In a world where both Mutants and Humans fear each other, Marie, better known as Rogue, runs away from home and hitches a ride with another mutant, known as Logan, a.k.a. Wolverine. Charles Xavier, who owns a school for young mutants, sends Storm and Cyclops to bring them back before it is too late. Magneto, who believes a war is approaching, has an evil plan in mind, and needs young Rogue to help him. A band of unique power-possessing mutants live in a world where their kind is hated and persecuted by humans. Under the guidance of their leader, Professor Charles Xavier, the X-Men strive for a world where humans and mutants can peacefully co-exist. The superheroes must also combat those radical mutants with intentions of exterminating human the race. Great for kids, but anyone with a mental age of over 16 will find this tedious drivel a major disappointment. Ian McKellen, what were you thinking? (How to spend the lovely fat paycheck, no doubt; and who can blame him. ..) X-Men is set in the near future where evolution has gone haywire, strange genetic mutations have begun to reveal themselves & 'normal' people including politicians are scared of them, their powers & what their existence means. Treated like freaks & outcasts mutants are shunned by normal society & Senator Kelly (Bruce Davison) is trying to get a law passed in which every mutant has to be registered & therefore controlled. Not everyone likes his idea & evil mutant Magneto (Ian McKellen) who can control metal objects with his powerful psychic abilities wants to wage a war against normal human beings as he believes mutants are the future. However Professor Charles Xavier (Patrick Stewart) runs a private school in New York for young mutants & also leads a team of mutants known as X-Men who use their unique abilities for good & are determined to stop Magneto & his evil plans to wipe out the human race...

Directed by Bryan Singer this along with Spider-Man (2002) really kicked off the whole Marvel comic book superhero trend that has continued with the likes of Iron Man (2008), The Incredible Hulk (2008), Punisher: War Zone (2008) from the Marvel stable & Hancock (2008), Hellboy II: The Golden Army (2008) & of course the mega hit The Dark Knight (2008) this year alone. To be honest I am not a huge fan of the comic book superhero genre & I personally just don't think character's designed to be drawn in 2-D make the transition to live action film that well. With the possible exception of the Blade trilogy of films & the Spider-Man franchise I just can't get that excited by them. Here in X-Men the film concentrates on only some of the character's, the actual comic books contained more X-Men & evil mutant bad guys for them to fight with the main focus of the story being Wolverine who goes from shunned outcast into a superhero. The script is alright but I really can't raise any more enthusiasm for it, the plot about Magneto bombarding politicians & world leaders with radiation to turn them into mutants is rather basic actually, X-Men is more of a character driven film but as I said I just don't think character's like the X-Men translate to film that well. There are obvious allegories & references to racism, intolerance & acceptance too just to try & add some dramatic weight & give the audience a moral message to think about. The X-Men, mutants & their powers can often look silly, some of the CGI computer effects don't do them any favours & it's hard to relate to them in any way as 'people'. At only just over 100 odd minutes at least it's a lot shorter than the average two hour plus superhero film, it moves along at a decent pace & it tells a reasonable story but I must say I couldn't get into it, I couldn't get into the world of the X-Men & what they were about & I did lose interest in the film & it's plot quite quickly although I did manage to watch it all without becoming bored.

The special effects are generally very good as one would expect, there's plenty of CGI ranging from the impressive to the substandard Playstation game graphics. I was also a bit disappointed in the villains, Sabretooth doesn't do much, Mystique is very blue while Toad just looks daft & if I was him I would be very upset if I saw the immense & useful power mutants like Magneto & Wolverine had & I had to be happy with pale green skin & a long tongue! The final climatic battle is set on the Statue of Liberty & is quite good as are all the set-pieces but I couldn't honestly say they were much better than quite good. I only saw it last night & the only scenes I remember are the ones at the train station & the final fight. Apparently 20th century Fox originally approached Tim Burton to direct by turned it down, imagine how that X-Men Tim Burton style might have turned out!

With a supposed budget of $75,000,000 X-Men was fairly low budget for a summer blockbuster which usually have $100,000,000 plus budgets. Although set entirely in the US the film was shot almost entirely in Canada. The acting is OK, Patrick Stewart & Sir Ian McKellen add the distinguished weight while Hollywood starts of the day Halle Berry & Hugh Jackman get plum roles as X-Men.

