This action film, directed by the Hughes brothers, depicts a heist of old bills, retired from circulation and destined by the government to be "money to burn." However, more broadly, it addresses the issues of Black Americans' involvement in the Vietnam War and their subsequent disillusionment with progress in social issues and civil rights back home in the United States, during the 1960's.
A Vietnam vet adjusts to life after the war while trying to support his family, but the chance of a better life may involve crime and bloodshed.
A big shout out to the other reviewers who pointed out that the ending of this movie spoiled what was otherwise a superb black masterpiece. Watch the last twenty minutes and you can really sense the Hughes brothers losing their nerve and fumbling with loose ends.
Where the movie should have ended was at the table, counting up the money, when Skip Tucker says, "people out of work everywhere and the government just be throwing money away!" and then old Kirby says, "you know Uncle Sam -- money to burn." End the movie there and you would have had a terrifying, subversive classic, like "Across 110th Street" or "Sweet Sweetback." But end it with Anthony on the way to jail and it's another middlebrow tale of "Law and Order" white folks' style.
By the way, most of the Vietnam section seems to have been copied almost word for word from Wallace Terry's book BLOODS. Don't miss this book if you want to learn what Vietnam was like for black Americans. Another good book is FALLEN ANGELS by Walter Dean Myers.
One final thought -- watch the performance of Larenz Tate in this movie. He goes from happy go lucky all-American teen to hardened combat soldier to brutal criminal -- and he is completely real and true at every moment, never overacting and never falling short. He's a better actor than Matt Damon or Ben Affleck ever thought about being. If he were white he'd be costarring with Gwyneth Paltrow and Liv Tyler and being sought after by Spielberg and Scorsese. But because he's black he'll still be playing homeboys and gangstas when he's fifty.

what you smoking on, feels like America messed up and blamed us. This Movie personifies the feel and attitude of the youth in this country and resentment for the war. Tate was great in this film and the entire atmosphere is something that everyone should watch. That's how you gots to live according to this film because there isn't any peace on the streets and this movie shows it. Growing up in the inner city, there isn't much options except selling crack, playing sports, joining the military or ending up in Jail. very few get an opportunity to go to college. In the movie, those that survive were caught up in the ghetto lifestyle that perpetuates the HUSTLER.
Dead Presidents already had problems before the theatrical release with the MPAA and some scenes had to be cut. Unfortunately, there is no available release containing these scenes. The Criterion Laserdisc release offers something in between. The raid on the money transport at the end of the film is found a second time on the LD after the complete main film.
