Set in the year 1999 during the last days of the old millennium, the movie tells the story of Lenny Nero, an ex-cop who now deals with data-discs containing recorded memories and emotions. One day he receives a disc which contains the memories of a murderer killing a prostitute. Lenny investigates and is pulled deeper and deeper in a whirl of blackmail, murder and rape. Will he survive and solve the case?
In 1999, Los Angeles is racial war zone with the army and LSPD and SWAT officers fighting Afro-American people. The former cop Lenny Nero is a dealer of illegal recording in CDs that gives the memories and sensations of the recorder to the user. He buys the recordings from the supplier Tick; he misses his former mistress Faith, who was a hooker and now is a singer; his best friend is the private eye Max Peltier and the limousine driver Lornette 'Mace' Mason, who has unrequited love for him. Two days before the turn of the century, the black rapper Jeriko One is murdered. The hooker Iris seeks Lenny out but there is an incident and they do not talk to each other. However she drops a recording into Lenny's car while he unsuccessfully tries to meet Faith at a night-club. However her boyfriend Philo Gant does not let them talk. When Lenny learns that Iris was sadistically raped and killed, he gets involved in a sick scheme and discovers dirty hidden secrets.
In our decade of lousy anticipation flicks and riskless scripts, I'm amazed so few people remember Strange Days, let alone acknowledging its importance and its reach.
Sure nowadays, it can take several minutes to get into the picture, because of its outdated production design terribly anchored in the early 90's, but, man did my head got blown into pieces when I began to realize the complexity of the thing. Not only does it have a Cronenbergian approach of the whole "Mind/Body" theme, but it is ballsy enough to put political conflict, Armaggedon and ethics regarding the future of pornography in the mix.
Strange Days walks several paths while staying consistent and coherent every second. And if that is not enough to convince you, the nearly two-minutes length "play-back" action shot should do the trick. They're dynamic as hell, really shocking when they want to and are the only thing you need to say "Damn, Bigelow can hold a camera".
Maybe the best of the Cameron/Bigelow flicks, you can call yourself an anticipation fan if you haven't seen it.
This is one of my favorite movies. I'm coming back to write this review after its director Kathryn Bigelow has received best director for the best picture Oscars for "The Hurt Locker." And she should have, I agree with the academy that it was clearly the best movie that year. But I enjoyed "Strange Days" even more. Finnes and Bassett are two fantastic actors who do not disappoint in this movie. Wincott is a great bad guy for any film. And although I would not cast Sizemore in any project, even he rose above and turned in a great performance, I was stunned. Lewis... well her part wasn't particularly important, and she did well enough. She probably was the best actress available who would have consented to the nudity, so there is no real problem there either. And she does have that skanky and overt sensuality that went perfectly with her character and voice in the music sequences. And she does at least rock, even if just a little. The story is fast paced and well written, with plenty of twists and turns. It has its comedy moments, which serve to punctuate the drama very well. I can't think of a thing wrong with this movie. Except for the creepy mime.
Due to the combination of violence and sex, approx. 11 seconds were removed from the British Version. No, there were only the two rogue cops, one of whom had killed Jeriko-One in a fit of anger after being goaded by him during a routine traffic stop. He and his partner then went about trying to cover their tracks by attempting to kill Iris who had witnessed it all and destroy the recording of the incident which she gave to Lenny. Max made up the story of the death squad to prevent Lenny from going to the police with the recording and everything he knewJeriko-One was killed by two rogue cops which was witnessed by Iris. Max then killed Iris on behalf of Gant. Gant had been using Iris to spy on Jeriko-One and knew that if his music artists discovered he was secretly recording their every move he would be ruined. Gant also requests that Max kill Faith, however Max is secretly having an affair with Faith so he takes the opportunity to kill Gant instead and attempts to frame Lenny for both his and Iris' murder a5c7b9f00b
