Detective James "Sonny" Crockett and detective Ricardo "Rico" Tubbs, of the Miami-Dade police department's organized crime bureau vice unit, work deep undercover as seedy criminals to infiltrate and bring down the various criminal enterprises of southern Florida.
Stubble-faced detective Crockett lived in a sailboat guarded by his alligator Elvis. His partner Tubbs was a black New York cop looking for his brother's killer. Together they took on the Florida drug world. The show influenced men's fashions toward Italo-casual and interior decor toward the Miami look. Very trendy music and unusual guest performers.
I feel Miami Vice in one hour had more excitement, action and cool dialogue than most of the current day full length feature movies! The music always added to the action & suspense with the song's lyrics adding a commentary to the plot. e.g.- "There's a River" in Down For the Count and "In the Air Tonight" - Brother's Keepers. There was also always enjoyable humor with Izzy & Noogie to lighten the suspense.
There is talk of an up-coming Miami Vice movie and who would play Crockett & Tubbs.
I would like to see a 2 hr.T.V.movie in which Crockett is now a Private Investigator in the Keys, gets abducted and Izzy finds out, calls Stan, who contacts Tubbs in N.Y. He comes down to rescue his buddy and the action takes place in The Keys & Miami with most of the original cast. No need for new actors.

This classic ground breaking series followed two very different Police Department detectives working undercover in Miami.
It holds up, the characters are still as endearing as they were back then. The first season has its faults mainly the abrupt cutting between scenes (due to planned adverts) but also at times the writers or directors don't seem to know how to finish a scene before the next as with many of the shows of the time. New comers may find this a little jarring and frustrating as this has been finely tuned in modern quality TV shows.
The first season has some rough episodes but of the 22 they are the few and far between. The characters are great and the acting is decent for the most part. The meeting of the both leads is great, Ricardo Tubbs (Philip Michael Thomas), a New York street cop collides with James "Sonny" Crockett (Don Johnson) Former football star and 'Nam vet' now undercover detective. It's good to watch their friendship grow through good and bad times. The supporting cast are on fine form, notably Det. Gina Calabrese (Saundra Santiago) and Lt. Castillo (Edward James Olmos) who becomes their new boss a few episodes in.
Its fitting that the exposition isn't forced and you need to take note to what the characters are saying. Many of the cast are while not major stars are veteran bit part actors who have familiar faces. In addition, as well as the many guest stars including Bruce Willis it's surprising how many of the supporting cast are stars now, for example Ving Rhames.
Even after being viewed through 80's rose tinted glasses and overlooking some cheese - it encapsulates a fanciful nostalgia, the clothes, the cars, the boats, soundtrack and even Miami itself. The style and panache of Crockett and Tubbs sums it up, but that's not to say the locations, story lines and character are not without a dark side, prostitution, kidnapping, murder and drugs (mainly heroin) to name a few. These maybe sanitized slightly due to censorship of the time but there's enough to give it an edge especially for the time.
Restrictions and the unkindness of time aside, like the Equalizer, from its motion picture shooting style and production/wardrobe design, to the landmark music Miami Vice is as entertaining today as it was back then.
Brandon Tartikoff had considered former Chips actor Larry Wilcox for the co lead. One reason was that there was a shortage of leading men in the mid-30's age group and that Wilcox had been a cop on the previous television series. However executive producer Michael Mann and creator/writer Anthony Yerkovich had remembered Don Johnson from four failed pilots and had him audition with Philip Michael Thomas for the lead roles. Therefore Wilcox was out and Johnson and Thomas displayed strong on camera chemistry so were then cast as the leads and the rest became prime time television history. Not at first, prior to shooting the pilot for Miami Vice, Don Johnson had envisioned the character of Crockett as somewhat of a south Florida cowboy. He wanted to wear blue denims and leather jackets and be a chain smoker. However Michael Mann and the writers wanted for Crockett to be a fashionable police detective who would blend in well as an undercover cop. Plus leather coats and blue jeans did not mix well with the heat and humidity of Miami therefore Johnson relented on his wanting to wear jeans and leather and agreed to dress in designer mens wear provided by Hugo Boss, Gianni Versace & Giorgio Armani and he was also a smoker too. During the show's preproduction there were other actors who'd screen tested with Don Johnson and the producers were not impressed, however after PMT's audition he'd made such an impression on Michael Mann and creator Anthony Yerkovich that they called him back and the rest is television history. Considering that mens fashions were provided by well known designers, Hugo Boss, Giorgio Armani and Gianni Versace well the wardrobe budget was huge. In the season one dvd set's extras, there is a feature which answers this question. Costumer supervisor Jody Lynn Tillen was responsible for dressing actors Don Johnson & Philip Michael Thomas in the latest high end fashions of the time, therefore the mens clothing budget was reportedly up to $100,000 dollars for the first season.
