Set in the future and with the world plunged in economic crisis a new cold war with China, Britain's Ministry of Defence (MoD) is on the verge of developing the world's first artificially intelligent robotic soldier. The robot sounds and looks human but has amazing strength, speed, and agility. When the defense project gets close to completion, the AI controlled robot is pulled from the research and testing phase and thrust into military training mode. The child-like AI is traumatized by the transition, the way a pit bull puppy might be when brutalized for similar purposes. In a broad effort to preserve itself and those it has come to care about, the AI robot and a posse of cyborg veterans working within the MoD stage a lethal takeover of the research facility.
In a near future, with China at war against the West, the UK government develops war machines to fight against them. Scientist Vincent works in a military base developing artificial intelligence for the Ministry of Defense, using soldiers near death in his experiments; however, his true intention is to find a cure to his daughter Mary that has Rett Syndrome. When Vincent meets scientist Ava who has developed an advanced AI, he invites her to work with him for the Defense Department; however, Ava's snoop around the base prompts Chief of Research Thomson into simulating a Chinese attempt to kill her. Vincent decides to use Ava's face and shape to build an indestructible AI Machine. Soon he discovers the Machine developing feelings and growing up as a human being. When Mary gets worse and has to be submitted to surgery, Vincent learns that the Machine has life and is in love with him, but Thomson wants to transform her in a killing machine for the military.
I was surprised by how good this movie was - brilliant story, great acting and excellent special effects. Given it was apparently made on a budget of less than 1,000,000 pounds, I don't know how the special effects could be so good (unless almost everybody worked for percentages in which case congrats to all of them)!
The story is very much in the tradition of British Sci-Fi with its dark dystopian future setting. It also makes the viewer think while at the same time keeping your attention and moving along at a good pace.
Some people will over-analyse the movie and find some minor faults but in my opinion this movie is as good as or better than many of the "blockbusters" I've seen.
From the music to the lens flare to dialog, camera angles and shots, this movie did not disappoint one bit! The movie is a solid 8/10 for me. I don't know why people would give it any lower. I imagine it's because they just don't understand the complexities of the subject matter. No ... but when Johnny Depp comes out with his A.I film and it has more FX and bigger explosions - it'll get a higher rating. fml.
The Machine is good story telling and very thought provoking with just enough guns and intense action to make it a well rounded movie. Great acting from everyone involved.
The movie was awesome. I really liked the feel and tone of it all. I feel like they either ran out of time or got a bit lazy with the ending, but overall, it's a good watch. I definitely recommend this. Some people were right when they mentioned that sci-fi fans will appreciate it more(I did).
I gave it an 8/10 because I felt they lacked a bit of focus and should have emphasized a bit more on the impacts of their finds and the issue with China. It was a tad too focused with the scientist/creator and didn't brush any on the larger subject.
I'm really glad they didn't get weird or sexual about the whole thing - it got a mention, but that was all (thank you movie makers, for respecting the science and the scope of the situation. Even if the science-y rules might have had to be bent :P) I was surprised it was this good and managed to contain itself (Caity Lotz was pretty sexy in both versions). This is a wonderful glimpse into the very possible possibilities of the future - how will we deal with the singularity? I really enjoyed it - go watch it now. Thumbs up if you liked or if this helped :)
Closer to “Her” in its musing on human/machine connectivity, while also incorporating the dystopian and action-thriller aspects of “Blade Runner” and its ilk, albeit on a much smaller scale, the pic will divide fantasy fans, some of whom will give it props for breaking somewhat from genre formula, while others will be disappointed by the largely budgetary limits of its imagination.
