Renowned adventurer Allan Quatermain leads a team of extraordinary figures with legendary powers to battle the technological terror of a madman known as "The Fantom." This "League" comprises seafarer/inventor Captain Nemo, vampiress Mina Harker, an invisible man named Rodney Skinner, American secret service agent Tom Sawyer, the ageless and invincible Dorian Gray, and the dangerous split personality of Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde. In this adventure, the Fantom is trying to start a World War, and be at the head of it. The Fantom has highly superior weapons to the normal weapons of that day, and he also has extreme cunning, as we see by his tricking the countries into suspecting each other for war-mongering. A supposed loyalist to her Majesty's Empire is sent to fetch Allan Quatermain in an effort to track down the group who is trying to start the war. In a private and secret meeting, Quatermain meets who he is to be teaming up with on this mission. He is accompanied by Captain Nemo, Mina Harker, Rodney Skinner, Dorian Gray, Tom Sawyer, and Dr. Henry Jekyll (also Mr. Edward Hyde). Soon into their adventure they discover that the Fantom is behind these attacks, but there is more to this war than battle and cunning. League is one of the most frighteningly bad adaptations on a great book I've seen since Daredevil(Frank Miller I weep for your precious story in hopes that the planned Hard Boiled film shows promise). The graphic novel of The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen actually demands thought. The film demands an idle butt for warming a chair(leave brain at home, on the shelf in your largely sized library, second floor, first right). The film cut the novel down to a cheap action thrill ride (a badly produced one at that). The film dowses the viewer's eyes with poor special effects in an attempt to keep them from realizing the utter monotony of its hack and slash nature. Agh. I'm dying of grief. When will an Alan Moore project be taken seriously. Please read the comic before viewing this crap or at least after. The dialogue in the comic is so witty and there is so many great scenes that have been cut out of the story in the film. I beg of the audience to stand from their chairs walk from their isles and run (yes, run!) to your local comic store. You will not regret it! Signed Dearly Bad move Sean Connery you'll never get another good role so just give up! I really enjoyed "The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen." It different and original, but it also has that old school cliffhanger action of the 40s and 50s. I read many reviews that slam this film saying that it lacks of historical accuracy. Please, I didn't know that Dracula and Dr. Jekyll were historical figures. People fail to acknowledge that this is a fantasy/adventure film that combines fictional characters from the 1800 in a unique way. The story is adventurous and brings back characters like Allan Quatermain, (played by Sean Connery) from King Solomon's Mines novel, Mina Harker (Played by Peta Wilson) from Bram Stoker's horror novel Dracula, Tom Sawyer (Played by Shane West) from Mark Twain novel The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, and so on. They are all brought together to form a sort of X-Men like heroes, but set in 1899, to fight an evil villain by the name of M. The plot is quite intriguing, although uncomplicated; it gives the viewer an alternate story of long forgotten characters.

The movie has elaborate set design, beautiful photography, and great action sequence. The acting is not over the top and costumes are very Gothic. I have never read the graphic novel, but after watching TLOEG, I definitely will check it out. But what I liked the most was that I could actually watch this film with my kids and not have to worry of any inappropriate language, excessive violence or nudity. Unfortunately, not many people like the Gothic heroes and it looks like this movie has become one of many. Who know? Perhaps it will find new audience in the future. On my part, I really enjoyed this film and if you are looking for good old fantasy/action/adventure, I highly recommend The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. League begins as a smart variation on the summer blockbuster, then loses its nerve in a second half sure to satisfy neither cheap-thrill-seekers nor fans of neglected literary oddities. The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen is a comic book series written by British writer Alan Moore, illustrated by Kevin O'Neill, and launched in 1999 as part of the America's Best Comics imprint of Wildstorm Comics. British screenwriter James Dale Robinson adapted the comics for the screen. They are all characters from fictional novels and include:

Allan Quatermain [Sean Connery], an English big game hunter introduced in the King Solomon's Mines novels of British author H. Rider Haggard.

Captain Nemo [Naseeruddin Shah], a scientific genius who roams the depths of the sea in his submarine, the Nautilus, in two of French author Jules Verne's novels Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea (1870) and The Mysterious Island (1874).

Mina Harker [Peta Wilson], the wife of Jonathan Harker, a solicitor who traveled to Transylvania to sell London properties to Count Dracula and later lived to regret it in the novel Dracula (1897) by Irish author Bram Stoker.

Dorian Gray [Stuart Townsend], a character created by Irish author Oscar Wilde in The Picture of Dorian Gray (1891). Dorian's picture grows older but Dorian does not.

Rodney Skinner, The Invisible Man [Tony Curran], a thief who apparently stole the invisibility formula from the invisible man of English author H.G. Wells' 1897 novel of the same name (still under copyright).

Dr Jekyll/Mr Hyde [Jason Flemyng], from Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde (1886), a novella written by the Scottish author Robert Louis Stevenson.

Special agent Tom Sawyer [Shane West] of the American Secret Service. From the novel The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain although, in that novel, he is only a young boy No. Skinner mentions that he stole the formula from a scientist, most likely referring to the original Invisible Man. The reason for the change is because another company owned the rights to that character, whose original name is Hawley Griffin. No. Dorian Gray is killed by Mina Harker. Quatermain is stabbed in the back by Professor Moritarity. However, the movie ends with a witch doctor casting a spell over Quatermain's grave.No. In May 2015 it was announced the film is to get a reboot.Yes. Connery retired from show business after The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, however he continued to do some voice acting, playing the title character in the animated short Sir Billi (2012) (2012). He calls himself the Fantom, but he turns out to be Professor James Moriarty. a5c7b9f00b
