A police sergeant must rally the cops and prisoners together to protect themselves on New Year's Eve, just as corrupt policeman surround the station with the intent of killing all to keep their deception in the ranks. On New Year's Eve, inside a police station that's about to be closed for good, officer Jake Roenick must cobble together a force made up cops and criminals to save themselves from a mob looking to kill mobster Marion Bishop. Shifting political and social landscapes brought about a generally altered version of John Carpenter's creepy urban stand-off when it was remade for the big screen. Not the most remarkable of his numerous projects, 13 was good enough for one hurrah but perhaps insufficient for two. Then again that's exactly what made the 21st century rendition enjoyable: not only did the long interim practically remove all memory of the original from collective movie goer psyches, it also provided a fresh slate for the newer project to build itself, and be judged, upon.

So in fact we had on our hands a whole new product, with serious links to the past yet almost entirely on its own. Importantly, it was no longer a paranoid drama pitting the less bad against the evil, but rather your average jaded post-modern, information age potpourri of contemporary characters with their ensuing weaknesses and more well-rounded personalities. While Carpenter, who had next to nothing to do with the 2005 film, placed his story in desolate, crime-infested LA, this one moved shop to Detroit, where a police station in its last night of operation greets the new year amid a raging blizzard and threats from hostile forces bent on getting in. But these enemies were no longer a voiceless, ethereal federation of multi-ethnic gangbangers, as was the case when 13 first made the rounds in 1976. Instead, we received a more up to date brood of villains driven by genuine concerns, albeit wicked ones. They also talked a lot and pulled off a variety of stunts their predecessors never felt the need for, but essentially 13-05's producers remained loyal to the overall structure, if not feel, of Carpenter's original.

While a high-tech army of eager special forces types amassed outside, the reluctant heroes trapped within the station house found themselves cut off from the rest of the world by way of the storm and their assailants' penchant for severing power, phone and cellular utilities. A much more believable scenario than 1976's rather surreal predicament, but then we had the 90's somewhere in the middle to wake us up.

Regardless of all that, Ethan Hawke returned to the screen as a sort of vulnerable underdog champion, doing the lead, recalcitrant cop Jake Roenick. His wasn't too bad of an entry, and in fact it was easy to like the lad in this movie. Hawke teamed with a motley crew of unlikely protagonists, including murderer and underworld kingpin Marion Bishop (Laurence Fishburne), a name in itself paying homage to the first incarnation, where the leading character was known as Ethan Bishop.

Other personas comprised a similar hodgepodge of miscreants and law enforcement personnel, as seen before, although the new iteration spent less time showcasing their gradual bonding. John Leguizamo and Maria Bello both gave passable roles, as did Brian Dennehy, but all of them suffered from underdevelopment and inadequate screen time, problems inherent in this kind of fast-paced adventure. Ja Rule put in as small time crook Smiley, and was almost good at it, something that can't be said of Gabriel Byrne, who headed the baddie section. Mr. Byrne has appeared in quite a few mainstream capacities over the years, and seems less and less into them as time goes on. With 13-05 he must have hit an all time low, for we barely noticed his presence. Another equally shallow cameo was courtesy of Drea De Matteo, drawing on her sex appeal but foregoing the cool wit we loved so much during her tenure with the Sopranos.

Of course, the new Assault on Precinct 13 benefited mostly from almost two decades of stylization and refinement, so its locales and sets took on more of a lived-in vibe, its villains moved away from turf rabble to become cutting edge SWAT-lookalikes with the latest in ass kicking gear, and the language gained a few extra F words, something we liked very much, since in these pseudo-correct times every R rated flick counts.

However, some things stayed the same. The conflict still revolved around those outside trying to get people from inside the station house, people who supposedly deserve punishment but at the same time are endearing and likable. Also, both films share endings a bit on the abrupt and hastily resolved side, again a common trademark of stories built around action, suspense and a premise leaning towards the far-fetched.

Even so, Assault on Precinct 13 was quite watchable, had some impressive action elements and did try to revitalize the ailing urban thriller niche. While not a classic, these pros alone made it noteworthy and fun, even though it lacked Carpenter's original, haunting soundtrack.

Rating: * * * After watching Assault on Precinct 13, I was really surprised at how much I really did enjoy watching it. When my husband brought it home from the video store, I groaned. All I could think of was the last movie that I sat through with Ethan Hawke in it, Training Day, and that is was a remake. Those two factors made me wonder if I was going to waste another hour and half of my life. When the movie was over, I was pleasantly surprised! I had just found another movie to add to our DVD wish list and a good movie to recommend to friends.

The characters in the movie are wonderfully written and terrifically portrayed by delightful cast chosen to be in this film. Ethan Hawke seems to put his heart and soul into his character, a reclusive cop who, after losing 2 partners in a sting gone wrong, hides himself, away from responsibility, in a precinct running out of time. Laurence Fishburne plays a wonderful character based seemingly solely on self preservation. He'll do anything to make sure that he gets out of the situation as cleanly as possible and keeps all others at bay from getting too close.

The other characters really help support the movie and keep it going at a steady pace. Forced to do something that they would probably not do to try and get all of their friends and "family" (anyone who has ever known or been related to someone in the law enforcement field knows what I'm talking about with the family comment) out of this sad situation alive. The biggest turning point in this movie (and possibly my favorite plot line) is the fact that Hawke's character and Bello's (whom is quickly becoming a favorite actress of mine) character start off by having this mutual dissension for one another – he thinks he doesn't need therapy – she thinks he needs to get off his butt, quit blaming himself for things that happened in the past, and become the cop that she knows he can be again. Throughout the movie, he learns what she's talking about and she learns that there's more to life and making it your own. After Byrne's character catches her trying to escape and questions her about how many are inside, she holds her own and ends up being murdered, I was quite sad it was like she understood exactly what Hawke's character was going through.

I also really appreciate the fact that this movie isn't just a serious dark film. There are plenty comedic relief moments from the entire cast. I absolutely love Brian Dennehy as he's just a very versatile actor. I think John Leguizamo is a very under-rated actor and should be considered for more serious roles. Drea de Matteo and Maria Bello are two very up and coming actresses and I look forward to seeing them in more films. I expect that they, out of the entire cast, are the two that are going to benefit most from this film as they were excellent in the portrayal of their characters. Most of all, this film has given me reason to re-evaluate other Ethan Hawke films, which once I've decided that I don't care for an actor/actress, is something that I don't normally do.

All in all I feel this is a great movie and will hopefully become a favorite among many. A surprisingly credible action flick. a5c7b9f00b
