In 2044, solar storms have killed 99.7 % of the world's population and only 21 million people survive. The ROC Corporation has designed and built robots called Automata Pilgrim 7000 to help to rebuild the world. These robots have two security protocols; they can neither harm humans nor alter themselves or other robots. When police officer Sean Wallace shoots a robot and claims that it was altering itself, ROC insurance agent Jacq Vaucan is placed in charge of the investigation. Soon he believes that there is a "clocksmith" illegally modifying the robots. Jacq wants to live in the coast and asks his boss and friend Robert Bold to transfer him with his pregnant wife Rachel Vaucan to the coast. Robert offers the possibility if Jacq resolves the case. Jacq and Wallace go to a brothel where the modified robot Cleo attends and Wallace shoots its leg, expecting that the owner will lead them to the clocksmith. They meet Duprè but she is not the clocksmith that is modifying the robots. Soon Jacq discovers who is the responsible for modifying the robots but the Powers that Be in ROC believe that Jacq is the one to be blamed.
Jacq Vaucan is an insurance agent of ROC robotics corporation who investigates cases of robots violating their primary protocols against altering themselves. What he discovers will have profound consequences for the future of humanity.
Autómata is basically a sober and reflexive version of I, Robot, discarding the hollow spectacle from that film in order to recover the potent ideas which impulsed Isaac Asimov's original book (even though it isn't a formal adaptation). Co- screenwriters Gabe Ibáñez (who was also the director), Igor Legarreta and Javier Sánchez Donate didn't attempt to copy that legendary novel, but they took its concepts as a starting point to present us a world in which men are losing the control over the technology... something which might be less sinister than it sounds, in sight of the bad decisions and selfishness which characterize humanity. The main character is portrayed as a melancholic and defeated man, who tends to refuge himself in his memories of childhood instead of recognizing the catastrophic potential of the case he's investigating. However, he takes more than he should in realizing what is going on, while the audience had already guessed it. This makes some revelations less surprising than they should have. Besides, I found the corporative villains kinda generic. Fortunately, they aren't fatal mistakes, and they didn't avoid me from liking this film, due to its intelligent screenplay, decent performances and extraordinary technical aspects, from the special effects to the perfect production design. If we analyze the components of Autómata, we can find similarities not only with the novel I, Robot, but also with cyberpunk literature and comics such as Magnus and Robot Fighter. However, the screenplay's main pro is having taken those familiar ingredients in order to prepare a science fiction recipe with a personal and different taste. I wouldn't consider Autómata an excellent film, but it left me satisfied due to its interesting ideas, the ambition of the screenplay and the attractive images, which always complement the needs of the story.
for once, i agree with the rating and most of the reviewers - this film is a 6/10, no question.
so, there's a future very similar (for what we're concerned) to Blade Runner, and there's big, bulky robots everywhere.
As you can imagine, these robots (who have two of Asimov's three laws of robotics) start to become self aware, and a small bunch of them head out of the city to start a new future, because they "want to live".
Aaand, there's an insurance man who discovers this. But, he spends most of the film in pain.
Now, i'm not the biggest Michael Bay fan out there (hehe) but, at about 1/3 through the film, i was honestly hoping for some action/adventure; you know, a-la Will Smith.
Because, the film isn't badly done. It doesn't shine particularly either, but the problem is that the plot is really paper thin. Now, some fisticuffs and 'splosions would have really livened up things, but no. Nothing really happens besides the plain and bleeding obvious.
So.. i don't know. Watch it. It won't hurt your brain. But it won't make you happy either.
My final vote (as above): 6/10, not that much of a film.
Once the film hits the desert, a little before the halfway point, Jacq has the energy sucked out of him and so does the film, limping along while he repeatedly throws histrionic fits.