X-Men is a film that I can't say I loved & yet I can't say I hated, I just found it watchable & not much else, nothing more or nothing less. There are worse films out there to be sure but if your not a comic book superhero fan than you can live without seeing X-Men. Followed by X2 (2003) & X-Men: The Last Stand (2006) while two money grabbing spin-offs X-Men Origins: Magneto (2009) & X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009) are due out next year. Singer deftly crafts a sleek, unusually tight film that balances comic-book adventure, pulp opera and the fear of being different. If he did survive, it's possible he went rogue and chose not to re-join with the Brotherhood. In the novelization of X2, it is briefly mentioned that he is the subject of an international manhunt. Yes, Wolverine can die. His healing factor has grown over the years to the point where he was able to survive being caught in an atomic blast and having all the soft tissue incinerated from his body, yet within a short amount of time he was back to normal. His healing factor also prevents his growing old, since his cells don't age, therefore don't die. The comics also have him as being the victim of a gang of black market organ harvests, who removed all his internal organs, by reaching from under his rib cage rather than through it, and he was able to regrow his heart, lungs, liver, etc, before he was able to die. It is unknown if he can drown. While it is believed that decapitation can kill him, this is nearly impossible due to his skeleton being made of adamantium—a fictional metallic substance that is orders of magnitude stronger than titanium and steel, and does not rust but can be magnetized. Also if he was decapitated his head would have to be removed from the vicinity of his body. Deadpool/Weapon XI, a character who was surgically given Wolverine's healing power, can and has survived decapitation, but needs to have his original head put back on his body for the neck to heal to two sections of him back together. Since his healing ability is based on Wolverine's, one can assume that Wolverine might have this ability as well. His healing ability also makes Wolverine immune to death from any type of disease, poison, or toxin, though a strong enough dose can make him sick until his healing kicks in.

Since Wolverines healing factor prevents the adamantium in his body from poisoning him, one way that could kill him is if he came into contact with someone like the character Leech. Leech's mutant power is that he can make other mutant's powers not work. It is reasonable to believe that if you used Leech to take away Wolverine's healing power, then he would be prone to death from anything that doesn't involve getting through his skeleton. In fact, this is supported by an event in the comics. At the end of the House of M storyline, the Scarlet Witch (who has the mutant ability to alter reality) utter, "No more mutants", and in a flash, many of the X-Men were transported back to the X-Mansion, only to discover they no longer possessed their mutant gifts. After realizing what happened, Cyclops said, "Oh no—Logan. Without his healing factor, the adamantium in his body—Kurt!" To which Nightcrawler replies, "On my way!", and transports to where Wolverine is, only to find him both alive and shockingly, for the first time since before the experiments of Weapon X, with his full memory intact. Other factors that have occurred throughout the comics can also turn off Wolverine's healing factor. According to the X-Men film, Rogue's powers could also kill Wolverine, by extracting life energy and his powers out of his body. Magneto could probably kill him by meddling with the adamantium in his body.

In the comic universe, there is a supernatural blade known as the Muramasa Blade which was forged and designed to be able to halt healing factors. In the comics, Wolverine uses this blade to decapitate and finish off his long time arch-foe Sabretooth, who had devolved into a such a savage animalistic state that he could barely speak and was even more of an unreasonable killing machine. It stands to reason that if a talented swordsman wielded the Muramasa Blade and inflicted a fatal blow upon Wolverine, his healing factor wouldn't be able to save him from death. In the comic series called Guardians of the Galaxy, which is set about 1,000 years into a possible future, the skeleton of Wolverine appears, but Wolverine himself is dead. In this future, Dr. Doom turned Wolverine's skeleton into a robot into which he transferred his own brain. There was a continuation of the Origins story called "Wolverine: The End" which takes place approximately 200 years in the future. Wolverine has aged to the point of being considered an old man (looking about 65 to 70 years old), his healing factor no longer works as good as it used to, and the adamantium has even begun to break down, most notably the center claw on his left hand having actually broken.

In the Marvel alternate reality series "What if...", Wolverine dies twice, once at the hands of The Hulk, and once on the surface of Earth's Moon due to lack of oxygen. Dougray Scott, Aaron Eckhart, Viggo Mortensen were all considered. Bryan Singer talked to Mel Gibson, Russell Crowe and Edward Norton, while 20th Century Fox was interested in Keanu Reeves. He was brought in to work on the screenplay (as a script doctor), but all of his work was thrown out, except for two pieces of dialogue: Storm's line to Toad, and Wolverine calling Cyclops a dick. According to Whedon, the exchange was: "It's me." "Prove it." "You're a dick." He also wrote Storm's line, "Do you know what happens to a toad when it's struck by lightning? The same thing that happens to everything else." Interestingly, Storm's line has come to be the most criticized line in the whole movie. Wolverine has superhuman senses, including a highly acute sense of smell. He can identify people just by smelling their individual scents—each person's is unique. Even though Mystique has the power to change her appearance and voice into someone else, she cannot (or at least did not) change her scent. When she approached Wolverine while shapeshifted as Storm to deceive him, he smelled the air and knew that was not the real Storm. a5c7b9f00b
