Vampire death dealer, Selene (Kate Beckinsale) fights to end the eternal war between the Lycan clan and the Vampire faction that betrayed her. The next installment in the blockbuster franchise, UNDERWORLD: BLOOD WARS follows Vampire death dealer, Selene (Kate Beckinsale) as she fends off brutal attacks from both the Lycan clan and the Vampire faction that betrayed her. With her only allies, David (Theo James) and his father Thomas (Charles Dance), she must stop the eternal war between Lycans and Vampires, even if it means she has to make the ultimate sacrifice. Underworld: Blood Wars is the fifth film in the Gothic vampire/werewolf film which shows that it may be running off its course. I am a fan of the series but loved the first two installments that opened up to werewolf vs. vampire world. The sequels are slowly fading away lacking plot, characterization, and just becoming a fun brainless action films. Blood Wars falls into the category of a forgettable action movie that still has the cool Gothic vampire/lycan concept ideas but less on plot and characterizations.

Its the same repeat of a plot from the first movie which lacks the creativity on the direction. Except the first movie was entertaining and had better action sequences. Selene (Kate Beckinsale) is caught in the middle of the war between the Lycans led by Marius (Tobias Menzies) and the vampires. With David (Theo James) needing Selene's help, and Marius also looking for her. Cause she is the only one that may know the whereabouts of her daughter Eve (which she has the key of some power).

The plot is simple, which these type of films never really focus on. Just setting up the conflict and even losing the focus on some key characters like Selene's daughter and her love interest Michael. Yes, there is plenty of flashbacks for newcomers of the series to make sense of it. The action sequences are poorly executed. First time director Anna Foerster does a poor job with the action, the stunt work, and even the editing was choppy. It also looked like there was no fight choreographer which made every fight scene dull. Even, the shoot out sequences with vampires firing their weapons at the lycans and they are firing back. There was barely any bullet ricocheting or impact to the characters or even the environment. Looks like they are firing with blanks from their guns. Or when Theo James and Tobias Menzies are having a screaming match as they walk towards each other firing their weapons (if they have yet to realize that bullets still has yet to harm them). The climax is not even noteworthy and forgettable from a villain that does not even stand out on his own. Most of the fight scenes are consist of close up camera shots with dim lighting and quick editing cuts to hide away from the terrible fight choreography. Even, the music composer Michael Wandmacher score felt generic and left in the shadows of the movie. Which could have added a tone to the film.

Kate Beckinsale is a stunning actress and fierce as Selene. It is nice to see her back as the character for as long as she can. Theo James returning as David, and decent as his character, even though his character has a bigger role this time. I love the concept that it took with Selene and David visiting the Nordic Coven of vampires that are more peacekeepers in their society. And some new characters that are briefly shown with some powerful speedy gift. The first battle at their location with Selene and Marius was somewhat decent as they fight on top of a frozen lake. While the battle from there on becomes anti-climactic.

If you are a fan of the series, I will recommend it. Blood Wars is a forgettable sequel, and could have been better handled with the direction. This fifth movie in the series sensibly starts with a brief recap of the previous four: 2003, 2006, 2009, 2012 (2009 is actually a prequel). Those who have not seen any of the above need not be dismayed. They can enjoy "blood war" in its simplicity. Roughly the movie can be divided in three segments.

The war is between the rising Lycans under the leadership of Marius (Tobias Menzies) and the waning vampires in their stronghold ruled by elder Cassius (James Faulkner), assisted by scheming Semira (Lara Pulver). Self-exile elder Thomas (Charles Dance) comes back to lend a hand. He is soon followed by his son David (James Theo) and the best vampire fighter Selene (Kate Beckinsale) who had once saved David's life. It turns out that the invitation is a conspiracy of Semira's to get Selene's blood to increase her own power. This first segment ends with Thomas's death and Selene and David's escape.

The middle segment, which in my view is the best, takes place in Nordic Coven which is exquisitely shot in its unsurpassed icy beauty. In this mysterious hideout that many do not even believe to exist, Selene and David seek refugee with a clan of vampire headed by an elder whose name we have not been given (Peter Anderson) and his daughter Lena (Clementine Nicholson) who, in addition to her usual vampire powers, also possesses the ability of short-range teleportation. This segment ends in a set piece of Lycans discovering this hideout and mounting a devastating attack which culminates in Selene begin killed and David going back to the vampire stronghold to claim leadership based on something revealed to him at Nordic Coven.

The final segment is all but predictable. It starts with betrayals. Semira betrays Cassius, taking over leadership, only to be betrayed in turn by her assistant-cum-consort Varga (Bradley James) who sides with David upon hearing his legitimate claim. The grand finale obviously will not do without Selene coming back to life, leading the final noisy, gory confrontation.

Followers of this series like myself know what to expect of Kate Beckinsale and will be rewarded with what they expect. James Theo, better known for his recent "Divergent" series, joined Underworld only in the fourth movie. There are no less than three familiar faces from "The Game of Thrones". Most prominent, needless to say, is Charles Dance, whose commanding presence is an asset to any screen. Tobias Menzies, who is a bit of a loser in his G of T character, barely rises to the occasion here playing the chief villain. James Faulkner is stereotype personified. Lara Pulver who appears essentially in TV series is no Lena Headey (whose portrayal of Cersei Lannister in G of T has become legendary) but adequate for this movie. The action is nearly relentless, only occasionally interrupted by humorless, tedious exposition, but despite the freneticism it’s almost all completely boring. a5c7b9f00b
