In 1963 Naked Snake, soon to be Big Boss and father a Solid Snake, infiltrates the Russian jungle to extract a Russian weapons specialist. The mission turns into a catastrophic failure when Snake's former mentor, The Boss, defects to Russia and sets a nuke. Now alone and defenseless Snake must stop The Boss and her squad of crack special ops from unleashing nuclear war! In 1964, a U.S. government operative codenamed "Snake" must infiltrate mountainous Soviet territory to rescue a scientist building a weapon of terrible power. Metal Gear is a series primarily known for its characters - the generation of the snakes. Metal Gear Solid had Liquid and Solid Snake. Metal Gear Solid 2 had Solidus Snake. But now, in Metal Gear Solid 3, we play as a new snake: Naked Snake a.k.a BIG BOSS This is a huge achievement of a video game. Not only has the Metal Gear franchise been given a complete rehaul, but it does it in such a sentimental and beautiful way.

You play as Naked Snake, a.k.a Big Boss, in 1960s Russia. First of all, you are given completely new characters and environments to tinker with, and you also are given the privilege to see how the Metal Gear saga unfolds.

Snake is sent in by Major Zero (Snake's commanding officer) into Russia to rescue Nikolai Stokolov, a Russian scientist responsible for building the deadly Shagohod (this game's "Metal Gear" I put Metal Gear in quotes because this isn't actually a Metal Gear. The Metal Gear idea was thought up by a guy named Granin, and it was rejected, so he sent it over to a friend of his in the United States). Snake encounters the beautiful EVA, Sokolov, and the deadly Ocelot unit, led by then commander Revolver Ocelot. Snake is about to succeed when he is betrayed by his mentor The Boss, who defects to the Soviet Union with Colonel Volgin (the main villain).

Whew. Anyway, the game takes yo uout of your comfort zone. No Soliton Radar. No starting right next to the main location. Snake has to travel over the dense jungle regions while also avoiding enemies, the wildlife, and fatigue. You're given a stamina bar, which decreases over time from fatigue and injury. If you don't treat those injuries (through the remarkable menu in your start menu titled "CURE"), you will begin to fault on even the most simplest of tasks.

The game takes a very different approach towards stealth. You're given a cameo meter which tracks your overall cameo effectiveness. It is an absolute treat to lie waiting on the ground, only a few feet from the enemy, and then go up and slit their throats with CQC.

CQC is the greatest new feature. When you get close to an enemy, you have a variety of functions to perform. Grab them and interrogate them, Use them as a human shield, kill them, whatever.

This is some of the finest voice acting I've ever heard in any game. David Hayter really deserves a huge round of applause, and Hideo Kojima deserves a standing ovation for his genius script. This is the most sentimental and touching of the Metal Gears, all thanks to the love interest, EVA. Let me just say, the final parts of the game are some of the best you'll play. Everyone seems tailor made to fit these roles. This was really wise choosing Konami's part.

The story does a great job of setting the scene for the "future" Metal Gears. You'll be so surprised to learn about all the things that led up to the current continuity as you know it. The Boss is really the backbone for the entire story. The game follows the themes of loyalty and betrayal, and by the end, you'll realize that The Boss isn't all she was portrayed. You'll fight in a breathtaking and beautiful white flower field, and you'll learn everything.

The theme song deserves its own paragraph. It's just like listening to and watching a James Bond opening. This is also the most humorous of the series, with so many fourth-wall breakers put in.

Complaints are those that have been made in every single Metal Gear. Awkward camera (which is fixed in Metal Gear Subsistence) awkward controls. But who cares. Dialogue is a little forced on Colonel Volgin's part, but this doesn't hurt the game. This game is truly a breathtaking work of art. Congratulations to Mr. Kojima. Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater is another addition that is essential to knowing the full story of the entire saga that is fraught with high action, suspense, and gripping gravitas that has made the series so noteworthy and legendary.

Despite being the third game in the current series, MGS3 is actually a prequel; chronologically speaking, to the events of MGS: Portable Ops as well as to the first game. Taking place in the 1960's, a lone agent known only as Naked Snake, aided by a group of experts in various fields of covert operations and technology, is tasked with infiltrating mountainous Soviet territory to rescue a scientist who is creating a weapon of terrible power. As Snake makes his way into the enemy's stronghold, he discovers that his longtime mentor is working with the enemy and the true nature of his mission that foreshadows future events to come.

I do not wish to spoil anything in this review, but I will say that this game sets up the games in a superb way that not even Hollywood movies can't do. It's just that awesome to see that so much care and determination went into crafting a game that at once surprises you and catches you off guard with it's stunning plot twists and revelations. You even get to see the origins of some well known faces such as Snake and Revolver Ocelot. Most unique of all is the camouflage system that allows you to blend in the environment that is necessary to evade patrolling guards and enemy surveillance. But you can actually evade the enemy by not having any camouflage at all. This gives the game depth that other stealth based games don't have (well, at least for the Splinter Cell and Assassin's Creed series which I've yet to play). This is nothing new but it adds an exciting dynamic to the game by giving you different options on how to proceed. Although this is a stealth game, there are times when you have to resort to using lethal force to take down your enemies. Hence, that's were the weapons come into play.

