In turn-of-the-century Mexico, two very different women become a bank-robbing duo in an effort to combat a ruthless enforcer terrorizing their town.
In 1848, a New York bank wants to put a railroad across Mexico, so it buys up small banks around Santa Rita, Durango, and evicts farmers on the proposed rail line who owe money. The bank's henchman is the murderous Jackson. He runs afoul of two women, María, the tough but uneducated daughter of a farmer, and Sara, the European-educated daughter of the owner of one of these banks. To feed the now landless people and to seek revenge, María and Sara become bank robbers, veritable Robin Hoods. But Jackson and his hired guns are after them. What are the women's options?
This little pun to underline the Latin flavor of this movie: you will got the 2 Latin mega-stars of Hollywood: the Mexican Salma Hajek & the Spanish Penelope Cruz. OK, this reunion is more a commercial one than an artistic one, but the result is very enjoyable...
First, if western was the first genre of my parents' era, now it is a fossilized one. My last one was "Back to the future part III" ! Bandidas brings back a lot of fresh memories then.
Then, commercial doesn't mean "dumb": the story has good characterizations, a little "social" spirit, so it isn't a brainless entertainment. For sure, the acting is top, and there's a real chemistry between those 2 stars. The only little disappointment was Steve Zahn, who is here less funny than usual.
Finally, a good surprise....
NB: Because it was the motive for everyone in this movie & a real dissension with my brother: Who is your favorite: Hajek was his & Penelope was mine...
Some people rate movies as if all movies were made to win the best picture of the year. Apparently they don't think movies can be made just to be fun and entertaining. This is one of those movies. OK, there are goofs. OK the plot is pretty simple. But there are tons of great sight gags, fun special effects, great dialog, and a couple of "supper smart" horses that make this a really fun shows. I always like to read the reviews by people who "hated" the movie and rated it 1 or 2. Sad they can't just watch sit back and enjoy movies like other people. Bandidas is just a funny movie. If you haven't seen it, watch it.
