Jacq Vaucan is an insurance agent of ROC robotics corporation who investigates cases of robots violating their primary protocols against altering themselves. What he discovers will have profound consequences for the future of humanity. In 2044, solar storms have killed 99.7 % of the world's population and only 21 million people survive. The ROC Corporation has designed and built robots called Automata Pilgrim 7000 to help to rebuild the world. These robots have two security protocols; they can neither harm humans nor alter themselves or other robots. When police officer Sean Wallace shoots a robot and claims that it was altering itself, ROC insurance agent Jacq Vaucan is placed in charge of the investigation. Soon he believes that there is a "clocksmith" illegally modifying the robots. Jacq wants to live in the coast and asks his boss and friend Robert Bold to transfer him with his pregnant wife Rachel Vaucan to the coast. Robert offers the possibility if Jacq resolves the case. Jacq and Wallace go to a brothel where the modified robot Cleo attends and Wallace shoots its leg, expecting that the owner will lead them to the clocksmith. They meet Duprè but she is not the clocksmith that is modifying the robots. Soon Jacq discovers who is the responsible for modifying the robots but the Powers that Be in ROC believe that Jacq is the one to be blamed. I found this film started with a lot of promise of a great work.... it really does ask the profound question of what is next for us as a species The plot is simple but a little confused in places.. for the budget it had i think its OK and i would say watch it and enjoy... don't expect profound special effects and scenery and the makers rely on you filling in a lot of gaps in the story especially at the end i compare it very loosely with "I Robot" and "Blade Runner" but these real classics this maybe more a cult follower I think it has potential to be re-shot with a much bigger budget but it also could be come a cult classic for die hards I say check it out and give some good food for thought "Automata" touches on quite a few legitimate philosophical questions about artificial intelligence and what it means to be alive, while spurning the destruction of Death Stars and such. It's definitely a bit slow-going and could have been sharpened up some, although I'm certain that it plays the way the director intended. Melanie Griffith couldn't act her way out of a wet paper bag, and it's even worse now that all of that plastic surgery has rendered her face immobile--it's really quite a sad situation. Antonio Banderas is his usual overwrought, melodramatic, brooding self, which just gets to be annoying after a while. Still, it's a thinking person's movie, which in this day and age of special effects driven plots, is a very good thing. Thus, even with some reservations about the acting and the slow pace, I'm giving it a solid 6 stars, and considering that maybe I should have given it 7 instead. Once the film hits the desert, a little before the halfway point, Jacq has the energy sucked out of him and so does the film, limping along while he repeatedly throws histrionic fits. a5c7b9f00b
