A spacecraft travels to a distant planet to rescue the crew of another spaceship that crashed, but their own craft, damaged in the landing, needs repair. Baelon commands the rescue team formed of his rival Cabren, Alluma, Dameia, Quuhod and the rookie Cos. While looking for but not finding survivors from the former expedition, Cos is murdered; however, they cannot leave the planet due to a projected electromagnetic field. Commander Ilvar joins the team to search for the cause of the interference, while Captain Trantor, technician Ranger and cook Kore stay in the craft. One by one, rescue team members are killed in weird situations materialized from their own fears by an ancient alien pyramid.
Science fiction suspense thriller, in which a rescue space ship crew meets up with horrors projected by their own imaginations.
I loved this film. It's got all the things you could ever want to see in a B-film -- fairly good actors chewing scenery, convoluted but interesting plot, some violence, a fast pace, and the strangest scene of all time! If you can find it, you should definitely check it out.
I come to this from the following perspective: Alien changed the game in sci-fi horror, but even something so startling and original as that was itself a reconfiguration, spare storytelling parts from 50's and 60's sci-fi plus the damaged vision of Dune, the scrapped Jodorowsky version. In fact, you will see Giger's Harkonnen designs from Dune resurface in Prometheus, next to other items dropped from the first Alien. And the collaboration with Moebius was so powerful, it spilled over into Bladerunner, which Scott escaped to after briefly tackling the Dune nightmare himself (eventually directed by Lynch).
It just seems awesomely interesting to me, this journey of vision.
The next step of that journey from Alien, is that Corman's factory - the aptly titled New World Pictures - briefly noticed a window: the world was hungry for more Star Wars and Alien, and he could retool his factory to supply new worlds for cheap. Hollywood would rush in to fill the demand with their own sequels, and that window is all but shut now, but for a brief time Corman could and did exploit the gap.
And here is one of two films that Corman remodeled after Alien. It is of value to me to get to note just which parts were deemed by Corman important enough to carry over, because he was a practical mind, and before making the switch to low-budget cinema, originally a student in the same field as I was. From the perspective of industrial engineering, what did he merit worth engineering to?
Galaxy is by far the more interesting of the two, although Forbidden World is fun too.
Environment! Nevermind the makeshift execution. That is what he chose to carry over, the place. Oh, there is a brief similarity in the early stages of plot, but no more. There is no actual monster, as you're going to find out. Corman was a smart guy, he could discern what functioned was not any creature, even one as well-designed as Giger's. It's the space, the air around the thing, this concept is key in industrial design and architecture, something the Japanese had separately developed for centuries in their tea ceremonies and Buddhist gardens. You can observe that in Cameron's Aliens; the same creature but there it feels different, the surrounding space has changed.
There it is. The place is granting the visions of horror!
The main visual motif carried over from Alien is the environment of the dustblown desert planet and strange 'alien' compound. The compound is an actual device that gives form to your worst fear, or so it goes. The metamorphosizing power is not in the fabric as with Alien, but in the actual effects devised in front of the camera, built by Corman's sfx-team. James Cameron is working there, and you can see that practical logic in his own films, chiefly Terminator and Aliens, effects and machines engineered to simple but trusted fears (being hunted down by strangers, being alone with critters crawling in the dark, losing a child, etc).
Alien was about the fabric of coherent logic being torn apart from the encounter with something new that far exceeds logic. This is less cinematic, cosmonauts actually go bonkers. There are some really mindblowing scenes, for instance, where a shattered crystal ninja star is reassembled from dust and cuts our guy (he uses them, don't ask) in the arm, a shard seeps inside his skin, he proceeds to promptly cut off his own arm, at which point the severed arm, still clutching the star, throws it and kills him. Another scene features slimy rape by giant worm.
It's all so deeply illogical, it registers.
And something else that is pretty cool and strange. There is a Master, a being of apparently pure energy who has 'mastered' fear and the environment. In the end, he is shown seated in the lotus position favored by Buddhists in meditation, with a glowing and shifting red mist in place of a head
(if Corman was going for the traditional association of different colors to chakras in the body, the one for the 'crown' chakra of enlightened mind should have been a pinkish hue - red is for the 'root' chakra).
Once defeated, he vanishes so that his seated outline reveals a glimpse of space void beyond - the Buddhist 'shunyata'.
There is no reason why this being exists in the future, or anything about him. And the nature of the device is explained in a very pedantic manner. That is because the actual narrative has not been designed by Corman in the same way as he feels the Alien worked, or as the Buddhist design gardens, to have emptiness and space.
