A Russian calling himself Orlov and claiming to be FSB walks into undercover CIA offices in Washington DC wanting to defect. He says that he has information on a Russian sleeper cell, whose members were trained since they were children. Their mission is to infiltrate the American system by being one of them, ultimately with the goal of bringing down the United States starting on a specified day - code "Day X" - which will begin with the assassination of the current Russian President in New York City at the upcoming funeral of the American Vice-President. The CIA interrogator deems Orlov a crackpot until he names the agent tasked with killing the Russian president: Evelyn Salt. The importance of this last piece of information is that Evelyn Salt is the CIA operative currently in the room with him as his CIA interrogator, her name which he does and should not know in the current context. Darryl Peabody with CIA counter-intelligence, who is monitoring the interrogation, feels he needs to question Evelyn before she leaves the building as a matter of proper protocol. Evelyn, denying all accusations, decides instead to make a run for it, she states all in an effort to save her husband, German arachnologist Mike Krause, who she believes has been targeted as part of the Russian plot against her. Beyond love, her devotion to Mike is largely because he, before knowing of her work as a CIA agent, helped negotiate her release from North Korean captivity two years earlier when she was in special ops in the field, that captivity which included torture. The longer Evelyn is on the run, the more she looks guilty to the American authorities pursuing her. Although helping Peabody and his team try to capture Evelyn, Ted Winter, her CIA colleague, is the only person seemingly who believes she is innocent of the accusations. There may be others in the Russian cell in positions of American authority who may be part of the plot if Orlov's story in the general sense is to be believed, they who may be trying to help or stop Evelyn, depending if she is truly part of the cell.
Two years ago, the CIA field agent Evelyn Salt is captured in North Korea and tortured. Her beloved husband and entomologist Mike Krause presses the US Government to make a swap and bring Salt back home. On the present days, the highly efficient Salt performs administrative work with her boss Ted Winter. When a Russian defector turns himself in to CIA, Salt is assigned to interrogate him. Out of the blue, the man accuses Salt of being a Russian agent in charge of killing the President of Russia during his visit to New York to attend the funeral of the American Vice-President. Salt claims that she is innocent and asks Ted to call her husband, but she is not successful in her attempt. Salt asks Ted to give protection to her husband but she decides to flee to seek out Mike. Ted does not believe she is a Russian spy but the Secret Agent Peabody orders his agents to capture Salt dead or alive.
Salt's colleagues wonder if she is doing all of that running, jumping, shooting, exploding, and hair-dying because she actually is a Russian agent, programmed years ago to assassinate someone, or for some innocent reason such as concern for her husband or worry that she may have left the iron on or forgotten to feed the dog.
From the moment Salt flees, the movie is a clockwork of kinetic energy, gravity and timing. The stunts, which account for much if not most of the screen time, are superbly choreographed, and apparently many of them were executed by Jolie herself.
As evidenced by the poster above, Jolie can convey a knowing, beautifully cold efficiency with one glance. When not leaping from the top of one speeding truck onto another while dodging bullets, Jolie manages to juxtapose this aura with the occasional glimpse of anger, fear, grief or near-panic.
The premise and plot are unlikely but cleverly assembled. Early on you'll formulate a theory as to what's happening, but you will question it more than once before the truth is revealed.
Why you should see it You love the thought of James Bond-style action combined with a who-can-you-trust puzzle. Angelina Jolie.
Why you should avoid it You're the type who asks a companion to explain movies to you, loudly, in the theater. You resent not knowing something, because wondering feels too much like work. Loyalty to Jennifer Aniston.

according to me it's one of best action thriller.Though I wouldn't say thriller portion is the finest i've seen but when it comes to action Angelina Jolie has done finest job that i'm sure even some well known action stars wouldn't have able to deliver.Each and every action sequence in this movie done perfectly (not fictitious) start from the beginning till the end.
Even if you are not a fan of Angelina Jolie, then also watch this and i'm sure you'll praise her performance by the end of this film.
very much surprised to see it's been rated '6'...it's for sure a 8+ rated movie.
A Must Watch.
Salt is about as believable as a secret training program for military pilots consisting entirely of kangaroos in flight helmets. But it must be said that the star carries her load admirably.
The difference in running time between the theatrical version and the Directors Cut is approximately 4 minutes. Apart from the removal of the usual PG-13 censorship, the Director's Cut features several new scenes and extensions. Though not essential for the movie, the new footage does provide a bit of fleshing out for characters and story. The main changes include a different version of Michael's death and a slightly different conclusion: the US President dies, this change achieved by the addition and removal of some small scenes as well as a bit of CG blood. The film ends with a voice-over from a news report, telling the viewer that Salt has been killed and implying that the new US President is a Russian sleeper agent. Some believe Orlov's plan was therefore successful and a sequel is unlikely, but the news report can also be interpreted as a cover story, saying that Salt has been killed to cover up her escape and plan to go after the other sleeper agents.
