In the fall of 1944, four African-American soldiers find themselves caught behind enemy lines and surrounded by German soldiers. They take refuge in a small Italian village that has been temporarily vacated by the Germans. In their company in a small boy, obviously shell-shocked and feverish, who seems only to speak to his invisible friend Arturo. Tensions rise among the four men not only because of their life-threatening situation but also because two of them become rivals for the attention of an attractive young woman. When they manage to make contact with their unit, they are told to capture a German soldier for questioning and with the aid of the Italian partisans, have a candidate. What they don't realize is that there is a traitor in the partisan group, one that will have major repercussion on one of the men 40 years later.

I agree with most comments that it was very well directed but the story was very cliché and boring and slow moving...and highly unrealistic with the main character holding a gun at his postal office for so many years and ...why on earth would the Italian guy come to the USA.. i could see it working if he was an Italian postal worker.. now that would have some logic to it.
Otherwise if you remove spike lee...and put another director ..it would be rating much lower since the story is not that compelling.. and yes, the ending was quite trite and over acted
nice for a Sunday afternoon but nothing to compare with Saving Private Ryan or other great flicks.
The film is what happened in 1944 when a group of black soldiers were trapped behind enemy lines in Italy. The simple story has been "spiced up" by making it a mystery some 40 years after the fact as one of the soldiers shoots dead a man who comes to his window at the post office, and how later the police find the priceless head to 400 year old statue in his apartment. The quest to find out what happened is what sets off the extended flashback that is the movie.
Spike Lee has made a film that is as messy as a film can get: Performances are all over the place, the script has logic gaps one could drive a truck through (to begin with what was the gun doing on the desk at the post office window?), a score is so wrong and so intrusive it destroys everything that is happening on screen, and a lead character that is hard to warm to. I haven't mentioned how clichés turn up at the most inopportune moments (portrayal of Axis Annie is silly and old by 1944), nor the rambling style that drags this film out two over two and a half hours. In the effort to make a real film about black soldiers in combat Lee's thrown in everything he could think of with the rest that nothing fits neatly and it all ends up over everything. Its so much material good and bad that you stop caring about any of it. Honestly if I didn't want to see where the head came from I would have wandered away an hour in. Yes there are powerful moments and great looking photography, but it all gets swamped in the mass of dissonant pieces. This is a film that was perfectly described by Roger Ebert ""Miracle at St. Anna" contains scenes of brilliance, interrupted by scenes that meander. There is too much, too many characters, too many subplots." Ebert goes on to say this is a film that needs to be seen despite the flaws, I wouldn't go that far but I would add if you are going to see it wait for cable.
Even in a film that clocks in at a quasi-epic 2 hours and 40 minutes, that's just too much narrative. And matters aren't helped by the fact that Lee, who has never staged battle sequences before, hasn't quite got the rhythms or camera angles right.
Miracle at St. Anna is also a 2003 novel written by American writer and musician James McBride. Those who have both read the book and the script say that several themes in the book have been enhanced for the movie. The supernatural aspect has been muted somewhat, but the religious Christian aspect has been made more pointed for characters on all sides—Bufflo Soldiers, Italians and Germans. Other details were also changed. For example, Hector didn't earn a purple heart but a silver star. Rudolfo recognizes the fact that he's going to get shot and doesn't seem to have come to terms with it. (In the book, he doesn't realize until the last second what's happening and is a little more OK with his fate.) Hector barely ever looks at who comes up to the window. In the book, he looks, notices a flashy ring, and then looks to see whose face it is. (This is important to the story because it is this small detail that makes the viewer/reader realize that the Black Butterfly has exacted his revenge from beyond the grave.)
