CIA operative Nathan Muir (Redford) is on the brink of retirement when he finds out that his protege Tom Bishop (Pitt) has been arrested in China for espionage. No stranger to the machinations of the CIA's top echelon, Muir hones all his skills and irreverent manner in order to find a way to free Bishop. As he embarks on his mission to free Bishop, Muir recalls how he recruited and trained the young rookie, at that time a sergeant in Vietnam, their turbulent times together as operatives and the woman who threatened their friendship.
1991: the Cold War is ending. Just days before the US President is to visit China for trade talks, a CIA operative named Bishop is captured in a rogue operation at a Chinese prison. He'll be shot in 24 hours unless the President steps in. CIA honchos hunker down at Langley, controlling the damage to the diplomatic mission by hanging Bishop out to dry. Enter Nathan Muir, one day before retirement from the Agency, the man who recruited and trained Bishop. Can he find a way to get the President to free Bishop; if that fails, can he engineer a rescue? He hangs around Langley, telling stories about Bishop, as he gathers intelligence, looks for opportunities, and runs his own spy game.
Tony Scott's "Spy Game" starring Robert Redford and Brad Pitt is not exactly what I expected. It's not really an action movie. It's more of a thriller with some interesting insight into the operations of the CIA courtesy of writer Michael Frost Beckner. It's good fun with a lot of star power. On the day of his retirement, Nathan Muir (Redford) discovers that his protégé' and estranged friend, Tom Bishop (Pitt), has been captured in China for espionage and will be executed in 24 hours. Not exactly what 30 year CIA veteran Muir had intended as his swan song. Apparently, Bishop has also gone rogue as an operative. This does not fair well with impending trade status talks with China in 1991. Muir must get his man out, while the CIA "internal affairs" man, Charles Harker (an great snake-like Stephen Dillane) is out to trap Muir.
Interesting setting is in place. The movie centers on Muir's flashbacks to his relationship with Bishop since he recruited him in Vietnam in 1975. Ultimately, their strained relationship centers around his relationship with a mysterious woman, Elizabeth (Catherine McCormack). Guess what happens to rock bands, happens to CIA operatives. This is also a weaker point of the movie. The strength of the movie is in the mentor relationship between Redford and Pitt. Redford is particularly great as the seen-it-all before Muir who is coaching his charge in how the play The Game and the other game-- life. Pitt brings a energy and humanity to a spy who is ultimately disillusioned by The Game-- he makes believable the evolution. Tony Scott keeps up the pace along with a high tech and grand visual style. The opening sequence of the movie is stunning. Too bad with the structure of the story, Redford and Pitt don't spend more time on the screen together-- something the movie could have used more of. "Spy Game" is still well crafted entertainment.
I am currently considering giving it a 7.5 or even higher, because it's apparently above the average. As a political/espionage thriller, it stands firmly on the core of story--friendship beyond politics and era.
The highlight of the movie is not the action, although the actions are tight and well edited. Over the two hours of viewing, audiences will find Mr. Redford most fascinating. He is the real star here. In my opinion he deserved to be nominated by the main stream awards. He gave a performance very memorable, multi-dimensional and with good character development. Brad Pitt did his part OK, although from time to time he doesn't really look like a soldier more alike a cowboy. What really drags the film is the female lead, Catherine McCormack. She doesn't feel comfortable in the whole picture at all, and the romance between her and Pitt was totally a farce since she looks a decade older than Pitt, not to mention her "manly" tough look. Every time when she's on the screen a lame tenor song plays to coordinate her existence, that's really at odds with the entire film. Could they be deleted, I'd give Spy Game an 8.
As a Chinese I also like to mention the portrait of China in the movie is not accurate. First off, the prisons would never be touched by foreigners, be it International Aid Org or Red Cross or anything. Secondly, Su Chou was not a coast city at all, and Chinese army would never allow their soldiers to have pet birds on duty...... For the negative portrait of the bureaus I can take that. But all in all, they need to do their homework to polish such details.
Tony Scott is surely a master of thriller, at the same time he may need to improve on certain criteria like casting, more relevant film score, etc.
The movie asks tough, unflinching questions about America's responsibility to maintain world peace -- and the price we are willing to pay in order to accomplish that. Timely stuff, indeed.
Muir lies about his number of wives throughout the movie. He refers to agents and assets that served as cover wives, as his wives. He actually has only been married once to a Korean woman. His one wife stayed in Korea while Muir did two tours in South America. It's presumed that she has died much earlier. Harry Duncan is located in Hong Kong and played by David Hemmings. We seem him at the beginning of the movie calling Muir at home, and at the end of the movie negotiating the power outage in China. Operation Sideshow was run by the CIA to bug the Chinese side of the trade negotiations happening during the present day in the movie. Tran (the Chinese asset who escapes the prison at the beginning of the movie and is seen in a photograph later) is part of Sideshow, and Bishop piggybacks off this operation by convincing him to share prison schematics and rescue Hadley. Bishop was not a part of this operation, but rather was in China to free Hadley from the prison. She is the mother of the movie's director Tony Scott (and also mother of Ridley Scott). a5c7b9f00b