Aiding our hero is a vast assortment of weapons at his disposal from silencers, pistols, shotguns, machine guns, sniper rifles, knives, grenades, rocket launchers and even some few surprises. In some cases, you can also use the environment to your advantage. For instance, if an enemy soldier is patrolling near the edge of a cliff, you can knock him off the cliff to his doom; really impressive, though not necessary. But you gotta admit. Sending an enemy to his death with a well placed physical attack is immensely entertaining. Or you can use distractions such as making noise to throw off guards.

Adding to this already stellar package is the voice talent which gives the characters life in a cinematic way that just sucks you into the story, giving you the feeling you're playing an action, spy thriller of film caliber. That's not to say that all there is to it. Even thought it's movie-like production values are top-notch, it's still a video game at heart and nothing says that like it's incredibly well-designed boss battles that will leave a lasting memorable impression for days or even years to come.

The graphics are great though not as polished as MGS2: Sons of Liberty, but are still good. I was a bit disappointed in the visuals but as I played on, I realized why this was so. It was to add a sense of vintage and history that in the end fits the context and atmosphere of the game's setting. There's no doubt those that grew up in the '60s will feel a tinge of nostalgia while playing this game. I wasn't born in that era, but I really appreciated the setting of the game's story in order to achieve this. Be warned though, there are some really graphic and disturbing elements in this game so if you are against violence, then this is not the game for you. Play Mario if your that squeamish.

My only gripes with MGS3 is that most of the boss characters, save for Ocelot, Volgin, and the main villain, were not developed enough though this game has an abundance of character development and the weapon selection is a little clunky. Only a few minor qualms that don't berate the overall experience.

So....is Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater better than Sons of Liberty? I can't really; that depends on your own personal tastes. But if you're new to the franchise then I advise you to play this game first before tackling the later games as it would not make sense to you if you do it the other way around. Not as polished as Sons of Liberty, MGS, or Guns of The Patriots, but it sets up the later games really well, delving into the deep backgrounds of the characters and providing new insights into the mythos. It would really be a crime to not play this game. Capable of dislocating his joints at will, he is able to crawl, walk on water, flip, leap extremely quickly in the manner of a spider, and also climb and jump around in trees with ease. He mainly uses a crossbow in battle, coating his bolts in the venom of the Brazilian wandering spider, setting them on fire or even outfitting them with explosives.

The End - is a member of the Cobra unit with exceptional sniping skills, born in the early 1860s, and the only member of the Cobra unit without an emotion-based codename, though it is explained in the game that it signifies "true oblivion." The End can also become "one" with the environment, flora and fauna included. He apparently can summon the spirits of the "holy forest" he waits in to revive his stamina through directed sunlight.

The Fury - is a member of the Cobra unit and he is a pyromaniac and former Soviet cosmonaut. He utilizes a flame-resistant Soviet space suit in conjunction with a jet pack and a powerful flamethrower, both of which are powered by liquid rocket fuel UDMH. His codename reflects the unmitigated fury he feels towards the world while he is fighting.

The Sorrow - is a former member of the Cobra unit who was a powerful spirit medium and he uses his psychic powers to aid his fellow soldiers on the battlefield. He was romantically involved with The Boss and is revealed in the course of the game to be the father of her child Ocelot. After the ideological rift created by the Cold War loyalties changed with he and The Boss each taking their respective sides. Later, he sacrificed himself for The Boss when they met on a battlefield, via a bullet through his left eye, after the Cobra unit disbanded. He makes many hidden appearances (in ghost form) throughout the game's cut scenes. His skeleton can also be seen in first-person view near the end of the Virtuous Mission following the confrontation between Snake and The Boss.

The Boss (a.k.a. The Joy) is a legendary American soldier, founder and leader of the Cobra unit, and is known as the mother of the U.S. special forces. She was born in 1922 and is the daughter of one of the original members of the Philosophers behind the Philosophers' Legacy. She is known in Russia as Voyevoda, literally meaning The Warlord. In June 1944, during World War II, she led the Cobra unit to victory at the Battle of Normandy. She was pregnant at the time with a baby fathered by The Sorrow. The Boss gave birth to a baby boy on the battlefield via a messy caesarian section that left her with a long, snaking scar across her abdomen. The baby was taken by the Philosophers and would later grow up to be Revolver Ocelot. Kuwabara is a phrase used in the Japanese language to ward off lightning. This is why Colonel Volgin says it every time it rains. Oddly enough, he does not say it before getting struck by a bolt of lightning, causing his death. At first, he is talking to the head of the KGB. But after that call, he talks to the CIA Director, revealing that he was a spy for the Americans. a5c7b9f00b
