People have got rid of boxing and have created robot boxing. A person whose into robot boxing, Charlie Kenton, starts off with a fight with his robot Ambush and he's facing Blackthunder the bull. In an attempt to win, Charlie fails and owes lots of money to Ricky. Then, he has to take care of an 11-year old called Max after his aunt has left for the summer. Max's uncle gives Charlie some money to buy a Japanese robot called Noisy Boy. Charlie takes Noisy Boy to fight Midas and fails again. But, when Charlie and Max go to the junkyard to clear the parts off of Noisy Boy, Max finds a robot called Atom after slipping off a cliff. However, when Max wins so many fights with Atom, he just might be able to defeat the king of the robots, Zeus. In 2020, boxing is no longer participated by humans. Instead, robots will fight in the ring. A former boxer Charlie Kenton tries to find a good robot after he finds out his wife died and he had lost twice. When he decided to look for parts in the junkyard, his 11 year old son, Max Kenton finds a dumped robot Atom and says he could be a good candidate however Charlie did not agree with him. But Max decided that Atom could so he restored him and he had won many rounds to WRB (World Robot Boxing). And for the final proof that Atom is good, he had to fight the undefeatable WRB champion, Zeus. This is a clear case of trying to pander to too many demographics at the same time, or shooting for too many targets. A robot film for the guys, a weepy modern remake of The Champ for the girls. But no. It doesn't work like that because the tears, feelings and relationship subtexts will alienate the guys and the endless violence will bore the ladies.

Chick flicks and macho action films are not cojoined twins, no matter how much we wish they were, and while the modern world loves a politically correct idea like girls who love fighting and men who love ponies, in reality each sex invariably falls back on their comfortable clichés. Clichés for a reason. It might not make the post-modernists happy but men and women tick in different places and at different paces. Which makes Real Steel one whole heap of a confusing mess.

First there's Hugh Jackman as the lady's favourite (see Australia) and the man's hero (see Wolverine). Perfect for the androgynous role of pathetic macho ex-boxer wild card romantic roboteer. Then there's the muscular chick from Lost as the owner of a boxing gym. Frankly I'm surprised they didn't plaster her in jailhouse tats and shave her head, but then again the ladies like a bit of glamour with their love interest. We learned a lot from GI Jane didn't we Hollywood.

The robots are part Anime part Iron Giant and, bar the prevailing champion bot 'Zeus', seem ill-conceived and boring. We've seen better and with more imagination in recent years for these guys to make so much as a dent in the panel of memorable robotic CGI. D- definitely must try harder.

On top of the confusion, there's the usual repulsive Spielbergian formula. Orphan kid, doe-eyed love interest, themes of redemption, family love, decisions of the heart and so on and so forth. It's all rather wearisome at this point in the second decade of the 21st century and frankly I'll be glad when the old school moguls retire their typewriters and we can see something new. I love boxing movies. Especially when they are good. So I had to see this one in the cinema. The film is about a man, Charlie Kenton (Hugh Jackman) who is in this robot fighting. He is not good at it. He gets a eleven years old son suddenly, because the kid's mother had died. So Charlie is not eager to be with his son, but the brother in law of his ex-girlfriend who died gives him money to baby-sit this boy for only a few weeks. Charlie can use this money.

Great story, so far. The big problem I have with many movies in which children play, is that these children cannot act. Let me set an example: Edward Furlong in T2, good actor. Austin O'Brien bad actor. MacCauley Culkin, good actor. Jake Lloyd bad actor. So I thought, Oh no, this kid, Dakota Goyo, what's he going to do? And he really amazed me. This kid really can act. Nice done, nice acting in every way. It was a surprise.

The computer generated robots were awesome. Hugh Jackman was, like in all of his movies, great. The robot boxes in the shadow of Jackman. Everyone looks at the robot, how fast the robot was and so on. But give Jackman some credits too! It was him who was the fast one.

The story, and even the script was very predictable. The end of the last boxing game was like the end of Rocky Balboa. So it wasn't that original. But even that did not matter. The movie was great. Great action, it was fun, emotional. It was like a Disney movie, but then without Disney. Executive-produced by Steven Spielberg, the movie's special effects are seamless and far more cleanly cut than any of Michael Bay's hash. But the element that lingers longest is a subtle strand - also woven into last week's "Take Shelter" - of recessionary anxiety. Farra tells Charlie and Max that she wants to buy Atom as a sparring bot for Zeus. However, given her reaction to Max refusing to sell Atom and her reaction to Atom winning the fight against Twin Cities, it seems that this is not her real intention but rather that she is trying to use her money to control the sport (as Max says when he calls her out after the Twin Cities fight). Farra likely saw Atom as a threat to Zeus, as he really had no fighting pattern (Zeus's main feature was to adapt to other bots' patterns) and as a sparring bot he was also able to take a lot of hits and last longer in a fight. Knowing this, Farra tried to buy Atom to sort of move the threat out of the way and control the sport with her money. "All My Days" by Alexi Murdoch. a5c7b9f00b
