bound entity that was either created by or attracted to Sybok's arrogance, Kirk, Spock, and McCoy attempt to escape in the shuttle, but the angry entity begins to wreak havoc on the planet's surface. Kirk requests that the Enterprise, still suffering transporter problems, beam up Spock and McCoy first. Just as Kirk is about the be beamed aboard, the Klingon warbird attacks, demanding that Kirk be handed over to them. Spock appeals to Klingon Ambassador Korrd for help. Korrd orders the Klingon ship to destroy the entity and beam Kirk aboard. Korrd orders Klaa to apologize for his unauthorized attack on the Enterprise, and it is pointed out that their "new gunner" Spock is the one who fired on the entity. Kirk says that he thought he was going to die, but Spock assures him that he was never alone. Later, both the Starfleet and the Klingon crews are shown celebrating together on the Enterprise, suggesting the beginning of a Klingon/Starfleet collaboration. During the celebration, McCoy speculates as to whether God is really out there, but Kirk suggest that God is really in our hearts. Spock points out that he has lost a brother, and Kirk reminds him that he (Kirk) also lost a brother once but that he was lucky to get him back. In the final scene, Kirk, Spock and McCoy are again out camping. The three of them are finally able to sing "Row, Row, Row Your Boat" together. Yes. Star TrekV: The Final Frontier, a novelization of the movie by American science fiction writer J.M. Dillard (pen name for Jeanne Kalogridis), was released in 1989. So far, there are 13. Star Trek V: The Final Frontier was preceded by Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979) (1979), Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan (1982) (1982), Star Trek III: The Search for Spock (1984) (1984), and Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home (1986) (1986), and followed by Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country (1991) (1991), all of which featured the Enterprise captained by James T Kirk. Star Trek: Generations (1994) (1994) unites Kirk's crew with the crew of the Enterprise captained by Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart). The other Star Trek movies featuring Picard as captain include: Star Trek: First Contact (1996) (1996), Star Trek: Insurrection (1998) (1998), and Star Trek: Nemesis (2002) (2002). Star Trek (2009) (2009), Star Trek: Into Darkness (2013) (2013) and Star Trek: Beyond (2016) (2016) harken to an alternate reality in which Kirk was just beginning his career with Starfleet Academy. a5c7b9f00b
